6/7/10: We open with a comprehensive look at the ROH World title situation coming off of the recent big shows and HDNet episodes involving Tyler Black, Davey Richards, Roderick Strong, and Austin Aries. And two of those aforementioned names will be involved in tonight’s main event when ROH World champion Tyler Black faces Austin Aries in a non-title match.
El Generico vs. Ricky Reyes
When Generico entered the ring, Reyes immediately attacked him. Generico fought back, but ended up getting clotheslined and belly to back suplexed. A butterfly suplex only gets Reyes a two count. Generico sunset flipped his way out of a power bombing, but couldn’t hold Reyes down for three seconds. Once again, Reyes turned the tides with a flying strike. Prazak asks why Generico wears the mask. Hogewood responds, “Because it’s impressive.” Wow. Back to the action-we get a strong style strike exchange that shows both men have fighting spirit. Generico caught Reyes running with the Michinoku driver. Reyes avoided the yakuza kick in the corner, using a cradle belly to back suplex. Ricky was shocked that Generico kicked out. Reyes wanted to hit a running attack in the corner, but Generico followed him from behind. Reyes spun around, right into the yakuza kick. Brain Buster by Generico and…SLAP THE PORPOISE, IT’S OVER FOLKS!
Mike Hogewood and Dave Prazak give us a foreword for the video package that showed the history between El Generico and Kevin Steen from Final Battle 2009 to now. At Death Before Dishonor VIII, Generico and Steen will finally fight one on one.
Kyle Durden was with Steve Corino and Kevin Steen-who is wearing a swank hoodie-to talk about Corino’s match with his fellow ECW alumni, Jerry Lynn. Steve noted that as great as Lynn is, Corino’s that much better because he’s at the top of his game. And that game just doesn’t involve the physical, but also the mental aspects of this thing we call, “pro wrestling”. And who knows more about mental games than Corino? Steen-showing his kind nature-offers Durden some gum. When Kyle accepts, Steen spits his gum in Kyle’s face before leaving. Hey, Durden should be glad it came from his mouth, and not his nose.
Jerry Lynn vs. Steve Corino
Corino is rocking his Mr. Wrestling 3 tights. When both men enter the ring, an, “ECW,” chant rings out. Corino offers the handshake, leading to a forearm exchange in the middle of the ring. Corino ended the strike battle, only to find his shoulders on the mat in a couple of pinning combinations. Lynn was all over Corino, sending him to the floor in hopes of finding some haven. It didn’t work well at all as Lynn whipped and knocked Corino into the barricades. When the action returned to the ring, Corino scooped Lynn off his feet. Jerry countered with a reverse DDT before dropkicking him to the floor.
Somersault senton off the apron downs Corino. Mr. Wrestling 3 reversed an Irish whip, sending Lynn back first into the barricades. Lynn paid Corino back by sending him into the guardrail off an Irish whip reversal. Lynn had Corino reeling on the floor when Corino got underneath him. Steve used a hot shot to drive Lynn’s face against the apron. Lynn rolled into the ring as Corino reached into his tights for something. Out of the referee’s view, Corino jabbed Lynn on the forehead with an international object. Corino locked Lynn in an abdominal stretch. To add insult to injury, Corino used his thumb to anally rape Lynn. No, I’m serious. After two vicious penetrations, the referee saw what Corino was doing and stopped it. Not because it’s illegal, but just for the sake of Lynn’s bunghole.
This allowed Lynn to hip toss his way to freedom. Jerry drove the dirty finger into Corino’s own mouth. Lynn was fired up and sore as he clotheslined Corino. Rolling eye poke, followed by a back rake from Lynn sets up the super rana. Corino spun out of the Cradle Piledriver attempt, hitting Old School Expulsion. Somehow, Lynn kicked out before the three count. Both men struggled for a head-dropping move. Lynn avoided being driven on his cranium, but couldn’t stop the sliding clothesline. As Corino rose from the mat, Colt Cabana hit the ring to pay him back for all the interference Steve has brought during his matches.
Kevin Steen was right behind Cabana, leading to a fistfight on the floor. Kenny King made his way to the ring to continue his feud with Lynn as the bell sounded to end this one. Before Cabana could be Package Piledriven, El Generico rushed down the aisle. The fans popped hard as Generico knocked Corino to the floor so he could confront Steen. All of a sudden, Corino yanked Generico outside before Steen and Generico could get the fightin’. Generico and Steve were brawling up the aisle as Steen kicked Cabana in the testicles. Package Piledriver on Cabana lays him out. Steen grabbed a chair. Before Kevin Steen could crack Cabana’s skull, Generico chased him out of the ring.
Coming next weekend is the ROH World title match that we’ve all been waiting for. Lets here from the competitors. Davey Richards admitted he doesn’t have a lot of natural talent like Claudio or Roderick (really), but does have a work ethic second to none. Tyler felt the same way in that he’s sacrificed by just trying to make it into the business by driving from Iowa to Chicago several times a week while working and going to school. Davey reflected on his growing up with his grandparents on a cow farm because he never met his father, and his mother was in and out of jail. The night he won his first pro wrestling title, his grandfather passed. Black also grew up in a small town, where the men in his life opened him up to the business.
In Davey’s opinion, winning the ROH World title would the culmination of his journey through his amateur and professional careers from the time he started wrestling at twelve. Black’s dream to be a wrestling champion started when he was sixteen, and he doesn’t want it to end just yet.
Davey didn’t want to take anything away from the ability of Tyler Black, and credited him for having one of the biggest hearts in the business. Davey knows that Black is the type of guy you can’t keep can’t down. Black sees Davey’s ability to come up with something new every time when he’s in the ring will be a definitive advantage for the challenger.
So who’s going to win? Both men understand the importance of the belt and what it means, but only Black puts out the verdict that he’ll be walking out still the World champion.
ROH World champion Tyler Black vs. Austin Aries
Black entered the ring with the old ROH World title belt even though we’ve seen videos all night showing the new title belt. Even on the last promo video with Black and Davey saw Tyler holding the new, winged ROH title belt. Black easily outwrestled Aries, causing A-Double to make his way to the floor. Aries reentered, kneeing Black in the abdomen instead of locking up. Kick to the back of the champ had Black writhing. When Aries went to pick Aries off the mat, Black went wild with right hands and kicks. Black gave Aries a taste of his own medicine by kicking him in the back off the snap mare. Big stomp to the side of Aries’ head had the fans clapping in approval. Aries avoided the running forearm in the corner, but not the Irish whip into the barricades when Aries yanked Black to the floor with him. Caperana off the barricades by Black knocked all of the wind out of A-Double. Black missed the springboard clothesline, but landed on his feet. When Aries turned around, he was taken down by a spinning heel kick. Aries kicked out of Black’s follow up pin as some chick yells out, “I love you Tyler!” I think Black got motivated off of that because he went for another caperana. Aries avoided the move, only for Black to land on his feet to attempt the standing shooting star press. Aries slid out of the ring, leaving Black wide open for a rope assisted neck breaker to the floor.
Aries had his sights set on the neck of the champ by connecting with a running knee, then a flying double axe handle. Black tried to fight back when the action returned to the ring, but found a knee to the stomach for his trouble. Aries used the ropes to stand on Black’s throat and neck. Aries moved his aimed to Black’s left leg. Once again, Black fought his way off the mat, looking for a dropkick. Aries avoided it, but got hoisted up for the F5. Aries slipped off of Black’s shoulders, clipping Black’s legs from behind. After using the shin breaker, Aries locked Black in the figure-whoo-four! Black held on long enough to pull himself to the ropes. A-Double pulled Black up from the apron. They started fighting on apron until Black slammed Aries’ face into the top turnbuckle over and over again.
Springboard clothesline by the champ had the fans behind him. Instead of using his legs to attack, Black just whipped Aries into the turnbuckles over and over again until Aries did the Flair turnbuckle bump. Aries refused to be a Flair clone, blocking the body slam from the top rope when Black caught him in mid-climb. Aries yanked Black up to the top with him before punching him to the mat. Black caught the flying Aries, hitting the F5…for a two count. Black tried to follow up, but Aries dropped him with the Brain Buster. Austin was about to have an aneurysm when Black kicked. After calming himself down, Aries went to the corner, stomping like Tyler. Black super kicked Aries out of midair instead of taking the IED. Aries made it to his feet to stop the Phoenix Splash by falling into the ropes. Black fell into the tree of woe, allowing Aries to dropkick Black on the injured leg. Aries grabbed Black’s leg for another figure four attempt, only to be inside cradled. Aries couldn’t kick out in time, giving the win to the champ.
Aries went crazy, beating down Black until Kenny King came out. Before King and Aries could spike piledrive Tyler, Jerry Lynn ran to ringside to beat King to the back. Roderick Strong made his way to the ring, beating on Aries to help Black. When Black shoved Strong to the side to attack Aries, Strong got angry. Black felt that anger in the form of a right hand upside his head. Black paid Strong back by kicking Strong in the face. Black back dropped Aries to the floor. The champ bounced off the ropes, somersaulting on top of Aries and Strong. In the audience watched a crazed Delirious as Black hoisted the ROH World title high.
