Hey all you ROHbots-and possible convertors-welcome to The ROHbot Report. Ring of Honor is rolling through the east coast for TV tapings this weekend, and I have the first half of what went down; and a preview of what to look forward to tonight if you’re haeading to the old ECW Arena. Alos, ROH is lining up its cards for next weekend’s Midwest shot. Enough of the pleasantries, I know you want to read about the action.
Pre-show:
A) Bobby Dempsey, Sid Reeves, & Andy Ridge def. Shiima Xion, John Kermon, & Bobby Shields. Dempsey with the pin fall after a Death Valley Driver on Bobby Shields.
B) Necro Butcher & Erick Stevens obliterated Robbie Wolf and Damien Dragon. Unsure of finish, sounds like Necro went over Dragon in record time.
C) Mark Bennett defeated Slyk Wagner Brown via sit-out chokeslam variation
Main Show:
1 ) Tag Wars 2010 Opening Round - The Dark City Fight Club over Shawn Daivari and Mr. Ernesto Osiris after hitting the Greater Good on Osiris.
2 ) 10 Minute Hunt - Eddie Edwards made Jay Freddie tap to the Achilles Lock.
3 ) Kenny King vs. Delirious. Austin Aries vs. Delirious is announced, only to have Aries come out and claim he's "sick" and King will take his place. Kenny King wins via rollup following the shotgun knees. King gained advantage due to outside distraction by Aries which led to the finish.
4 ) TV Main Event 1a - Jay Briscoe defeats Claudio Castagnoli with a quick pin...Hero runs out attack Jay, Mark is out to save prompting....
5 ) TV Main Event 1b - Mark Briscoe over Chris Hero after a backslide.
Tyler Black comes out and cuts a promo about the fans. Something about fans of his, fans of others, and fans of no one.
6 ) Necro Butcher vs. "Skullkrusher" Rasche Brown is declared a no-contest after the Embassy interferes, the locker room empties, and a brawl ensues. DCFC featured in the brawl...could be continuing into a program with the Embassy.
7 ) Non-Title Special Challenge - ROH World Champion Tyler Black vs. Christopher Daniels ends in a time limit draw.
Truth Martini & Roderick Strong come out to the ring post-match for a promo, Davey comes out as well...appears as though they are working to put over the Davey vs. Strong match later tonight.
8 ) Daizee Haze defeats Taeler(?) with the heart punch followed by a kick off the ropes.
9 ) Tag Team Special Attraction Steve Corino and Kevin Steen defeated The Super Smash Brothers after Player Dos was package piledriven and subsequently ate Corino's sliding clothesline, Corino with the pin.
10 ) Colt Cabana vs. Alex Anthony ended as a No Decision after Steen came out with a chair, followed by Steen with a chain. El Generico makes the save.
11 ) Jerry Lynn defeats Rhett Titus with a small package. Kenny King attacks Lynn post-match, Delirious makes the save.
12 ) The House of Truth (Christian Able & Josh Raymond) used their double team finisher to put away Mike Sydal who was teaming with Aden Chambers.
13 ) El Generico scores a win over Erick Stevens, albeit by DQ. Steen & Corino interfered to cause the DQ.
14 ) Strong's Guaranteed World Title Shot on the line Roderick Strong beats Davey Richards via flash rollup. Hagadorn came out to offer assistance which Davey refused, which gave Roddy the advantage. After the match there was a confrontation between Davey & Hagadorn. Hagadorn says that he made Davey the best in the world...and then proceeded to receive his beating. Edwards came out shortly thereafter where Davey confirmed..."We're cool, Shane's history" (paraphrasing).
Interesting results to say the least. First off, shocked that ROH pulled a TNA by having a pay-per-view level match on free television. Hey, I’m all for giving the fans something memorable, but the first Tyler Black/Christopher Daniels match shouldn’t’ have happen on HDNet. Daniels is currently the biggest name on the roster, and having him face the champion, even in a non-title situation, on free television when they could’ve waited and had them slowly build to a big match just isn’t a money-making move.
Everything else seems about right. Cabana still has problems with Corino because of Generico and Steen. Jerry Lynn wants to take down The All-Night Express; same for Delirious. Strong is picking up much needed wins. Big man brawls end with an empty locker room-which hopefully isn’t a continuing occurrence in the coming weeks. The Embassy continues to lose outside of pre-show matches (which shouldn’t be normal, but unfortunately it is). Eddie Edwards murdered another 10-Minute victim. And Shane Hagadorn got knocked the f-…um, The Wolves got sick of him. Well, actually that’s not normal, is it? Honestly, Hagadorn does nothing for Davey or Eddie as a tweener manager. Hagadorn is a heel through and through, and with Davey and Eddie doing everything on their own, Shane is nothing more than a talking belt rack during matches. I guess they’ll find something for him sooner than later, but I don’t know who they could put him with.
ROH isn’t done as they return to Philly tonight to finish up this set of tapings. Here’s what’s announced for the show so far.
The American Wolves vs. The Super Smash Brothers, ROH World Tag Team Champions The Kings of Wrestling vs. Colt Cabana and El Generico, and Jerry Lynn vs. Kevin Steen are booked for Saturday's tapings.
Good stuff going into tomorrow night, that’s for sure. The last two matches have all the makings of two great main events, if they are just that. The tag match between the champs and Generico & Cabana will have a hard time finding a winner. Think about it; almost every KOW match has ended with The Briscoes interfering if the brothers aren’t involved. And Generico & Cabana can’t get through a match where they’re not across the ring from Steen or Corino that ends with either picking up a victory.
Jerry Lynn and Kevin Steen have the same problem as the aforementioned tag match. Yes, it can be a real good match, but it’ll have a hard time getting a real conclusion with all the variables connected to both men that probably will cause someone getting screwed. Lynn just beat Rhett Titus last night, so you know Titus wants some revenge. This could lead to Steen being disqualified, or Steen stealing a victory off the distraction. On the other side of the coin, Generico’s appearance at ringside has caused Steen to lose in the past; and it could happen again here. Maybe I’m wrong, and we’ll have a match where there’s an actual winner, with no interference.
I truly hope that The Wolves vs. The SSB isn’t just a squash that’s given no time because it could be a real memorable contest. With The SSB in the Tag Wars series, having them actually have a credible match with The Wolves would do wonders in the way everyone looks at their standing in the tournament. Plus, it’s The Wolves. They’re pretty much invincible in the fans’ eyes, and them actually having a back and forth fight wouldn’t hurt their perception in the lest.
Here is the lineup for the July 22nd Bluegrass Brawl event:
* ROH champion Tyler Black vs. ROH Tag Team Champion Claudio Castagnoli in a non-title bout
* The Briscoe Brothers vs. The American Wolves
* Roderick Strong and the House of Truth with Truth Martini vs. Austin Aries, Kenny King, and Rhett Titus
* Chris Hero vs. Colt Cabana
* Sara del Rey vs. Daizee Haze
* Delirious vs. Mike Mondo
* Plus bouts featuring OVW talent
A lot of people have been ragging on this card, stating that for a debuting market, ROH should’ve done better. Well, on one hand, I can agree. This is certainly not one of the strongest cards Ring of Honor has put together this year. On the other hand, the quality of wrestlers on this card, and the way they’ve been placed together should produce a very memorable show. The main event has no real build, or anticipation, but has two of the most athletic and impressive people on the roster. Black isn’t the smallest guy in the company, but Claudio has a great strength and height advantage over the champ. Seeing a David vs. Goliath style match in ROH is a rarity, and Claudio has proven that he does that type of matches very well.
And what about both tag matches. First there’s the six-man tag that is one of the most interesting contests put together for the simple fact that each man isn’t known for keeping the rules. It might be a match where the winning team just out-heels the other. Strong really needs to a win for the simple fact that “ The Book of Truth” has proved no real winning strategy for Strong at all if he doesn’t win with the entire House of Truth by his side. But how can you doubt someone who smokes a pipe like A-Double?
I recently finished watching the first of ROH’s two shows in Phoenix during Wrestlemania weekend (look forward to a review in the near future), and the main event was none other than The Briscoes vs. The Wolves. And I can say right now that if their match in Louisville is half as good as what they did in Phoenix, this show will be worth a viewing on one match alone.
And that leaves a solid undercard involving two matches that involve competitors that know each other all too well (Haze vs. Del Rey and Cabana vs. Hero), and have nothing short of solid contests on any given night. There’s Mike Mondo making his ROH debut. Mondo might have the stench of The Spirit Squad still on him for people who haven’t seen him since his WWE release, but don’t judge him by an old gimmick because Mondo has really turned it up to another level in his in-ring work over the past couple of years. Right behind Johnny Jeter, Mondo was the most talented member of The Squad, in my opinion. He’ll prove why against Who-who is a workhorse himself.
But that’s not the only stop ROH is making next weekend. Ring of Honor returns to Collinsville for another action packed Friday night show. Lets see what they have in store for those Illinois fans.
Collinsville, IL- July 23rd
Generation Me (formerly The Young Bucks) vs. The American Wolves
ROH World Tag Team Champions the Kings of Wrestling/Sara del Rey vs. The Briscoe Brothers/Amazing Kong
ROH World Champion Tyler Black/Jerry Lynn/Delirious with Daizee Haze vs. Austin Aries/Kenny King/Rhett Titus
Necro Butcher with Prince Nana vs. “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown
Kevin Steen vs. El Generico
Pick 6 Contenders Series:(1) Roderick Strong w/Truth Martini vs. Colt “Boom Boom” Cabana
Erick Stevens vs. Grizzly Redwood
I can’t say this any simpler-The American Wolves vs. Generation Me is a Match of the Year candidate on paper alone. The former Young Bucks have been horribly underutilized in TNA (are they even still employed). I can’t wait to hear how this one turns outs.
The first clash between Generico and Steen was built up for six months before it happened. Barely a month later, the rematch is happening. I’m actually surprised they didn’t use this match for the HDNet tapings. I guess the treat is for Collinsville and the DVD purchasing audience because Steen and Generico could top what they did at Death Before Dishonor. ROH hasn’t had many bloodbath brawls in the past years, but 2010 is bringing back memories of ROH’s war with CZW where crazy brawls were the norm. It’s too early for Generico to get his revenge, so Steen should pick up the win again, or neither walks away with a victory due to a near double homicide.
Like Louisville, this event has two tag matches that could prove to be highlights of the evening. The six person tag has all the elements to be as good as good can be for the simple fact of who is involved; and I just don’t mean between the same genders. Kong colliding with Hero could happen. Del Rey confronting Mark or Jay months after taking a Jay Driller could happen. This match might not meet PG standards, that’s for sure.
The other tag match is a rematch from what happened this week on HDNet; and that match was wild enough (more on that later). If the rules are a little relaxed-it is a grudge match-then this contest could turn out to be wilder and more exciting than what happened on Monday.
Brown vs. Butcher in Collinsville will be the litmus test (no TV time constraints) for what could be the big man brawl series that ROH should’ve had a year ago involving Necro. “Skullkrusher” really has a chance to prove he has a tremendous upside, and Ring of Honor has had a reason for making such a big deal over him by hanging with Necro; providing one of the best matches involving both men in their respective ROH tenures. That doesn’t mean they have to give up all their tricks in the first match. But at least give us more than those ridiculously short contests between Butcher and Bison Smith.
No real need to go into details about the other two matches. Even though Redwood got a shocking win over Stevens on HDNet, don’t expect him to keep the streak alive. It’ll be the same type of match they had on HDNet, with a different outcome. As for Strong and Cabana, they should have a good to great match if given the time. It just seems like outside of helping Generico, Cabana’s spinning his wheels while Strong is just getting started with the next phase in his career. So who winning would make more sense?
‘Glory By Honor IX' is officially coming to New York City! As announced yesterday here, September 11, 2010 marks Ring of Honor's return to iPay-Per-View as well with a marquee event at the Manhattan Center! Already announced for this big event is the legendary Terry Funk!
Between Death Before Dishonor and Final Battle, Glory By Honor is the biggest event on the ROH calendar every year. Rarely does it not deliver on big moments or big matches. ROH iPPV has yet to fail on giving the best action for your money. Put two and two together, and Ring of Honor has a chance of topping the absolutely fabulous show they had last month. The question is what can ROH do to out-main event last month’s highly anticipated main event? Really, the only option involves Christopher Daniels. Likely, Tyler Black will be the champion come NYC, so we could see Daniels get that World title shot that his Pick 6 standing has demanded since he returned. Or Daniels could finally have his one on one match with Davey Richards-the man Daniels made his return at the expense of at The Big Bang. Or ROH could pull a Big Bang and have the three top wrestlers in the company take on each other in a Triple Threat match. Maybe take it one step further and make it a Triple Threat Iron man match. Never in ROH has there been a Triple Threat Iron man match in Ring of Honor history, and iPPV would be the best place to do it.
ROH Officials are in the midst of negotiations with high profile talent. Many have called themselves or have been called the "best in the world". Few have actually backed that statement up.
There’s only one man ROH fans have ever wanted back in Ring of Honor for another go-round since he left us craving more. And that man is none other than Konnan. Yes, Konnan shocked the Indy wrestling world with his ROH debut. Many have called it the greatest moment in ROH history. If you don’t believe me, look it up. “The Best in the World” is coming back to ROH, and the only person that fits that moniker is Konnan…and maybe that Bryan Danielson guy. But Danielson can’t measure up to the greatness of Konnan, that’s for sure. If Danielson shows up instead of Konnan, I guarantee that the fans will riot.
In all seriousness, if Danielson does come back for a couple of shows, the only ones that he’ll be able to work are the ones in Richmond, Charlotte, and Plymouth. Every other date, including Glory By Honor IX is already booked for Danielson. If there’s a chance that ROH can lock in Danielson for Richmond, I for one will be greatly appreciative for delivering the only guy from NXT season one better than Wade Barrett.
You know what NXT doesn’t have? A Right or Wrong section. Well, ROH does, and we’re going to find out what was Right or Wrong about this week’s edition of Ring of Honor on HDNet.
ROH on HDNet 7/12/10 Quick Results:
Necro Butcher defeated Bobby Beverly
Eddie Edwards defeated Andy Ridge in a 10-Minute Hunt match
Austin Aries, Rhett Titus, & Kenny King vs. Tyler Black, Jerry Lynn, & Delirious ended in a no-contest
Right:
Butcher’s…Embassy’s Rules: After seeing clips of Necro’s shocking turn to join The Embassy, and being introduced by none other than Prince Nana and Ernesto Osiris, Butcher had the opportunity to unleash his new form of havoc on ROH, brought to you by The Embassy. This was a typical squash, but a different Necro. Over the past couple of years, Necro has become too human, and likable. Here, the Necro of old came out to play, showing that bloodthirsty side we haven’t seen for far too long. This is the Necro that doesn’t just enjoy a fight, but also wants to maim and cripple his opponents. He came close to doing that against Beverly with a series of slams on the chair; including a chokeslam, a tiger driver, and the dreaded sidewalk slam across the backs of two chairs. This is the Necro ROH’s needed for a while, and his clash with Skullkrusher Rasche Brown could be the big man brawl Necro and Bison Smith could’ve, and should’ve been.
The Hunt Never Ends:ROH TV champion Eddie Edwards gave another willing soul the chance to go ten minutes with him in hopes of gaining a future TV title shot. This week’s vict-…um, challenger was none other than the man with the powerful right leg, Andy Ridge. And that leg came to play as Ridge used it to knock Edwards off his game for a couple of moments. Unfortunately for Ridge, Eddie quickly found out Ridge’s left leg isn’t as strong as his right because Edwards hooked that leg several times before making Ridge tap in the Achilles Lock. Once again, Edwards looked like a beast, and the hope that something great coming at the end of the 10-Minute Hunt is still there because Eddie fails in not delivering.
Strong Finds The Truth: A little beyond the midway point of the show saw Jim Cornette conduct an in-ring sit-down in hopes of clearing the air between the two. Strong wanted no parts in forgiving Cornette for what Strong believed was a screw job of preventing him from becoming the ROH World champion. Strong expressed that him being held back in Ring of Honor isn’t the only case of prejudice occurring in the company. Strong introduced us to the House of Truth (Josh Raymond, Christian Able, Truth Martini); men he felt one with in this failed pursuit of greatness in ROH. Truth took the mic, explaining that Strong had gone through a life-changing intervention that made Strong open his eyes to the truth. According to Martini, through his guidance, Roderick Strong will finally achieve the ROH World title, and people like Cornette, Austin Aries, and Tyler Black won’t be able to stop him, or screw him over any longer. If there’s one thing Roderick’s needed help in is his ability to talk. Strong is leaps and bounds better than he was years ago, but he wouldn’t be able to talk people into the building to save his life. Martini is a natural talker who can express what Strong hasn’t been capable of over the years. Overall, Strong hasn’t looked this strong in years (pun intended), and it’s thanks to Truth Martini.
Pier Six Brawl: ROH World champion Tyler Black teamed up with Jerry Lynn and Delirious to take on a group of men he’s had just as much problems with in the past as his partners-Austin Aries, Kenny King, and Rhett Titus. The match started off pretty wild with all six men going at each other when the Black-led crew hit the ring. When things finally settled down, Aries and his boys took the fight to Jerry Lynn, then Delirious. After over minutes, Delirious had to rely on Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn to pick up the slack due to Aries, King, and Titus beating him down. Lynn and Black did a good job in taking the fight to his opponents. The action spilled to the floor after Delirious and Lynn began to dive off the top rope. The referee had no choice but to call the match off due to his inability to regain any semblance of order. As Tyler Black stood dumbfounded, Kevin Steen entered the ring to use the Package Piledrive on the champ. Expectations for this match were understandably high, but all six men really did their best to turn it up a notch and deliver one of the best main events on ROH TV since the TV title tournament finals. Plus, the closing moments played off of Black saving Generico’s butt just a couple of weeks ago while adding some much needed heat to next weekend’s Chicago main event between Steen and Black.
Wrong: None
Overall: One of the better shows in a while from Ring of Honor on HDNet. Tonight’s episode was a perfect mix of promo videos and in-ring action. The main event-as I said earlier-was one of the best of the year from ROH on TV. The 10-Minute Hunt gives the great possibility that when it’s over, it’ll pay off big for Eddie and his opponent. And don’t forget about brutal Necro. Brutal Necro is a fun Necro. Well, for me, maybe not the people he’s in the ring with. This is definitely an episode worth seeing.
Okay, lets call it a Report. Hope you have a great weekend, and are able to enjoy it to the fullest.
Till Then.
