Follow The Tweeter: Muppets, Halloween Hijinx, Hashtag Revolutions & More!
Welcome back to the Insanity's on-going coverage of Wrestlers in Social Media! How about we just jump in to what seems to be the really big story of the moment - The Muppets on RAW. Some of you really liked it. Me? Not so much. Either way, it sure got people taking on Twitter this past Monday -
Please, let's try and keep the Kelly Kelly kissing a frog jokes to a minimum, all right? We have to keep the line moving, after all... WWE Diva, Kharma, recently commented on her inclusion in the upcoming WWE '12 Video Game -
Indy Star and former nWo Girl, April Hunter, posted some comments about an Indy Show she was at recently -
Apparently, November is a month dedicated to growing out one's facial hair. WWE Superstar, Daniel Bryan, is apparently leading this "No Shave November" charge -
Besides the Muppets being on RAW this past Monday, it was also Halloween. Who'd your favorite wrestlers dress up as? Well, it turns out Evan Bourne dressed up as a pot head, because he's now serving a 30 day suspension. Chris Jericho, on the other hand...
How about Jay Briscoe's son?
Or how about this guy?
Hell, even the Ultimate Warrior got dressed up this past week...
You may have noticed a new wrestling-related hashtag recently,
#10percenter. This was the brainchild of DGUSA booker Gabe Sapolsky -
As it turns out, this new hashtag may also sort of be my fault, as well...
Fortunately, a voice of sanity rang out on Twitter last week, responding to the boom of #10percenter tweets in response to news concerning TNA's most recent TV tapings -
Let's be frank - I have a problem with this #10percenter thing. Actually, I have a few. One, Austin Aries is right. If the #10percenters really mattered as much as we all think we do, he'd have been able to make a living in Ring of Honor or Dragon Gate USA, doing what he does better than most in the world. Part of this is because of companies like DGUSA, and the mentality you saw displayed in Gabe's tweets above - the idea that a company ONLY caters to a minority audience, and damn the rest. The thing is, a lot of people who aren't as happy with TNA or WWE as they want to be aren't part of the 10% who scour puroresu, and follow every promotion Johnny Gargano works for, or even know who the hell Cat Power is. These are people a company like DGUSA should be trying to attract with their alternative product, but either don't try or don't even care about this broader audience enough to bother. So, instead, you have these companies create an elitist atmosphere around them. Its fans begin to feel as if they're better than other fans because they support this product, and act accordingly, making it that much harder for newbies to even want to sample a product like DGUSA because their fans act like douchebags in support of this product. I remember for the longest time feeling this way about Ring of Honor and Ring of Honor fans, as this served as the biggest deterrent to me wanting to check out ROH at all. Strange how I only started getting into ROH after Sapolsky was replaced as booker by Adam Pearce, no? Look, I get people wanting a hashtag like #IWantWrestling or #10percenter to rally around. I used the #IWantWrestling tag myself for a while when talking about wrestling, so believe me, I understand wanting to send a message to WWE and TNA about what we as fans really want. But, at the end of the day, none of that is going to mean jack unless you're supporting the companies who make products you actually like, and promoting them in a way that doesn't make you come off like an asshole! That means doing more than just tweeting #IWantWrestling or #10percenter when you rip into WWE or TNA. It means jumping into companies like ROH, or DGUSA, or SHIMMER, or WSU, or CHIKARA, or EVOLVE, or whatever, supporting the shows financially by buying the DVDs and the iPPVs and whatever merch you want. It also means talking about the stuff you actually LIKE in wrestling, which, contrary to some people's opinions, I actually do more often than not. This Week in TNA is not all I do around here, you know? Bottom Line - these hashtag revolutions aren't going to mean sh*t until the Austin Aries, Claudio Castagnolis and Dave Laganas of the world don't have to "sell out" to the Big 2 in order to make some real money in the wrestling business! The only way that is going to happen is when you get off of Twitter long enough to hop on a Search Engine, look up some of the vast array of alternatives there are in today's Independent Wrestling Scene, and start supporting them with your wrestling dollars, instead of WWE and TNA! Finally, before we go, those of you who listen to Maverick Radio on ClubWWI.com may remember how excited I was going into EVOLVE 9, and the build up to Sami Callihan vs. Fit Finlay, all based on a series of awesome promo videos Sami produced himself. Here's an example of what I'm talking about -
Well, it turns out, there is now going to be a documentary coming out, chronicling Sami Callihan's life and career leading into this very match.
If anything, this looks like it's going to be a very interesting look at someone who has quickly become one of my favorite new performers. If you take nothing else from this week's Tweeter, I hope you all take the time to check out some of Sami Callihan's work, both in the ring, and in his self-produced promo videos. The guy really is one of the most intriguing new talents out there, and a name you all ought to know sooner rather than later. Seriously, folks, get on the boat now, because this is a guy who really should take this industry by storm in the years to come.
