The ROHbot Report: 15 Questions With Kevin Steen, Gabe-Gate 2008, Return Of Homicide Weekend Results, Return of "Pro-Wrestling", and More
By James Bullock
Welcome to the biggest ROHbot Report to date. Honestly, it’s hard for me to think that there’ll ever be one bigger than this one. Not only do we have an exclusive interview with one half of the Ring of Honor Tag Team champions, Kevin Steen, but we also have the results and fallout from last weekend’s events. And I’ll give you my thoughts on one of the biggest developments in ROH history: Rhett Titus could become a reality star with your help. Oh, and there’s that other thing, Gabe-Gate 2008.
Ring of Honor Announcement
I was web surfing before dinner Sunday when I stumbled upon this. My mouth dropped open, probably like everyone who read it, because I never saw this coming. If there was one person every ROHbot knew about when it came to the creation of storylines, and crediting to the success of the company, it was Gabe. No offense to Cary Silkin, or even the wrestlers, but everyone who follows ROH feels Gabe’s name is synonymous with the company, and for good reason. I had the opportunity to meet Gabe in passing at the first Manassas show, and he was so polite and friendly toward me, even though he was rushing to get everything straight before bell time. Okay, enough butt kissing. I don’t fell like getting into the whole, “What happened? How did Gabe piss off Cary this badly to get fired?” All I know is Gabe spoke out and said:
"There was no fight or hard feelings. I understand Cary's decision. I love ROH and hopefully everyone will give the new direction a chance."
And with that, I’d like to look at
the other part of the story. ROHbots have gone crazy about the new direction of the company. Many think that ROH is going to become more sports entertainment than wrestling, with the storylines taking a page from WWE and TNA. While I understand that Ring of Honor a company built on pure pro-wrestling, I’m not really upset about this announcement, especially with the confirmation of the new booker:
Former NWA Champion Adam Pearce has been hired as ROH's new booker. He sent out an email to the ROH crew yesterday stating he'd be booking the promotion from now on.
Yes, “Scrap Iron” Adam Pearce, who was a part of a recent cost cutting procedure just weeks ago, has come back to do the job Gabe’s been doing since the start. A lot of fans are already crapping on this decision, as Adam Pearce is such a throwback, old school wrestler that there’s no way the company will retain the high impact, go-all-out style that we’re accustomed to. I disagree with this feeling. While Pearce doesn’t wrestle the style of, say a Mark Briscoe, doesn’t mean he’s going to limit the guys that can and do. Even with that, Pearce, being the old school type of guy he is, can help a lot of guys with the old adage “less is more.” Slow down, sell the moves, and make the people genuinely care without killing yourself.
Hopefully Pearce will also help some of the wrestlers who are having a hard time truly breaking out, further fleshing out their characters, and helping them connect with the fans on a level of the top stars of the past and present. Pearce, who is a great promo guy, should be able to get a few people over that maybe even Gabe couldn’t. But just a tip to Adam Pearce, please don’t make everyone wear 1970 style ring robes/jackets.
Another concern is that the quality of the shows will go down with Pearce holding the book with his old school mentality. People forget that Pearce has been around long enough to understand how to book a card where the fans are enjoying every match while not forcing you to sit through a four-hour show. Once again, less is more. And if you haven’t noticed, this process has already begun. Remember, not every match on the show should go twenty plus minutes with near falls going into double digits. You need to save something for the main event, and I think Adam Pearce understands that better than most, you know, being a wrestler and all.
If there’s one thing I agree with those hysterical ROHbots out there, I’ll say Adam Pearce, if he comes back and actual wrestles, needs to either admit he’s holding the book or never make reference to it. Everyone knows the problems with wrestlers being bookers at the same time. We’ve seen the curse of the Midnight Rider and the ending of Goldberg’s historic streak by two wrestlers who happened to be booking. I think Adam will be under more a microscope than a Dusty Rhodes or Kevin Nash due to the cult like atmosphere of ROH. Once again, I think “The Scrap Daddy” thought about this long before we did. While I’d love Gabe to still be around, I won’t throw in the towel on the company like a few ROHbots have before we see what the Canada shows hold. I think we’ll get a good idea what the future of Ring of Honor holds from a creative perspective.
Gabe Sapolsky has stepped down as the booker of Florida's Full Impact Pro. With him being released from ROH, it was no longer feasible for him to continue working for FIP since he would go down to Florida to work on the production of ROH DVDs.
Not really shocked about this one since FIP and ROH are working hand and hand now. I don’t know who will be getting the shot at the minor’s big time from FIP now with a whole new set of eyes checking out the FIP pool. Only thing I’d like to note is the fact it sounds like they thought Gabe would sabotage DVDs if he helped out. I try to add something to nothing.
Well, with all the commotion, a lot of people have forgotten about the shows that occurred only days before, both featuring Homicide’s return under the LAX banner. Did the ROH legend live up to his name and steal the show with his big buddy? Lets see.
Danbury, CT.
1)
Well, my prediction score is dropping lower and lower with every event. Outside of both Briscoes losing, Go keeping the FIP title, and Sara killing girls, I was wrong about everything. I'm feeling for Claudio right now. His heel turn has come to a stuttering stall, with loss after loss. I don't know if they’re buying time until Danielson is free, or what, but he needs some wins. Some squashes can't hurt. The main event, from the reports, was off the chain (Tazz royalty included). LAX was said to be motivated like never before, and tore it down. The only problem I have is that the champs didn't win a fall. Even with that, Steenerico have a host of definite challengers, including LAX if they return in the near future. Some of the best news coming out of the show, especially for us Embassy wannabe members, is the possible return of Prince Nana. I don’t know if this is the reformation of a new Embassy, or Nana’s getting ready to wrestle again. Either way, it’s great to see Nana as I’ve always liked the way he works. For those who haven’t had the privilege to see Nana working as a wrestler or a manager, you’ll be up for a treat if he is back in ROH. I don't know if it was the fact that Homicide was back, or if the card was just loaded that way, but this show seems to rank with some of the best this year yet. DVD purchase, for sure.

While faction wars died slowly and painfully, some of the things that came from it (the rise of Sweet & Sour Inc., Strong’s return to a babyface for examples) has given a few people a chance to shine. Even though they fought, bled, and battered each other for over a year, it makes sense that Strong and Stevens would come together to fight S & S Inc. Think about it, without anyone by his side, who can Strong trust besides the man who took him to the limit time in and time out over the past year? Add Brent Albright into the mix, and I think we’ll see some great tag matches.
We have another grudge match to announce for Montreal. Eddie Edwards will oppose the man who has continually shunned the advances of Larry Sweeney, Erick Stevens!
The Sweet & Sour treadmill continues with Erick Stevens possibly mowing down Edwards, who is really growing fast. I don’t know if we’ll ever get the payoff of Sweeney getting his in the ring, but I hope we do…one day.
Kenny Omega returns to ROH on 11/7 in Montreal and 11/8 in Toronto.
The final opening in the contract to face the Briscoe Brothers in Montreal has been signed. Teaming with newcomer Kenny Omega will be none other than the brash Kenny King.
On 11/8 in Toronto, the announced match between Tyler Black and Kenny Omega will now be a 3-Way-Dance! Danielson vs. Black vs. Omega!
Omega is really getting thrown into the fire with his ROH return. I like the fact that Omega can sprinkle a little comedy into his stuff, and it could make the match all that much more interesting. Or it could be a none factor. Either way, I see Kenny taking the fall.
As for the tag match, I know for a fact that this will be the precursor to the beginning of this new direction for the company. I don’t think the Kenny’s have a chance of winning, but I have a feeling this won’t be the typical Briscoe squash. We could see something similar to Steenerico’s loss to The Briscoes nearly two years ago.
Jerry Lynn has been on a roll since joining the rank of ROH. "I am looking so forward to making my return to Canada," said Lynn. "The fans have treated my great over the years, and I feel like I'm up to the challenge of proving myself in both Montreal and Toronto." Lynn has his work cut out for him in both cities, as he'll face members of both the Age of the Fall (Montreal; Delirious) and Sweet-n-Sour Incorporated (Toronto; Davey Richards).
It’s a Jerry Lynn match, it has no choice but to be good. Add the fact that Delirious is on the craze; it shouldn’t be anything short of a good undercard bout. And his stuff with Davey should be just as solid.
Nigel McGuinness, meanwhile, won't find anything any easier should be remain champion after Montreal. He's signed on to face the Necro Butcher in Toronto title match or not. But before Necro gets that opportunity, he'll have to get past the challenge of the newest AOTF member, the mammoth Brodie Lee, in Montreal.
Brodie and Necro have had some wars in other organizations, and I think a stiff, wild brawl between two of the largest men in the company will be a nice change. And even though I’ve said ROH needs to cut back on the brawls, I think this is a nice announcement. As for his match with Nigel, I’m really excited about finding out how the match turns out.
Last time in Dayton, Chris Hero vs. Roderick Strong stole the show. However, Strong was not happy with the result as Hero KO'ed him after using his mysterious elbow pad. The rematch will take place when ROH returns to Dayton on 11/21. This time it will be Strong vs. Hero in a Lights Out Match.
With Hero becoming perfect in his striking ability, and Strong being one of the stiffest wrestlers in the world, you know a lot of people will be cringing during this contest.
The booking committee is pleased to announce that Irish Airborne will be making their return to the ROH squared circle. Injuries have kept the twin duo from tag team competition for several months, but they're poised to make their impact once again. Dave Crist commented, "We're back to being 100% physically, and we're so excited for the opportunity to show what we're capable of. And there's no better place for us to do it than in Dayton!"
Well, ROHbots, you’ve gotten your wish. For those who don’t know, a cry has been made for the past few months that I.A. should come back and do what they do best, job. Hey, every company needs a job squad.
Former Ring of Honor World Champion Samoa Joe will make his long awaited return to Ring of Honor on Saturday, November 22nd as a part of the ROH "Rising Above" PPV taping in Chicago Ridge, IL. Joe, who last wrestled for Ring of Honor on March 4th, 2007 in Liverpool, England will be in a non PPV main event match in Chicago.
I believe this was one of the big deals ROH was referring to a few weeks back, and what a deal it is. Samoa Joe is another icon when it comes to ROH, as all of you know. Even though I don’t know what’s going on in his head, I have to think that maybe Joe is starving for one of those matches. You know the ones I’m talking about. Joe hasn’t been able to run wild for a while, and I think ROH is the only place he can do it like he used to. I might be completely wrong, but I know that when that Godzilla theme open runs through the building, the man who once proclaimed himself as “Pro-Wrestling” we will be a little less confused about the company, and happier about seeing one of our own back home.
Samoa Joe will likely face Tyler Black at the 11/22 ROH show.
Well, that would be interesting to say the least. I doubt Joe would take the fall, but having Tyler Black, a definite future ROH top star, in the ring with an ROH legend can’t do anything but make Black look better when he finally wins the ROH World title (yes, I’m sticking to it).
The SHIMMER Championship will be on the line in Chicago on 11/22 as two of the best female wrestlers in the entire world will square off for the gold. Larry Sweeney leads the dominant Sara del Rey into battle against the formidable MsChif!
Honestly, I don’t like this. While the female battle of factions is good, the rematch of a history making title change shouldn’t be happening anywhere but SHIMMER. I also feel bad because the women matches at ROH events usually don’t get the time to have the great matches they have at SHIMMER events. At least we can finally see MsChif get some spotlight in ROH.
It's official!!! It was announced in the ROH Video Wire that ROH World Champion Nigel McGuinness vs. Bryan Danielson will main event ROH's next pay-per-view taping, scheduled for 11/22 in Chicago. This has been building on PPV since the start and now the match will finally take in Chi-Town. If McGuinness is still World Champion the title will be on the line. Many called their first PPV match at "Driven" the match of the year. That was on ROH's 2nd PPV. Now the rematch will finally take place on ROH's 9th PPV.
Everyone knew it was going to happen, and we knew it was going to happen before the end of the year. It’s been over a year in the making (PPV time wise). More recently, they’ve had, reportedly, a memorable contest in Japan in September, and their match at the 6th Anniversary Show in February was one of their best contests ever because of the great mix of technical prowess and storytelling. I think the match in Chicago will be very similar to the 6th Anniversary Show match, and might even surpass their
“Driven” MOTY.
This is really good for promoting future shows, but ROH needs to get these links on other websites to get further promotion. If there’s one thing ROH needs to work on is marketing, and getting those links out through other websites will help. Here’s a little help ROH from your residential insane ROHbot.
ROH officials are happy to announce a working relationship with the IWS promotion (www.syndicatewrestling.com). To that end, on November 7 in Montreal, ROH is happy to welcome the talents of Dan Paysan, Exess, Stupefied, and the Green Phantom! We look forward to seeing these four men in action in Montreal!
This could be a double edge sword with other young ROH talent getting pushed aside for IWS wrestlers to please them, or it could help produce the growth of future stars. Hopefully the latter will be the repercussion.

: As expected, KENTA pinned Bryan Danielson in 33:21 with the Go 2 sleep to win the GHC jr. title on 10/13 in Hiroshima before 2,500 fans, making the match with Marufuji most likely a title vs. title match with the GHC belt and All Japan World belt at stake.
I only put this in here because I missed it in the last Report. I know none of us expected his reign to be a long one, but the fact that it happened is still a good thing for not only Danielson, but ROH as well as NOAH has proven that they trust Ring of Honor with their talent, and now, their titles. And just a side note, Marufuji and KENTA had their match last weekend, and it went to a 60-minute draw of epic proportions.
Kensuke Sasaki and Katushiko Nakajima make their return to Ring of Honor for Final Battle weekend on Friday, December 26th in Philadelphia, PA and Saturday, December 27th in New York City.
That’s pretty cool that both men are coming back so soon. Either they had a ton of fun last time, or got a big payday, or both. No matter, it’s always cool to have a legend like Sasaki in an American ring. And Nakajima can use this to continue to spread his flashes of future greatness like KENTA and Marufuji before him.
With all of the controversy, the questionable future of our favorite wrestling company, the grand possibility that everything we ever thought about ROH changing, we need a good laugh. We need a look back. We need to think about everything that has made us enjoy this business. One person who’s done that very well over the past year and a half in Ring of Honor is “Mr. Wrestling” Kevin Steen. Kevin gave me the privilege of taking time out of his schedule to answer a few questions for all of the ROHbots. So here it is, 15 questions with Kevin Steen.
JB: What was your first memory of wrestling, and did it make you say, “This is what I want to do?"
KV: My dad rented a tape of Wrestlemania 11. I remember watching it with him and seeing The British Bulldog team with Lex Luger against The Blue Brothers in the first match. I liked what I saw right away, really liked the way Davey Boy Smith wrestled. I'd say he was my first favorite wrestler ever...but that lasted about 2 hours. On that same event was Diesel vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWF championship. After I saw that match and the way Shawn Michaels could wrestle, I knew I had found what I wanted to do with my life. I was 11 at the time.
When did you and El Generico figure out that as a team, you could run through any tag division in the world?
After our first match with the Briscoes I think. We had teamed here and there a couple of times before that but that match is really what made me realize the potential we had as a team, that we could definitely get somewhere as a duo and have good, action packed, entertaining matches. Then I told Generico what I thought and he agreed right away. I'm actually pretty sure he didn't know what I was saying but was just really happy that I had actually spoke to him without using the words "moron","assh***","f*** you", "rub this" or "if you ever touch me there again I'll kill you!"
When did you hear about Ring of Honor?
Right around the time it opened. I didn't follow independent wrestling at all back then so I didn't actually see a show until November 2004 when Generico and I drove down to the Weekend Of Thunder show in Boston with Beef Wellington. We gave ROH officials our tape and waited for their call, and about a month later it came.
You got a couple of spot shots in ROH back in 2005, but nothing came from it in terms of a full-time spot on the roster. You returned, with El Generico by your side, in 2007. What changed between those two years that made Kevin Steen a guaranteed future ROH star?
I'm not really sure. I guess I matured as a wrestler. I went to Japan for 2 months with Dragon Gate and got to wrestle some of the best wrestlers in the world, guys like CIMA, Dragon Kid, Genki Horiguchi and Mochizuki just to name a few. I also worked for PWG on a regular basis for those 2 years and got to work with tremendous wrestlers month in and month out and when you wrestle people like that, you just can't help but learn. But I think what made the biggest difference is that during my first "run", all I did was wrestle. I wasn't being myself, I was just trying to go out there and have good wrestling matches but without any of the attitude and character I bring to the ring now. The second time around, I figured there's nothing to lose in just being myself, and if it works it works...and it did.
It was February 2007, during ROH’s Fifth Year Festival that the genesis of what would become, arguably, the feud of the year with you & Generico and The Briscoes. Did you feel that after that match, the future battles would move away from wrestling matches into the wildest brawls in ROH tag team history?
Well, after feeling Jay Briscoe's forearms and kicks for about a week and a half after the match, I knew that there was definite potential for this to get ugly really quickly. And once we stated that we wanted a shot at the titles, things did get ugly. Sure, me hitting Mark in the head after his concussion didn't help matters but I was just trying to do him a favor and even out the back of his head with a hole to match the hole his two front teeth created when they left him. Jay got upset though, things were said and well, the rest is history.
When it was all over, you and Generico couldn’t dethrone The Briscoes, but Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black of the Age of the Fall did just a few months later. Do you think you wore The Briscoes out enough for Black & Jacobs to run in and pick up the pieces, or did they have something that yourself and Generico didn’t?
They have some pretty ridiculous hair and make-up but besides that, I don't see what they have that we don't. Plus, Generico has a mask and neither of those guys do. As far as them defeating the Briscoes, all I can say is I do think the timing of their debut wasn't a coincidence. They first jumped the Briscoes after the ladder war when both of them were down, beaten and bloodied. I think Jacobs is a very smart guy and he knew exactly what he was doing attacking them and getting into their heads right after we had just spent the better part of 9 months giving the Briscoes some of the toughest battles they had ever had.
You kind of spread you wings this year by going after Nigel McGuinness and the ROH World title. But you got screwed out of the title on the first two chances, causing you to get frustrated enough to put yourself on a ROH title deadline. And even though you couldn’t win the ROH title before the deadline, you did accomplish you original goal by winning the ROH World Tag Team title. How does it feel to finally have ROH gold around your waist?
Well, I won't lie. Winning the World title would have been just incredible and it's definitely something I still have my eyes on. But winning the Tag titles, especially after the amount of work and energy we had put into it, and the atmosphere that night in Boston, it was simply the best moment of my career so far.
Going back to your Nigel matches, what was it like to make history in being a part of the first ever ROH World title match on an ROH event in your home country?
I remember it being nerve racking. I felt like a zombie all week before the Toronto show, because all I could think about was winning that title. I knew that this would be my last shot for a little while and if I was gonna do it, Toronto had to be the night. In the end, Nigel prevailed but I think I took him to the limits and did pretty well for myself, especially after coming very close to breaking my back in that match. I have another shot coming up very soon, and this time it's in my hometown so I'm planning on making the most of that. Too bad Generico is going to have to watch me walk away with the title.
But with the title of “champion” comes challengers, and you and Generico have a slew of challengers gunning for you. From your old buddies The Briscoes (who will be your first challengers), to the Age of the Fall, to Sweet & Sour Inc., to, maybe, even LAX. Who are you most excited about taking on en route to, hopefully, a long well deserved reign?
I'm looking forward to defending the titles against anybody who thinks they're good enough to take them from us. I'd love to get a rematch with the Machine Guns. Facing American Dragon and Austin Aries would be great. I love wrestling Davey Richards and it seems like Hero and him are gunning for us now so we'll gladly take them on. I'm excited at the prospect of kicking any of those guys' asses but I have to admit, beating the Briscoes is what I am most looking forward to.
Even though you are the ROH Tag Team champion, you haven’t forgotten about the ROH World title. You and El Generico will be involved in a four-way elimination match for the gold in Montreal on 11/7. Will you two team up and eliminate everyone before going one on one, or will it be every man for himself when the bell rings?
Well, I guess the smartest way to go about things would be teaming up and trying to get Go and Nigel out, especially since we've beaten them as a team in the past but Generico knows better than to trust me. He knows that if it means winning the World title, I'll do anything...Well, I mean, I wouldn't stab him the back or anything but I'd definitely shove, punch or kick him in the back if it meant becoming the champ.
Just a few quick questions, and I’ll let you go “Mr. Wrestling.”
What has been you favorite match thus far in your ROH tenure?
I've had a lot of matches that I've really enjoyed but the Boston Street Fight with the Briscoes was by far my favorite. Just an insane fight. Little known fact about that match, Generico lost a testicle. Like, he literally lost it during the match. He was looking for it at one point in the crowd, he said he saw it roll underneath one of the chairs but Jay jumped him before he could retrieve it. After the show we went looking for it once the people had left, but no luck. It's okay though, later that night we stopped at a truck stop and I got Generico one of those green gumballs from a machine. Now he's as good as new!
Will we see a battle of the piledrivers between yourself and Jerry Lynn anytime soon?
No, because once I hit mine, he's not getting up to give me his, you can bet on that. You might see a battle of the hip-lock takeovers though!
What’s on rotation on Kevin Steen’s Ipod/MP3 player and in your car?
I don't have an Ipod or MP3 player, I use a good ol' CD player that skips all the time. It gives me a reason to swear in public. And to answer your question, I'm all about Guns N' Roses. Lies and Use Your Illusion 2 especially. My son was actually born to Patience. I was trying to play Sweet Child Of Mine but the stupid cd kept skipping. I bet you all think I'm joking but it's 100% true.
If you could have dinner with three people, who would it be?
Well, this might seem weird but Adolf Hitler, Larry David and Steve Austin. Hitler because I would like to try and understand how someone can become so evil, Larry David because I love Seinfeld and can't get enough of Curb and would just enjoy his company and Austin because I met him in an airport once and while I did get to talk to him for a little while, I wish we could have talked for a lot longer. Plus, Larry David and Hitler would probably get into a great debate at some point and Austin and I could just sit back and listen to them. I'm sure it would be hysterical. Oh, and I'd add Chris Bosh from PWG fame too. He's the funniest man alive. Yeah, I know you said 3 but what are you gonna do?
Anything you’d like to plug?
Yeah! I just bought this kick ass new TV actually and I'm about to plug that so...
In all seriousness, this isn't really a plug but just something I want to mention. Right now a lot of people are wondering where ROH is heading. I would just like to say that while Gabe did what I think was a very good job and I appreciated working with him for the last 2 years, I'm also looking forward to working with the new management and seeing where that takes us. People seem to think that ROH will become this completely different company and that the essence of what was appealing to a lot of people about ROH, the great wrestling, will be put on the backburner but that's just crazy. We still have the same locker room with the same drive and heart and dedication and in the end, nothing will change the fact that wrestling is what we all do best...except for Rhett Titus. He's a good wrestler but he once told me that his greatest skill was that he can grow a third leg! I'm not too sure how that works but that's quite a talent!
I want to thank “Mr. Wrestling” for hooking us up with an interesting interview to say the least. Stand up guy he is.
He told me to say that or I wouldn’t be standing up anymore. Um… if you know the whereabouts of Generico’s missing testicle, contact the ROH offices. I know Kevin said he’s good as new, but I think Generico would want to have possession of his stuff, you know.
