UFC - The Ultimate Fighter 6: Mallory's Recap of Episode 12
By Mallory Mahling
Well, this is it. The final four fighters will face off tonight and two of them will live to fight another day. Saturday, specifically, when the Ultimate Finale airs live on Spike TV. The semi-final match-ups will be: - Mac Danzig vs. Matt Arroyo - Tommy Speer vs. George Sotiropolous At the Team Hughes training session, Mac Danzig talked about his upcoming match with Matt Arroyo and called him the toughest guy in the house next to Danzig himself. Arroyo said he thought the match would be a big challenge for him, but he said the pressure to win was on the more experienced Danzig. During training Richie Hightower fell on Arroyo and injured his ribs. He'd had an X-ray and learned there was a small crack and a deep bruise. He didn't want to let anyone down and certainly didn't want to be thought of as a wussy. He'd fought injured, but it had never affected his breathing before. Arroyo sat down and talked with Coach Serra about the injury. Dana met with him, too, and was astounded that Arroyo would give up his big opportunity so easily. Dana's next step was to meet with Serra to pick a replacement. They also met with all of the Team Serra fighters and there wasn't a lot of enthusiasm among them to fight in the semi finals. Nobody seemed to want to face Mac Danzig, Dana observed. Dana kept asking how much each guy wanted the fight. Finally, John Kolosci had the right answer and the right attitude, and Dana gave him the fight on the spot. Kolosci gave Danzig the news. Mac didn't like the fact he'd have to fight the guy he had beaten decisively earlier in the season, but that's the way it was. John was glad he was getting another chance at Mac. "Payback is a bitch," he said.
- First Semi-Final Match: Mac Danzig vs. John Kolosci John got in some "wicked" leg kicks at the beginning, noted Serra. Danzig said he was getting frustrated with the "big, silly kicks" and didn't want to get clipped by one. The fight ended up in a rear naked choke, and with 32 seconds left in the first round, John tapped. John was happy he was leaving with a loss like this, though. The win was an emotional one for Danzig. He now moves on to the finals this Saturday night.
- Second Semi-Final Match: Tommy Speer vs. George Sotiropolous. Tommy had size and strength on his side, but George had finished both his fights. George got poked in the eye and there was a time out. They resumed and Tommy got George down on the mat and proceeded to knock him out. Dana said George had looked nervous and tentative, not like the George he was used to seeing. Serra said the punch that hurts you the most is the one you don't see coming. He thought George should have taken more time after the poke in the eye. Tommy was announced as the winner and he, too, moves on to the finals. Matt Hughes was ecstatic that both fighters in the finals were from Team Hughes. Therefore, he concluded, he'd won the season. Serra called George a champion in the making and was sure he would have a bright future. So, this Saturday night, live from The Palms in Las Vegas, Mac and Tommy will square off for the coveted UFC contract. Dana said Matt Serra had been a phenomenal coach this season. Funny, I didn't hear him say a word about Hughes' coaching skills. The season six coaches were to have fought December 29. Unfortunately, Serra had suffered a herniated disc and had to pull out of the fight. Matt Hughes will fight Georges St. Pierre for an interim title and the winner will face Serra in the spring when the title will be unified. Serra said he hated to root for Hughes in that fight, but if Hughes beats GSP, then Serra will get to face Hughes in the spring. He was looking forward to it. As are we all!
