Aaron Wood Presents The WWE Vintage Collection: Ep. 7 (Bulldogs, Harts, Rougeaus & Shieky!)
By Aaron Wood
Hi there, again, I have found myself with time to do this, but not much, so I don't know how detailed I'll get... I found myself with little to do relatively, these past few days, but it's sure as hell gonna pick up as of tomorrow...
Gene Okerlund welcomes us to the show as usual. This week, we'd be going back to October 1986, and back, once again to MSG. The Mets had just won the baseball and on this night, the fans packed the building to see the likes of British Bulldog, Bret Hart and The Iron Sheik, as well as a tag team Battle Royal. But first, singles action that would advance a tag team feud... Dynamite Kid vs. Jim Neidhart (Originally aired on the MSG Network on October 20th 1986) We join things just after the bell, and as it goes, on this night, it seems as though Monsoon and Hayes will be joined by Gene Okerlund himself. A couple of lockups go nowhere before Kid gets a crossbody for a 1 count. Anvil took a powder on the outside. Dynamite tricked Anvil into going for a shoulder block, only to get a leg trip, before putting on an armbar. However, Neidhart whipped Dynamite off and hit a knee to the gut to get control. Neidhart dumped Kid out to the hard floor and then slammed him on the concrete, much to Mean Gene's chagrin. Anvil slammed Kid on the mat, but he missed a second rope diving headbutt. You know, of the type Kid did. Missile dropkick by Dynamite Kid was followed by a clothesline. Kid went for a crossbody, but Anvil moved. However, Kid caught himself in the ropes, flipped over and rolled Anvil up for the three. WINNER - DYNAMITE KID Up next, a Mountie and a Sheik... Gene welcomed us back as he was looking to talk Sheik. He debuted in 1979 and claimed victory in his debut in the first Battle Royal and then would go on to win the title and then, in 2005, an induction into the Hall Of Fame. Jacques Rougeau vs. The Iron Sheik (Originally aired on the MSG Network on October 20th 1986) We join things in progress with Jacques in control, although Sheik took a quick powder. Sheik gets back in, but Jacques stayed in control, hitting a dropkick. They then did a leapfrog spot. With Sheik doing the leap!!! However, Rougeau scored a hiptoss and put on a side headlock again. Jacques caught a kick attempt and gave Sheik an atomic drop. Knee drop scored a 2 count. However, Sheik kicked Jacques in the throat with his pointed boot, sending Rougeau to the outside. Back drop by Sheik back in the ring. Sheik then pat on Jacques before posing. Sheik locked on an abdominal stretch, although Monsoon totally killed it, claiming it wasn't on right at all and so had no chance of winning with it. Rougeau got out of it, but Sheik hit a gutwrench suplex for a 2 count. A regular suplex was blocked and Rougeau scored one of his own. Jacques was dumped out again before Sheik ran to the second rope to celebrate. Sheik spat at Rougeau again and Monsoon screamed for a DQ! The crowd chanted "USA!" for the French-Canadian. However, it spurred him on, since he slingshotted into the ring and gave Sheik a sunset flip for the three count! WINNER - JACQUES ROUGEAU British Bulldog vs. Greg Valentine (Originally aired on the MSG Network on October 20th 1986) We join things in progress as Bulldog has a sharpshooter locked in on Valentine. However Valentine crawled over and eventually managed to make the bottom rope. Bulldog went for a suplex, but Hammer blocked it. Valentine's attempt was blocked by Bulldog and Davey Boy hit one for a 2 count. Smith picked Valentine up and hit the running powerslam. However, it only scored a 2 count when Valentine put his foot on the rope. Things spilled outside and they had a foot race. However, Hammer got back in first and got the jump on Bulldog as the Brit came back in. Valentine scored with a couple of leg drops and then called for the Figure Four. He locked it on. Bulldog crawled across and made the ropes. Valentine stomped on Bulldog's knee before giving him a few slaps. However, Bulldog fought back with punches to the head and then a dropkick. However, Valentine folded up Bulldog and held onto the top rope for a three count! WINNER - GREG VALENTINE When we come back, some second generation Canadians... Gene welcomed us back again, saying we saw Jacques Rougeau earlier, but later on, his brother Raymond would see action against Bret Hart. These two would face each other over the year, but this time, they were all alone. Bret Hart vs. Raymond Rougeau (Originally aired on the MSG Network on October 20th 1986) Again, things are happening as Raymond hit a couple of armdrags and Hart took a powder. Rougeau scored with a reverse monkey flip, sending Bret out again to mull things over. Back in, Bret stalled for a bit by hiding in the ropes. Hart went for a reverse monkey flip of his own, but Rougeau saw it coming and Raymond stomped Hart in the head. However, Hitman was able to gain control, hitting an atomic drop. After working him over, Bret sent Rougeau out to the hard floor. Rougeau tried to get back in as we took a break and gene expressed disappointment in Bret's attitude. We come back pretty much to the same point as Rougeau was getting in the ring, but Hart stayed on top of things. Bret with a backbreaker for a 2 count. Chinlock by Bret. Rougeau was up quick, but Hart took him back down. Raymond got up and out of it, and he scored a sunset flip for a 2 count. However, Bret stomped Raymond in the gut before working him over in the corner. However, Raymond began to fight back with punches and chops, to the point where Bret wanted a time out! Rougeau continued though. Dropkick by Rougeau scored him a 2 count. A piledriver connected, but again Hart kicked out before the three. Bret was sent into the corner, and while Raymond's charge was blocked, Raymond grabbed a foot and hit an atomic drop, sending Bret into the corner. However, the bent Hart scored a double leg trip and pinned Rougeau with his feet on the ropes for the three count. WINNER - BRET HART What was coming up next would see many, many men in the ring... Gene told us that on this night, the fans got something that was pretty rare. A Battle Royal, and indeed, this time, a Tag Team Battle Royal, with the winners getting $50000. The rules here are that if one man gets eliminated, the whole team is gone. $50000 Tag Team Battle Royal (Originally aired on the MSG Network on October 20th 1986) The teams in this were: The Moondogs, The British Bulldogs, SD Jones & Mike Rotundo, The Hart Foundation, Jay Strongbow & Steve Gatorwolf, The Iron Sheik & Nikolai Volkoff, The Big & Super Machines, The Islanders, The Rougeau Brothers, King Kong Bundy & Big John Studd, Greg Valentine & Brutus Beefcake and The Killer Bees. Moondog Spot gets bumped right away. There's far to much happening to pick out stuff that's happening. A bunch of guys go for Bundy, but John Studd made the save for his partner. We saw that SD Jones was gone. Dunno who got him out though. Gatorwolf was eliminated by Sheik and Volkoff. Sheik was dumped out by one of The Machines, who backdropped him out. We took a break there. We come back to see things have thinned out dramatically. The Bulldog and the Harts were eliminated just before we came back and they were still battling. Bronze was eliminated by Brutus Beefcake, leaving us with 5 teams. Jacques Rougeau was backdropped out by John Studd. Studd took great enjoyment in telling Raymond to get out. The Dream Team were bumped when Beefcake fell victim to a Machine. Studd & Bundy team up on a Machine to eliminate them. That left us with Bundy & Studd and the Islanders. They paired off, but it didn't work well for The Islanders. Bundy avalanched Tama, but Haiku put up a fight. However, as Studd held Haiku, when Bundy charged, Haiku moved and Bundy sent Studd out the ring! WINNERS - THE ISLANDERS Gene exclaimed it was a shocker before thanking us for watching. OVERALL - Fine show this week, with the build to that final Battle Royal, as all the matches on the card (not just the ones shown here) featured a couple of guys who'd be in that main event.
