11/16/09: Tonight marks The Final Countdown for Bryan Danielson in Ring of Honor. Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak put over Danielson’s importance to ROH, and we’ll celebrate that tonight. But first…
Chris Hero w/Shane Hagadorn vs. Delirious
Before Delirious could come down the ramp, Sonjay Dutt jumped him from behind. Dutt was all over Delirious, slamming the masked man against the steel ring post. Hagadorn pitched Delirious in to officially start this one. One boot to Delirious’ back sent him to the floor for that senton while wrapped in the ring mats. Back elbow from Hero had Chris feeling, shall I say, awesome. Delirious slipped out of the slam, chopping Hero for some momentum. It didn’t last long as Hero kneed the running Delirious in the abdomen. Hero decided to drive Delirious’ wind from his body by elbowing him in the chest, then senton splashing him. Once again, an elbow ended Delirious’ comeback. After a couple of successful flash kicks, Delirious got caught with a third while dangling across the middle rope. One annoying kid kept yelling, “You suck,” at Hero, causing Hero to turn up the pressure. Delirious head-butted Hero, using a flying head scissors before attempting to lock in his cobra stretch. Delirious stopped the Rolling Elbow, dropkicking Hero across the ring, in position for the Panic Attack. Hero avoided Shadows Over Hell, using the Rolling Elbow. Somehow, Delirious kicked out of the match-ending move. Delirious stopped Hero’s combination, rolling him up for a couple of near falls. When Delirious went for a third, Hero countered with the Ripcord Rolling Elbow to KO Delirious. Dutt decided to come out and gloat over Delirious’ unconscious body.
Lets talk about some of Danielson’s great moments. At #2, Danielson can’t help but feel good about his “Gut Check” match with Colt Cabana in 2006 in Chicago. It was a match that went sixty minutes. The amazing part is Danielson separated his right shoulder some ten minutes deep. That’s what we call, “Manning up.”
Beard vs. Beard match: Necro Butcher & Grizzly Redwood vs. Prince Nana & Joey Ryan
If The Embassy loses, Ernie Osiris will have to shave. If Necro and Grizzly lose, so goes Redwood’s beard. Ryan and Redwood started this one off after Necro handed his staple gun to a fan. When Ryan didn’t fare well, he ran to a fleeing Nana for a tag. Necro did some waxing of Ryan’s chest hair before tagging out. Redwood felt the energy of his beard, but left himself wide open for a sneak attack from Ryan after getting distracted by Osiris. Nana finally tagged in, but didn’t stay in long after a couple of shots. Ryan stopped the back body drop, dropkicking Redwood before giving Nana the tag for some quick hits before tagging out again. Beard wringer by Nana on Redwood. Nana decided to fly, but Redwood moved. Necro was able to get the tag, leveling everyone in his path. Necro ran through Ryan’s clothesline, clobbering Ryan with a haymaker. Ryan stopped the Tiger Driver, super kicking Necro. Redwood reentered, trying to grab Nana. Ryan dove through the ropes, knocking Necro into the crowd. In the ring, Redwood slid through Ryan’s legs, tornado DDTing Joey for the win.
Redwood did the honors of snipping Osiris’ beard.
We see the teary highlights of Danielson’s last night in NYC for ROH. Some chick was actually crying. I’m a ROHbot too, but come on. I guess I can’t hate on emotional connections.
So what is Bryan Danielson’s favorite ROH moment? Well, it happens to be his favorite match (and easily in my top five) is the one with KENTA from Glory By Honor V: Night 2 in 2006. Danielson talks about how KENTA just abused his hurt shoulder, causing Danielson’s girlfriend at the time to just cry in horror because she knew how serious it was. But like his time limit draw with Cabana, Danielson pulled through like only a champion could.
Last week, Aries used a modified fireball to hurt Tyler Black. And in defense of Black, Colt Cabana will take on Austin Aries in two weeks.
On 10/19, Kenny King and Rhett Titus put Jerry Lynn out of action with a spike piledriver. Next week, Brent Albright will get his hands on King. So what does King have to say about it?
King moved those who are jealous of him, and who want to be like him in ROH. But there is only one king.
“Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown vs. Cameron Matthews
To save time, I’ll just call Matthews, “Jobber in the green tights.” Actually, that’ll take longer than this match to type over and over again. Burning Hammer on Matthews makes Hogewood…SLAP THE PORPOISE, IT’S OVER FOLKS!
We get a great highlight package of Danielson on HDNet.
Bryan Danielson vs. Roderick Strong
Stern collar & elbow led to a back & forth for some kind of advantage as the crowd went crazy for the ROH legend. Strong dropkicked his way out of wristlock to a few boos. Danielson rolled through the sunset flip, kicking Strong’s chest before putting him in the wristlock again. Both men were trying to get a hold of the other’s arms. Danielson did a better job than Strong, using every toss to free himself against Strong. When the tosses didn’t work, Strong countered with the first backbreaker of the evening. But Strong didn’t let up on the body contorting attacks. Big chop to Danielson’s chest after they tumbled into the ropes. Strong used his own back to bow & arrow Danielson’s before dropping him on his face. Danielson tried to fight his way to an advantage, but ran into a leg lariat instead. Danielson turned Strong’s submission against him, almost making Strong tap. Strong jumped to his feet, chopping Danielson until Bryan can’t stands no more. Danielson kneed Strong in the abdomen before almost kicking Strong’s spine through his chest. To put it back in position, Danielson kicked Strong’s chest until Strong was seated against the turnbuckles. Danielson ran up the ropes after Strong reversed the Irish whip, using the momentum to hit that running forearm. Danielson hooked Strong, using the surfboard to great approval. Danielson converted his signature hold into a failed pinning predicament.
Strong caught Danielson running with an enzuguri before executing another backbreaker. A couple of clotheslines left Danielson open for another backbreaker. Strong ducked his head for the back body drop a little too early, allowing Danielson to knee him in the face. Danielson wanted to use a missile dropkick, but ended up getting caught in the Stronghold. Danielson quickly countered by rolling Strong up for a two count. Strong stopped the crucifix, but not the hurricarana into a triangle choke. Strong was able to make it to the ropes to save himself. Strong slid to the floor, forearming Danielson when Bryan tried to dive on him. Danielson kneed his way out of the backbreaker on the apron, dropkicking Strong to the floor before baseball sliding Strong into the crowd. Danielson sprung off the top rope, diving into the fifth row to level Strong.
The fans were thoroughly behind Danielson as he pushed Roderick back in. Missile dropkick from Bryan led to a running knee for another two count. Strong countered Cattle Mutilation, but ended up in a shoulder lock. Strong worked his way off the mat, locking in the Stronghold. Danielson flipped out of it, stomping Strong’s face before locking Roderick in the triangle choke again. Strong powered Danielson off the mat, slamming him Quinton “Rampage” Jackson style. But Danielson refused to let go. On the third pick up, Strong used a backbreaker out of the power bomb. Both men stumbled to the feet, leading to a chop battle. Danielson tried to use a rolling elbow. Strong countered, executing another set of backbreakers. Danielson valiantly fought to his feet before getting crotched on the top turnbuckle. Danielson countered the superplex, belly to back superplexing Strong instead. Before Strong could move, Danielson locked in Cattle Mutilation. Strong countered with the gut-buster/Gibson Drive combo, but couldn’t put Danielson away with it. Danielson countered the super gut-buster attempt with some elbows. When it appeared Strong was out, Strong jumped up, kicking Danielson in the face before using the super gut-buster. Running big boot from Strong was able to put Danielson down for the three count.
Everyone fan in attendance was standing as Roderick thanked Danielson for making ROH what it is. The locker room emptied to show respect to “American Dragon” Bryan Danielson.
