Fedor’s Shocking Loss, Breakdown of UFC 116: Lesnar vs Carwin, News, Notes and More
Within seven days, the MMA world has the opportunity of witnessing the two best heavyweights in the world in action.
No, Fedor Emelianenko and Brock Lesnar are not facing off with one another but a case could be made that both are facing people who may be able to take over their claims of being the best in the world.
UFC Heavyweight Title Fight- Brock Lesnar vs Shane Carwin
-
It's safe to say that this may be the biggest fight of the year in the UFC, to this point in 2010.
Two of the biggest, most powerful men you could find stepping in to find out who is rightfully number one.
Both men are total opposites, as Carwin is a soft spoken, humble, gentle giant with cinderblocks for hands while Brock is a cocky loud mouth who has pretty much dominated anyone he's ever stepped into the cage with.
Both guys have a wrestling background from high school as well as college but both are also very comfortable on their feet.
Brock has yet to knockout anyone with a single shot however it can be argued that the shot he floored Heath Herring with could have knocked out most people.
Carwin has never been outside of the first round and has that legitimate knockout power having finished Gabriel Gonzaga and others with one single punch.
It's still very tough to gauge just how good either of these guys are as they really haven't been tested or fought long enough for people to get a true read on their talents.
What's interesting to note here is that Randy Couture was brought in to train with Brock Lesnar in preparation for this fight.
I'm guessing this decision was made as, I would say the only light heavyweight/heavyweight with comparable wrestling to Carwin and Brock would be Randy and training with someone like Couture should only help Brock.
Despite the fact that Randy is helping Brock, the men Lesnar trains with are nowhere near the levels of Couture or Carwin's camp.
Shane Carwin trains with Greg Jackson's camp, easily one of the best camps in MMA and what's even more interesting about this is that many say he trains harder then anyone at
Prediction: Shane Carwin by tko
"The Crippler" Chris Leben vs Yoshiro "Sexyama" Akiyama-
Well this fight may not be that big of a co-main event but to be honest, this could be a one fight card and I’m confident this main event would still draw ridiculous ratings.
Akiyama is one of the few Judo experts to enjoy a successful career thus far in MMA and to go along with that, a quickly developing standup game that was able to keep up with a good striker in Alan "The Talent" Belcher.
Akiyama's only fight in the UFC was over a year ago against Belcher in which he won a close decision.
In my opinion, Leben's punching power and technique are on par with Belcher's but Alan mixes some nasty kicks to make his movement much harder for the opponent to predict.
I state this because Akiyama should be able to keep a distance and pick apart Leben from a distance, and when Leben does get in close, take him down.
I give Leben a lot of credit for taking this fight on such short notice (13 days) between his previous fight and this one but I don't think he has the ability to beat someone on the level that Akiyama is on.
With that being said, Leben is never one to count out and with over a year of not competing,
Leben may be able to expose any ring rust Akiyama brings with him.
Prediction: Akiyama by unanimous decision
"The American Psycho" Stephan Bonnar vs Krzysztof "The Polish Experiment" Soszynski-
The first time this fight happened, Soszynski picked up the win, as Bonnar was cut due to an accidental head but and the referee forced the fight to stop.
Bonnar protested the decision as the head but is an illegal move in the UFC and was hoping for the fight to be ruled a no contest which it should have been.
In their previous fight, Soszynski was able to land the more powerful punches and kicks and win the early rounds but soon Bonnar began his comeback and seemed to find his groove, counter punching Krzysztof and finding his range until the head but.
Bonnar's best days are behind him, as he has lost his last three in a row or five of his last seven.
I don't think Bonnar will ever regain his form and there's a noticeable difference in his aggressiveness compared to his TUF days while Krzystof seems to be the gatekeeper of the Light heavyweight division.
Soszynski has a record of 4-1 in the UFC and his only loss was to Brandon Vera, considered to be another gatekeeper in the UFC's light heavyweights.
Soszynski is comfortable on the ground or standing but Bonnar has a strong chin and is very difficult to submit.
I see this fight going down similar to their first fight and it should be pretty entertaining as neither is known for putting on boring fights.
Prediction: Soszynski by unanimous decision
Kurt "Batman" Pellegrino vs George Sotiropoulous-
If you're a fan of two guys rolling around on the ground who know what they are doing then this one's for you!
I know, that actually came out sounding terrible but these guys have both been on a roll in their last few fights and the winner of this should find themselves a step closer to top five competition and possibly eventually a lightweight title shot.
Sotiropoulous has been undefeated in his UFC thus far, going 5-0 and coming off his biggest win to date, in Joe Stevenson.
George has shown that he's comfortable wherever his fights go but there's no denying that he has some of the best takedown in the UFC and transition's to mount as if he were turning a page in a book.
The guy has worlds of potential and with a couple more, high caliber opponents he could very well be the future of lightweights.
"Batman" is 7-3 in the UFC and currently enjoying a four fight winning streak.
Both of these men have a common opponent in Joe Stevenson, who was defeated by George but victorious over Kurt.
Pellegrino is a fantastic Jiu Jitsu practitioner and is very comfortable and successful on his back.
Kurt is always composed and very seldom takes unnecessary risks but he likes to fight to the pace of his opponent where as George is known for pushing the pace.
Kurt has been submitted a few times in the past, mostly due to chokes and as much as I am a rather big Pellegrino fan, I see George taking down Kurt at will and look for the submission, most likely a rear naked choke to which he may or may not get.
Tough choice for the outcome and I think Pellegrino is a tough guy to finish but George should be able to find a way the longer the fight goes.
Prediction:
Sotiropoulous by submission
Chris "Lights Out" Lytle vs "The Immortal" Matt Brown-
This is a rematch to a fight from 2007 in which Lytle was victorious due to a guillotine choke.
Both of these men are known for their striking and knocking out others but neither has been knocked out before.
Chris Lytle has been fighting in the UFC off and on since 2000 and has compiled a record of 7-9 in the promotion.
It's not common for the UFC to keep fighters with a record as abysmal such as that but Lytle is a legit contender for fight of the night, knockout of the night and even recently, submission of the night any time he steps into the cage.
What's incredible about Lytle is that he has an overall record of 28-17 but of his losses, 15 are by decision, and two by doctor stoppage to a cut.
What's my point?
Well Chris has never really been finished, never submitted or knocked out and he's been in there with everyone.
Marcus Davis, Josh Koscheck, Matt Hughes, Matt Serra, Karo Parisyan, Robbie Lawler, Nick Diaz, Shonie Carter and Dave Menne have all gone the distance with "Light's Out" and been unable to get the finish.
As much as standing and trading is Lytle's strong suit, he has a good submission game where most of his wins come from.
The Immortal is a good choice of opponent for Lytle and I’m sure is also looking to avenge his loss from three years ago.
Brown is an aggressive striker, almost to a fault as he often times gets himself in bad situations going for the kill and is then submitted.
Brown is a good fighter who's 4-2 in the UFC but the only times he's faced tougher competition, such as Dong Hyun Kim and Riccardo Almeida, he was defeated and as much as both guys are probably a level above Lytle, Chris has many more ways of winning this, whether they stand and bang for 15 minutes or take it to the ground.
I can't see either getting the knockout as both guys seem to be able to take a ton of punishment but I do see this one ending before the time limit expires.
Prediction: Chris "Light's Out" Lytle
Goran Reljic vs
Prediction: Reljic by tko
Brendan "The Hybrid" Schaub vs Chris Tuchscherer-
Tuchscherer trains with Brock Lesnar and since Brock's been training with Randy Couture for his fight this weekend, as is Chris.
"Balls of Steel" showed a lot of heart in his first appearance in the UFC when he took on Gabriel "Napao" Gonzaga.
Gonzaga landed an inadvertent low blow to Chris in the early stages of the fight and Tuchscherer was in terrible condition, even looking to be convulsing.
For whatever reason, Chris decided to continue and was easy pickings for Gabe after that.
Since then, Chris won a controversial split decision to Tim Hague therefore giving him a record of 1-1 in the UFC.
Schaub has looked pretty good on TUF and in his fight with Chase Gormley who he made short work of
with a tko.
The Hybrid has never been to the second round and his only loss comes to "Big Country" Roy Nelson, a level or two above Tuchscherer in my opinion.
Brendan should be able to come out, aggressive as always and put a hurt on Chris and hopefully put him away with punches.
Questions do remain as to Schaub's cardio and how he will react if the fight goes to a later round but training with Greg Jackson's camp, something tells me he's prepared for whatever Tuchscherer offers.
Prediction: Schaub by tko

Recap of Strikeforce/M1:
Fedor vs Werdum
Fabricio Werdum submitted Fedor Emelianenko at 1:09 of the first round to a triangle choke
in a truly historical fight.
Fedor came out, throwing a flurry of punches which dropped Werdum and followed him to the mat where he continued to throw, however, Werdum was able to attempt an armbar.
Fedor muscled his way out of the attempt and instead of standing up and hoping for another knockdown, went right back to landing punches and sure enough, got himself in a triangle choke.
Fedor tried to shake the choke and fought as much as he could to get out but in a second that will never be forgotten, Fedor tapped a single time giving the "Last Emperor" his first legitimate loss and leaving Werdum as the happiest man on the planet.
Werdum was on cloud nine, escaping the cage to celebrate with his team.
When interviewed, Werdum talked about how Fedor was his favorite fighter and he would love to offer him a rematch.
Fabricio was very classy in victory and gave Fedor the respect he deserved.
When Fedor was finally interviewed, he had no expression on his face and didn't look at all like someone who had just fought.
Fedor, through an interpreter, said that this loss was God's will and he would like to analyze where he went wrong and hope for a rematch.
The winner of this was to face Alistair Overeem for the Strikeforce Heavyweight championship and 99% of people felt this would be Fedor, however now it looks like a Werdum vs Overeem fight is up next, a rematch of a fight which Werdum won.
For me, this is one of those fights I don’t think I'll ever be able to forget and in several years I'm sure this will be one of those milestones in the MMA timeline.
There have been rumors that Werdum vs Fedor 2 may happen before Werdum vs Overeem title fight as a rematch would most likely be a huge seller on pay per view and an even bigger fight than the title fight.
Dana White has to be extremely pleased with the results of the fight and now he can claim that Fedor isn't worth the money he wants and that the top talent in the world is already in the UFC.
Cung Le defeated Scott "Hands of Steel" Smith by tko at 1:46 of the second round
in a rematch of their previous fight in which Le picked apart Smith for most of the fight, only to get careless and drop his hands, giving Smith the opportunity to pummel Le against the cage and drop him, leaving the referee to step in and stop the fight.
Le dominated Smith in this one, mostly with body shots which were apparently enough in the first round to break a couple of Smith's ribs.
Smith spent most of the first round against the cage and the second round was no different however when Le did land a good kick early in the second round, and drop Smith, the referee stepped in to stop this one, giving the victory to Le and letting him avenge his only loss.
Cristiane "Cyborg"
Josh "The Punk" Thomson submitted Pat "Bamm Bamm" Healy
at 4:27 of the third round to a rear naked choke.
Very strong opener with both men staying on the ground for most of the first round and Thomson winning the round with his constant transitions from submission to submission.
The second round began and for the most part, Healy was able to outwrestle Josh and keep his back to the mat for almost the entire round.
The third started and Thomson was able to get Healy's back and apply a rear naked choke.
Healy fought this for a long period of time, looking for absolutely any way to get out but eventually he had to submit before he passed out.
This was a good opener and a strong way to start what ended up being a very enjoyable card.
A rematch with Gilbert Melendez is most likely next up for Thomson and hopefully Healy finds himself against someone the likes of Lyle Beerbolm or Gesias "JZ" Cavalcant in his next match.

News and Notes
Both David "The Crow" Loiseau and "The Dean of Mean" Keith Jardine were released by the UFC on Thursday.
Neither comes as much of a shock as, Jardine's most recent loss to Matt Hamill, was his fourth in a row and even if you're fights are fun to watch, the UFC is still the cream of the crop of talent and if you can't hang with guys in your division then it's time to leave.
I do feel bad for Jardine as I thought his fight with Hamill could have went either way but I guess if you can't beat someone when they have a rather noticeable staph infection then who are you going to beat?
The Crow is years past his prime and hasn't even looked competitive in his last three or four chances in the UFC.
Loiseau has been given many opportunities by Dana and the Ferrtitta's but there are many other fighters out there that have not been given the chance to compete yet and continuously using Loiseau only on Canadian shows is not fair to anyone.
Loiseau is still a draw here in
UFC 115 Payouts:
Rich "Ace" Franklin: $225,000 (includes $70,000 win bonus and $85,000 knockout of the night)
The prelims on Spike prior to UFC 118 have been announced as Joe Lauzon vs Terry Etim and Jorge Rivera vs Alessio Sakara.
This is probably the most stacked card so far this year and both prelim choices should be terrific openers.
Wanderlei "The Axe Murderer" Silva was forced to pull out of his scheduled fight with Yoshiro "Sexyama" Akiyama due to knee problems.
Wanderlei is very disappointed about this and the fact that he saw three doctors’ about his problem and hoping one would say he would be okay, shows the desire this man has to compete.
Akiyama was also disappointed about the injury as these two have been looking to take on one another for years.
I'm sure this fight will happen eventually but in the mean time, Chris Leben will step in to replace Wanderlei this Saturday.
Leben is coming off a big win over Aaron Simpson and should be given a ton of credit for taking this fight on such short notice.
The Kendal Grove vs Goran Reljic fight that was to be aired on the prelims prior to UFC 116 has now been pulled and replaced with Seth Petruzelli vs Ricardo Romero.
Apparently this all comes from an interview in which Grove made mention that Spike TV doesn't care about the fighters and only care about the stupid things they do.
As much as this was a dumb thing for Grove to say, I agree with him.
All the seasons of TUF have been edited to the producer's liking so as to make mediocre fighters look like bonafide stars and create drama out of nothing.
I think it's a disappointment this has to happen as it really only ends up hurting the fans.
I mean, I don’t think anyone's all that excited about the replacement fight as they were with the original announced one.
Hopefully Romero and Seth prove me wrong and somehow we get to see the original fight if time permits.
With Jake Shields most likely leaving Strikeforce for the UFC and being that he was the Middleweight champion, it looks like Scott Coker will be organizing an eight man tournament for the vacant championship.
The thing about this that is very intriguing is that Strikeforce has a terrific group of middleweights and it's probably the division they have with the most depth.
I would love to see a mini tournament with the likes of Dan Henderson, Jacare, Robbie Lawler, Tim Kennedy, Cung Le, Scott Smith, Melvin Manhoef or even Nick Diaz.
If this does indeed happen, it would be spaced between several events and most likely take several months but many of these fights could legitimately headline both Pay Per View cards as well as small shows on Showcase.
Following Fedor's loss to Fabricio Werdum, Dana White changed his Twitter status to " :) "
During the Strikeforce event, Frank Shamrock took it as his opportunity to take him and his braces and retire from MMA.
Frank's best days are behind him but I still believed that he had a couple of big fights left in him.
A rematch with Cung Le or fights with Matt Lindland would both be entertaining scraps and of course a Ken vs Frank fight that has been rumored for years.
I will give Frank a lot of credit considering he has lost his last two fights and any more may Jeopardize the legacy that he has left.
Frank was a very entertaining fighter and one of the first "names" to come out of the UFC in the early years of MMA.
Joe "Daddy" Stevenson has been forced to pull out of his fight against Takanori Gomi, scheduled for UFC on VERSUS 2, due to a knee injury suffered in training.
Tyson Griffin will be replacing Stevenson and look to get back into the win column.
I wanted to say that if anyone has any feedback to give me, I would happily accept any constructive criticism or ideas that are given.
