ROH TV Episode 44: 8th Anniversary Main Event Announced, El Generico vs. Kenny King, The Briscoes, And More

By James Bullock Jan 27, 2010 - 6:51 PM

1/25/10: At Final Battle 2009, Austin Aries outran Tyler Black, dashing Black’s hopes of winning the ROH World title. Will Black ever get another shot?

Jim Cornette was in the ring to talk about the ROH World title match from Final Battle 2009, where the ROH fan base was polarized over the result. Cornette asked both participants from that bout to enter the ring so they could talk about their feelings over the match. Black was given the microphone first. Tyler expressed his frustration of Aries running out the clock to avoid truly fighting Tyler. Black followed up by admitting he knows about the loss of faith from the fans due to the match ending the way it did. But Black also knows he can beat Aries. Austin rebutted by telling Black of a story during the days of the dinosaurs, “To be the man, you have to beat the man.” Seriously, Aries just said people were using that phrase before they barely understood fire. Oh, now I get it; Ric Flair is old. Back to the argument. Aries informed Black that he wouldn’t be getting a rematch. Cornette felt for Tyler because he heard Black was a future franchise star when Cornette was offered a job in Ring of Honor. Cornette also felt that Aries was a coward, and screwed the fans out of a great match. That’s why on 2/13 in NYC, we will have a Final Battle main event rematch. The difference between the previous contest and this one is the fact that there will be three judges at ringside to decide who wins if the match goes to a draw. The champion and challenger will choose two of those judges, while Cornette himself decides the third before the end of the evening.

ROH World Tag Team champions The Briscoes vs. Up In Smoke (Cheech & Cloudy)
Huge, “Man up,” chant before the honorable handshake. Jay and Cheech kicked this one off, with Cheech head scissoring Briscoe to get an early advantage. Jay quickly turned it around with forearm smash. Mark tagged in, belly-to-belly suplexing Cheech for a two count. All of a sudden, the lights went out. When they came back on, Cloudy tornado DDT’ed Mark. It didn’t help Cloudy much as he got knocked down. Jay came back in, spine busting Cloudy after blocking the waist lock. The Briscoes were in complete control after a double team flapjack. Huge double team hip toss across the ring on Cloudy after some Briscoe knife-edge chops. Cloudy avoided the senton splash by Mark, tagging out. Cheech knocked Mark off his feet with cross body block. Cheech followed up with a moonsault that got him a near fall. Unique double team by Up In Smoke that ended with Cheech slinging Mark into Cloudy’s downward spiral. Jay saved his brother from being pinned. Mark ducked the double clothesline, exploder suplexing Cheech before using an enzuguri on Cloudy. Iconoclasm almost got Mark the pin, but Cheech stopped the sure three count. Cloudy countered the Doomsday Device, almost pinning Jay. When Jay got to his feet, he clotheslined Cloudy inside out. Jay pressed Cloudy over his head, into the Death Valley Driver to get the pin for his team.

Kyle Durden was in the ring with the champs. The Briscoes wanted to run down the good name of the Kings of Wrestling when The American Wolves sauntered down the aisle. Davey put his team over as the true kings of wrestling. Eddie informed The Briscoes they wanted their rematch. Before something could happen between The Wolves and the champs, Dark City Fight Club hit the ring, leading to a three team shoving contest. The locker room somewhat emptied to separate the three arguing teams.

Earlier tonight, we were informed that on 2/13, Austin Aries will defend his ROH World title against Tyler Black, with three judges at ringside. Who will those judges be? We’ll find out tonight.

At Final Battle 2009, Kevin Steen turned on his longtime partner El Generico. Why? Steen thought Generico called his mother something derogatory in Spanish.

Kyle Durden was with El Generico in the back to talk about the previous incident. Generico was too upset to even talk. Cabana walked with the brokenhearted “Generic Luchador” off the scent

Skullkrusher Rasche Brown vs. Bobby Shields
Shields tried to jump Brown, but it had no affect on the big man. Powerful palm strike to Shields’ chest sent Bobby across the ring. In the aisle, Prince Nana and Ernest Osiris watched Brown as he speared Bobby before hoisting Shields up for the Burning Hammer. SLAP THE PORPOISE, IT’S OVER FOLKS!

Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak pimped the ROH iPhone app. Download it today, it’s free. Also, the fans voted for The Young Bucks’ next contest on HDNet, and it’ll be The Bucks vs. The American Wolves in two weeks. Sadly, The Wolves promo shot is of them posing with the belts they no long own.

El Generico vs. Kenny King
This match will change the Pick 6 standings. Before the bell, King told Generico to shake his…well, his little King. Generico got jumped from behind before the bell. Kenny really didn’t follow up on it, just using the attack as a way to prove he’s one step ahead of Generico. After being outwrestled, Generico started throwing right hands. Generico followed up with a series of arm drags before mounting King on the ropes for a series of right hands. King turned the mount into an atomic drop, but Generico was ready. King came off the ropes, running into a leg lariat. King used the referee to his advantage, luring Generico into a cheap shot off the blind side. Generico felt some ground and pound. King whipped Generico into the turnbuckles, mocking Generico’s hurting back. King took too much time showboating, allowing Generico to slam Kenny over and over again. The referee didn’t allow Generico to attack King as he hung across the ropes, allowing Kenny to recover. When King rose, he caught Generico, using a hot shot to drive the wind out of the masked man. Slingshot leg drop by King only gets him a two count. King was having fun standing on Generico’s masked face. Generico exploded out of the corner, clotheslining King into the back body drop. Clothesline by Generico sent King to the floor. Generico followed up with a somersault plancha to down the rising King. King stopped Generico’s momentum by raking Generico in the eyes. Kenny used those shotgun knees to send Generico into the barricades. King missed his clothesline aimed for Generico, hitting the steel ring post instead. With King stunned against the post, Generico slid through the ropes, tornado DDT’ing King on the floor.
Generico had to use a lot of time and strength to push King back in before going for the pin. King was able to kick out, causing Generico to attempt another move. King countered, but Generico reversed King’s counter, Michinoku driving King for a two count. King stopped the yakuza kick in the corner by spinning heel kicking Generico. Generico fought King when Kenny put him on the top rope. Generico sprung off the top, but King caught him, swinging Generico into the Royal Flush. Somehow, Generico kicked out, shocking King. Kenny put Generico on the ropes again, only for Generico to push him off. King back flipped onto his feet. When King got to a vertical base, Generico rushed him, yakuza kicking King. King stopped Generico’s three count off the cradle. King reversed the springing tornado DDT, northern lights suplexing Generico into the turnbuckles. King executed a quick combination to set up his dancing. Generico used that to his advantage, or so he thought. King was ready for Generico’s yakuza kick, kicking Generico on the back of his head. Coronation by King gives Generico another loss.

Jim Cornette, Tyler Black, and ROH World champion Austin Aries were here once again to announce their judges for the 2/13 rematch. Aries explained that Judge Judy or Judge Joe Brown hadn’t returned his phone calls yet, so he had to go a step higher and enlist some royalty as his judge in the form of Kenny King. King told Cornette that he’d call it right down the middle. So who is Black’s judge? Black wanted someone who has a lot of respect for in regards of the battles they’ve waged over the past few months. And that man is Roderick Strong. Strong accepted the judge position because Black promised Strong the first title shot when Black wins. Jim Cornette decided that the third judge will be…Jim Cornette! Cornette made sure that both men understood that if the match goes into the judges’ hands, anything could happen.
