The ROHbot Report: Nigel's History Making ROH World Title Reign, Updated Cards For The Next Four Events, A Big Announcement Regarding The Next ROHbot Report, and More

By James Bullock

...

You are here for the best ROH news analysis in all the interweb. That’s right, welcome to The ROHbot Report. Today, we’ll be looking at the upcoming action revolving around Ring of Honor’s return to Danbury and Edison, as well as Nigel McGuinness already legendary ROH World title reign. Also, I have a big surprise for everyone at the end of the Report. Sound good? I hope so.

-The Necro Butcher has signed for a new match on 10/24 in Danbury, CT since Jimmy Jacobs will now be in the Iron Team Match. It will be a No DQ Three Way Match pitting The Necro Butcher vs. Delirious vs. Mark Briscoe.
-Jerry Lynn has joined the ROH roster and he wants to be tested. He will get that test on 10/24 in Danbury, CT. It will be Jerry Lynn vs. Claudio Castagnoli when ROH returns to Connecticut.
-
Two more matches have been signed for the 10/24 Danbury, CT event. A battle of power will see Brent Albright vs. Jay Briscoe. SHIMMER action comes to Danbury when Sara Del Rey faces Ariel.

The card as announced so far for 10/24 in Danbury, CT:

Iron Team Match
The team that scores the most falls in 30 minutes wins - Non-Title
ROH World Tag Team Champions Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. LAX of Homicide & Hernandez vs. Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black of The Age Of The Fall vs. Chris Hero & Davey Richards with Larry Sweeney of Sweet & Sour Inc.

FIP World Heavyweight Title Match
Go Shiozaki (if still champion) defends vs. Austin Aries

No DQ Match
The Necro Butcher vs. Delirious vs. Mark Briscoe

Special Challenge Match
Claudio Castagnoli vs. Jerry Lynn

Brent Albright vs. Jay Briscoe

Sara Del Rey vs. Ariel

I must say that Connecticut is getting one heck of a show to begin this history-making weekend. Even though the talk about these shows revolves around Homicide’s return (as it should be. Especially with the main event that he’s involved in), they aren’t letting that be the focus. They have booked two, should be, amazing matches with the Lynn/Claudio and Aries/Go contests. With Lynn becoming an official full-time competitor, and Castagnoli trying to get some momentum since his heel turn, you know these two will do everything to make sure the fans are talking about them after the show. On the other side is the FIP title match, which is a rematch of one of my favorite matches of the year. Both men have similar, explosive, repertoires, and they work very well together. Aries vs. Shiozaki could easily become the match of the weekend. Even though I’ve stated that ROH needs to cut back on the No DQ matches/wild brawls on every show, I can’t help but get excited about the one on this show. You have three wild men who have proven that they love to go crazy when able to. If I had to predict a winner, I would go with Delirious. He hasn’t had a big win since joining the Age of the Fall. A win here could easily justify his actions. Albright and Jay should be a nice little exhibition, and Del Rey will kill Ariel.

-The Aries vs. Jacobs feud will continue on 10/25 in Edison, NJ. It will be Austin Aries vs. Jimmy Jacobs in an Anything Goes Match when ROH finally returns to Edison.

-ROH is looking to increase the competition in its tag division and will give two new teams a shot to do or die in Edison, NJ. ROH World Tag Team Champions Kevin Steen & El Generico will be a non-title match against The Osirian Portal. A team from The Age Of The Fall will be faced with Cheech & Cloudy. The duos of both The Osirian Portal and Cheech & Cloudy have a high-flying, innovative style. 10/25 in Edison will see if they do or die against ROH's most established teams.
-Tyler Black will not be on the Age Of The Fall team against Cheech & Cloudy in Edison. It is because Jerry Lynn has now found himself without an opponent on 10/25 (we'll get to that in a minute). 10/25 in Edison, NJ will now have Black vs. Lynn.
-Davey Richards, Lynn's original opponent for 10/25, has been pulled out of his scheduled match on 10/25 by his agent Larry Sweeney. Due to Sweeney's negotiations, Richards will now face off with Brent Albright in Edison. The Albright vs. Sweet & Sour Inc. feud will continue on 10/25 in this first time ever match.

Here is the card so far for 10/25 in Edison, NJ:
The Main Event - Dream Tag Team Match
Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez)

FIP World Heavyweight Title Match
Go Shiozaki (if still champion) defends vs. The Necro Butcher

Anything Goes Match

Austin Aries vs. Jimmy Jacobs

Special Challenge Match
Jerry Lynn vs. Tyler Black

Grudge Match
Brent Albright vs. Davey Richards with Larry Sweeney

Do Or Die Tag #1 (Non-Title)
ROH World Tag Team Champions Kevin Steen & El Generico vs. The Osirian Portal

Do Or Die Tag #2
A team representing The Age Of The Fall vs. Cheech & Cloudy

I still can’t help but be giddy over the main event. I really wish I could be there just for that match alone. As a lot of you know, I originally predicted that the finals of the Survival of the Fittest tournament would come down to Jerry Lynn and Tyler Black. Just looking at what both can do, you can’t deny that they won’t have anything short of a memorable contest. I hate to bet against the veteran, but I think Lynn will walk away with a record of 0-2 win the 25th comes to an end. Cool to see some CHIKARA stars making the trek to ROH once again. Cheech & Cloudy used to be a part of Special K back in the early days of ROH, while The Osirian Portal have been nothing short than a team on the rise with their wacky behavior. If you remember, it was nearly two years ago when Steen & Generico were in a Do or Die situation against The Briscoes, and now they are the Tag Team champions of the world. Who knows, we could see future ROH stars born here. Go vs. Necro should be nothing short of stiff and brutal; while Aries and Jacobs, who had a great brawl on New Horizons, will try to add some much need gasoline to the lightly burning fire that was once a near white-hot feud. Question? Do you think that Roderick Strong might ask Brent Albright to show no remorse on Sweet & Sour Inc. anytime soon?

-The main event matches for 11/7 in Montreal and 11/8 in Toronto have been signed. "Death Before Dishonor VI" last August in Manhattan featured a Four Way Elimination Match for the World Title. ROH officials were so happy with how this match went that they have signed another to be the main event of 11/7 in Montreal. This one will feature four current champions, but only the ROH World Title will be on the line. 11/7 in Montreal will see ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness vs. FIP World Heavyweight Champion Go Shiozaki vs. ROH World Tag Team Champion Kevin Steen vs. ROH World Tag Team Champion El Generico in an Elimination Match. There are lots of questions in this one.
-
A rematch of the "Respect Is Earned II" pay-per-view main event will take place on 11/7 in Montreal. It will have Jimmy Jacobs & Tyler Black vs. Bryan Danielson & Austin Aries with the winners challenging for the ROH World Tag Team Titles on 11/21 in Dayton, OH. Check the main page of ROHwrestling.com for an article called "I Have An Idea" for all the information on why this match is taking place.
-
A grudge match has also been signed for 11/7 in Montreal. It will pit Roderick Strong vs. Davey Richards. These two recently battled for almost 25 minutes in Japan. Now the feud between these former No Remorse Corps partners comes to Canada.

The four way at Death Before Dishonor VI (a show I hope to review very soon) was an amazing main event that I would love to see again. But with the competitors, you have to wonder if anyone thinks Nigel has a true chance at losing. The “Respect Is Earned II” rematch can’t be anything short of a show stealer. If it’s half as good as their PPV contest, it’s still better than 3/4s of the matches already this year. And you can’t go wrong with stiff action between two of the stiffest men in ROH with Richards and Strong.

-We already know that Kevin Steen & El Generico will defend the ROH World Tag Team Titles for the first time when ROH returns to Toronto on 11/8. Their first challengers will be the team that they could never defeat for the belts in Jay & Mark Briscoe. Now two more matches have been signed. The first is a very unique bout as ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness takes on The Necro Butcher. It has not been decided yet if this will be for the ROH World Title.
-Also just signed for 11/8 in Toronto is Jerry Lynn vs. Davey Richards.

While Necro doesn’t have the best win/loss record in ROH, I think if Nigel is the champion, it should be for the title. Could you imagine the reaction from the fans during the bout? From a match standpoint, this could be a great clash of styles, or one of the most bizarre matches of the year. As with any match involving Jerry Lynn, and a wrestler who can carry his own, I can’t wait to see this one on DVD. Canada will have an incredible weekend of action.

One of the reasons that things have been quiet this past week is that ROH officials have been working on some new deals. We hope to have some good news to report from these deals in the upcoming weeks. Stay tuned....

I really don’t have much of a clue what the announcements could be. I’m assuming it will have something to do with future shows, including Final Battle 2008. Maybe a huge guest, or one night appearance. A dream match? Well, whatever it is, I’m excited to hear what it is.

The Wrestler made its U.S. debut last night in New York City. Several ROH personalities including owner Cary Silkin and ring announcer Bobby Cruise were at the screening. The film's stars, as well as director Darren Aronofky, were also at the screening. (Pwinsider)

Very cool. I’ve heard that Necro Butcher is even listed in the credits for his role. You know what that means: Necro is bringing it Hollywood, West Virginia style, son.

The ROH events originally scheduled for this weekend in Florida have been postponed and will now take place on 2/6 in Coral Springs and 2/7 in Orlando. Tickets for the postponed events will be honored in February.

Great to hear for all those Floridian ROHbots. I figured that it would be around February for the rescheduling. Nothing much more I can add as a lot of things can, and will, happen before then. Who knows, maybe a record could be broken by then. And speaking of records…

October 6th was the one-year anniversary of the crowd in Edison, NJ exploding after Nigel McGuinness pinned Takeshi Morishima in the main event of the "Undeniable" pay-per-view to become the new ROH World Champion. Now over 365 days later McGuinness keeps growing stronger and gaining momentum as ROH World Champion to become the leading candidate for wrestler of the year.

It’s been over a year now that Mr. McGuinness finally toppled the Japanese monster, Takeshi Morishima, to become the tenth Ring of Honor World champion. While ROH has a great summary of Nigel’s reign on their website, I can’t help but give another view of Nigel’s now record breaking reign, from a ROHbot perspective.

Before Nigel became the champ, the fans were clamoring for the London native to finally ascend to the top of the ROH food chain. With the exits of Samoa Joe, Christopher Daniels, and Homicide only months earlier, the fans expected ROH to give us a champion that wouldn’t leave us anytime soon. With Morishima’s commitments to NOAH, we didn’t have faith that the big man was that person. Many of us felt that the trigger to Nigel’s reign should’ve been pulled a little quicker (with me in the boat of doing it at the “Live In Tokyo” event). ROH knew the only way to make good on McGuinness finally becoming the champion was to do it on pay-per-view. And at the Undeniable PPV taping, that’s what happened. And the crowd went wild. Then the crowd went mild. Wait, they got what they wanted, right? Nigel as the ROH champion. Oh yeah, then Nigel got hurt. And instead of taking time off, Nigel tried to work through it, putting on short matches to prevent further injury. And the ROHbots crapped on it. Just a month into his reign, statements were popping up on message boards that Nigel’s reign was going to be near Xavier levels of catastrophe.

And you know what, they’re right. Not that Nigel’s reign has been horrible. Xavier’s wasn’t either. When Nigel finally turned heel as champion, he became just like the second ROH champion. You see, when Xavier won the title off of Low Ki back in 2002, the fans, from that moment until Samoa Joe toppled him, wanted nothing more than someone, anyone, take the title away from him. Did they think he was undeserving? Maybe. Did they think he couldn’t put on the quality matches that of a Low Ki? Probably. Did they hate him with enough passion to pay and see him lose the title? Oh, most definitely. Since the 6th Anniversary Show, Nigel has done everything in his power to make you want to pay to see him get his just desserts, and every time it never happens. For over a year now, a majority of the ROHbot nation have wanted to see someone, anyone, topple Nigel. And it just doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. Claudio Castagnoli, beat him. Tyler Black, beat him. El Generico, beat him. Jimmy Jacobs, beat him. Roderick Strong, beat him. Chris Hero, beat him. Kevin Steen, beat him. Go Shiozaki, beat him. Bryan Danielson…beat him, but still has to face him one more time on pay-per-view. If there’s anyone who has a chance at beating Nigel, it’s him…or so everyone thinks.

No matter, that’s not the point. The point is Nigel has created a great legacy already with, right now, the third longest World title reign in ROH history. While it can be argued that Nigel doesn’t have the overall greatest title reign. You can’t argue against the fact that Nigel has had the greatest ROH World title reign any heel has ever had. No man, not Xavier, not Aries, not even CM Punk, has had the fans clamoring for someone to step up and take the ROH World title like Nigel McGuinness has. You might not see it now, but I guarantee when the McGuinness reign is over, you’ll be licking his boots in appreciation at the single greatest run any heel has had with any title in ROH history.

Well, that’s all for this week. As I said earlier, I have a big surprise for the next ROHbot Report. I will have an exclusive interview with ROH Tag Team champion Kevin Steen for all of you ROHbots out there. Always be on top of the smile inducing sales going on at rohwrestling.com, as well as all the latest news.

Till then.
