Aaron's UnReal Time Smackdown Review: A New Chellenger For HHH...A Very Old Match For Edge...
By Aaron Wood
You think last week's review was brief? Well, in comparison, I had all the time in the world seven days ago. And I wasn't totally and utterly exhausted either.
Something refreshingly honest... We started with a recap of last week's wedding festivities and HHH's "presents". In fact, it was a pretty f***ing lengthy recap... The comical music was funny though. You'll have seen what I mean... After that, we hit the credits to open the show. JR and Foley talked about what we didn't just see, as in what happened at the PPV. We then hit the VIP Lounge. MVP (who was looking "gangsta") mentioned that his guest might be the most controversial he's ever had. It was Jeff Hardy. MVP even said "some call him the "Charismatic Enigma"". NO! NOT THAT CRAP AGAIN?!?!?! Even worse, JR & Foley liked it!!! They mentioned Jeff guest-edited the WWE magazine this month and gave a frank interview. MVP welcomed Hardy to Smackdown before mentioning the forthcoming Battle Royal for the shot at HHH's title at Summerslam. They debated who was the favourite for the match, but Jeff hadn't seen MVP win since he lost the US Title to Jeff. However, MVP rounded on Jeff noting that he wasn't noted for beating HHH, but he was known for taking risks, which ended up in failure. Jeff said he made a mistake, served a 60-day suspension and missed Mania. They then mentioned he lost the IC Title and that his house-cum-trailer burned down. Jeff wondered what MVP was up to bringing it up. MVP said that Hardy was an "artist" and he was wrestling with issues of guilt, since his behaviour probably resulted in his dog's death. It was brought up that if Hardy screwed up one more time, he'd be fired. MVP told Hardy he was a grown man and start acting like a pro. Hardy alluded to MVP's history of troubles, which unsettled MVP a bit, but before long, Jeff had enough and shoved MVP, who took off. Shelton Benjamin def. Jimmy Wang Yang We saw still images of Benjamin's winning of the US Title on Sunday. He got a mic before his opponent came out. He noted he did what he said he was gonna do, because he "liberated" the US title from Hardy. If he cuts too many more promos like this, someone will definitely be liberating the title when they beat him for it. Benjamin started off how with a back suplex-like takedown and then a high knee lift for 2. Neck vice saw Benjamin take Yang into the corner. Yang fired back with an enziguri and began to build momentum, with a headscissors. They exchanged spin kick attempts, but Benjamin hit "Paydirt" for the three count. ---------- 5.5/10 - Meh. Short match to establish Benjamin as the new champion. I just wonder how long the push will last this time. ---------- We saw Edge backstage when Ryder & Hawkins came in. Edge praised his "kids" for winning the tag belts before apologising for last week. They said they didn't want or need and explanation, but Vicki deserved one. They then backed away and left. Festus def. Curt Hawkins The Champions came out first, and interestingly enough, they were wearing completely different attire, in deference to this usual Rated R gear. Jesse & Festus then made their way out. Festus pounded Hawkins in the corner, but then missed a charge, allowing Hawkins to work on the legs with kicks. A snapmare was blocked though and Festus made a come back. Flying shoulderblock by Festus sent Hawkins’s out. Jesse watched over him, but saw Ryder coming and decked him, with Foley guessing Ryder was going for the bell. Back in the ring, Festus hit the flapjack for the win. ---------- 5/10 - Very short and an indictment of putting the tag belts on the lamest team of the four involved on Sunday. They have "transitional champions" written all over them. I just think it's dumb that they waited until the Edge/Vicki/La Familia angle was at the beginning of the end before putting the tag belts on them. Hell, even The Bashams got the belts quicker when The Cabinet formed. ---------- Ryder came in and sent Jesse into the ringpost. The champions hit a double Implant DDT on Festus. They sent it to a feature on this new drive with Jenny McCarthy and Maria (and Jim Carrey) with regards to Autism. Apparently, SNME will be part of it, and a bunch of celebrities mentioned the charity and the WWE. And damn, McCarthy is still HOT~!~!~!~! Apparently, it's next week!!! We saw a camera awaiting Vicki Guerrero-Edge's arrival as we took a break. Bam Neely takes tips from Batista... We came back form break to see Edge talking to Alicia Fox, who he told to blend into the woodwork. However, in the background, we saw Bam Neely peering around the corner, listening in. Vladimir Kozlov def. Stevie Richards Stevie came out first to get the hometown pop. JR claimed that Richards had challenged Kozlov to a match. Stevie tried a schoolboy, but it didn't work. However, he did hit a flying clothesline. that said, it only got a one count. Stevie kicked away, but Kozlov caught on and gave Richards an overhead throw and then a kick to the chest. Kozlov hit a takedown from a front facelock and then put on a Fujiwara armbar. Stevie got up and then low-bridged Kozlov out. Kozlov got right back in and Stevie hit a dropkick for a one count. Richards ducked a kick, but ran into a battering ram headbutt to the chest for the win. ---------- 5/10 - Fine enough, and Stevie tested him enough without looking like winning. ---------- After the match, Kozlov cut a promo on the announcers. JR said that he kinda said that he wanted bigger and better competition. The "main event" is next... We came back to see the same recap as at the top of the show. The segment was great and all, but I don't need to see the near entirety of it a third time. The Great Khali def. A Bunch Of People in a Battle Royal to win the WWE Title shot at Summerslam Ken Kennedy came out first and said that while he was from Green Bay, he'd show everyone he was the biggest blockbuster of the summer in Philly before doing his Mr. Kennedy schtick. And then it finally happened! The Great Khali came out...WITH RUNJIN SINGH!!! And Runjin seems to have travelled back to the seventies as he came out with a huge pair of sideburns and oversized clothes. MVP was next out, and he finally had his entrance tunnel and pyro back! MVP avoided Jeff when the bell rang by rolling out the ring. Kennedy and Hardy worked over Khali in the corner, including a near Poetry IN Motion. Khali and Big Show found themselves to be the last ones standing. They exchanged headbutts until Umaga kicked the pair of them on their backs before we took a break. We came back to see Hardy hit Whisper In The Wind on Umaga as all six were still in it. Eventually, Hardy eliminated MVP. Umaga and Big Show squared off, but Big Show by clotheslining Umaga over. However, Hardy & Kennedy pounced. Big Show kicked Kennedy away and hit a Cobra Clutch toss on Hardy before sending Kennedy out. Khali knocked down Big Show as Hardy recovered. Big Show blocked a Khali Bomb and hit a chokeslam. However, Umaga came back in and hit a Samoan Spike on Big Show. Hardy came off the top and while Big Show caught him, Hardy headscissored Show over and out! It was down to Khali & Hardy, and there was only going to be one winner, and that was an Indian one. Even after a kick to Khali's nuts, Khali hit an overhand chop and then tossed Jeff out for the title shot. ---------- 7/10 - Nice Battle Royal with some good spots in it that you wouldn't expect to see. ---------- As Khali & Singh celebrated, HHH came out and made towards the ring. They squared up to each other, before Singh backed his charge away. Killings is doomed We saw Ron Killings, in his "gutter" hood where he grew up. He talked about he chose the wrong path and how he changed his life and what not. And that was the Truth. Great little video. So why is he doomed? He's being called "R-Truth" Michelle McCool def. Maryse Michelle came out first and we saw the finish of the Divas Title match . Dumb ass booking, as far as I'm concerned. Not only did they give away the money match, but they did it in under five minutes and then they threw away the angle of Michelle giving chase to the title. Maryse then came out. And the thing is, I can't decide which of these two is more dangerously thin... Michelle hit a dropkick, but Maryse pulled Michelle out the ring and then whipped her into the side of the ring, scoring a 2 count off of it. Maryse fell on her ass after delivering a short clothesline. Michelle then managed to put on the heel hook for the win. ---------- 4/10 - Maryse is hot but horrible. That is all. ---------- We again saw the camera shot awaiting Vicki's presence. That's what they said last time... Maria debuts on Smackdown next week...again... We then saw a RAW Rebound, as once again, CM Punk was helped out and the WWE had to show that Punk couldn't beat Batista all by himself thanks to Kane's chokeslam. Then Cena & Batista decided to give a preview of next year's Mania Main Event. Vicki had finally arrived! She was wheeled in by Chavo. Neely ran up and asked if she had heard what Edge said. After the break, Bam went up to Edge and told him Vicki was here. Edge said he needed to apologise in public. Bam went to tell her of this development. Brian Kendrick def Shannon Moore Wow...Spanky and Shannon Moore in the wrestling main event of a show. And JR realised who Spanky reminded him of, and he was the same person as I thought of. Brian Pillman. Kendrick got on the microphone and said we were all privileged in that we were witnessing the best guy in the WWE and we'd be able to tell our descendants we saw him. He then introduced Ezekiel, and if anyone tried to touch him, "Zeke" would be in the way. Shannon then came out with Jimmy Yang's hat on. I sorry, but I'm shocked Kendrick got promo time. Kendrick got started quickly and worked over the ribs of Moore. Kendrick missed a double knee drop off the middle rope. Moore went to the apron, but Zeke stared him into submission and Kendrick brought him back in and hit Sliced Bread #2 for the win. Well, what WAS the Sliced Bread #2. since JR said it had been renamed "The Kendrick". ---------- 5.5/10 - Kendrick got promo time. He got the Pillman comparison, which older fans can latch onto. He got a second feature match. There's hope for the guy yet. London's still screwed though. ---------- Bam came into Vicki's office and said that Edge wanted to apologise (or was that vice versa) in the ring. Ben Stiller spoke about Autism and SNME and how to donate to Jenny McCarthy’s thing and what not. Well that was obvious... The Rated-R Lothario made his way out. He said that he wanted to apologise (so Bam got it right the first time). As he said this, some of the crowd knew what was about to happen by way of chant. Anyway, Vicki came out with Bam & Chavo. She was wheeled to the ring before she climbed in. Edge tried to claim that we didn't see the full footage and he tried to resist Alicia Fox. But she kept coming onto him. She wouldn't listen! Why didn't Edge leave? He wanted to get the wedding perfect for Vicki! Edge said he couldn't live without her love. Vicki said she understood and they hugged. But then she said that hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. And she was PISSED! And thusly she did something. She reinstated The Undertaker! Edge wasn't too toasty about this. Hey, Taker and HHH could kill themselves while they lived it up on honeymoon! However, as Vicki would tell us that was not to be. Y'see, Taker had a match at Summerslam...against Edge...inside Hell In A Cell... Vicki CACKLED with laughter as Edge looked dumbstruck and the show went off air.
