6/28/10: Ring of Honor had a memorable, and not very PG, evening in Toronto with Death Before Dishonor VIII. And you can see it again on Gofightlive.tv. But tonight, the World champion is in action when he takes on El Generico in a non-title contest.
Kevin Steen w/Steve Corino vs. Bobby Shields
Before Steen could be introduced, he entered the building to introduce himself. After explaining his disdain for the announcers on HDNet, Steen decided to give Hogewood and Prazak the match off so he and Steve Corino could do color commentary.
Steen jumped Shields from behind off the Corino distraction. Corino and Steen-both with microphones-mocked Bobby for being the type of guy they’d beat up in school. Seriously, Corino was beating up people in school when he looked like the towel boy back when he started in ECW? Corino proclaimed the somersault leg drop as, “orgasmic.” Showing he was too sexy for his shirt, Steen unveiled his glistering body after telling the women in attendance, “Stay seated.” Steen followed by telling some heckling child, “I’m your father, kid!” Brilliant. Steen took too much time getting advice from fellow commentator Steve Corino, allowing Shields to roll him of for two seconds. Steen lost his microphone while taking a barrage of punches, causing Corino to bellow in disappointment. Steen turned Shields’ hurricarana attempt into a power bomb, causing Corino to scream, “Slap the porcupine!” Steen finished the poor guy off with a crossface that saw Steen force Bobby to hold the microphone by trapping his arm so Steen could talk. For some reason, Corino announced Steen as the winner, “by pin fall!” Corino and Steen give us a smooth exit to a commercial break.
Kyle Durden was in the back to talk about Necro Butcher’s neck injury suffered at the “Pick Your Poison” event. Even though he’s not medically clear, Necro promises to be here tonight to show The Embassy something they’ve never seen before.
Erick Stevens w/The Embassy vs. Necro Butcher
Butcher comes out wearing shoes. Oh, this can’t be good. Necro grabs a microphone to explain that his neck injury, and lack of insurance, is too much for him to wrestle tonight. Butcher apologizes for not being able to wrestle tonight, but he has a suitable replacement. Which leads to…
Erick Stevens w/The Embassy vs. Grizzly Redwood
Redwood was throwing rights and lefts, actually pushing Stevens into the corner as Nana berated him on the microphone. Is this “Bring Your Own Microphone To Work” day? After sidestepping the charging Stevens, Redwood sent The Embassy member tumbling to the floor. Stevens caught Redwood in midair when Grizzly flew through the ropes. Stevens tossed Grizzly abdomen first into the steel ring post like he was nothing. Stevens was enjoying the pain being inflicted on little Redwood. Even Nana and Osiris got in on the action. Redwood tried to punch his way off the mat, but that didn’t work either. Redwood avoided the choo-choo rush, connecting with a few forearms. Springboard hurricarana downed Stevens to a huge response. Redwood connected with the tornado DDT, but only gained a near fall. The fans were behind Redwood as he scaled the ropes. Erick caught Redwood, German suplexing him into the choo-choo rush. Instead of ending the match after two lariats, Stevens conversed with Nana. Redwood took advantage of the situation, cradling Stevens for a shocking upset.
The Embassy beat Redwood down until Skullkrusher Rasche Brown slid into the ring. Stevens felt the power of the chokeslam at the hands of Skullkrusher. Nana tried to jump Brown from behind, but it didn’t hurt the big man. Stevens saved Nana from being chokeslammed with a kick to Brown’s lower region. Osiris and Nana tied Brown in the corner before Nana introduced the new crown jewel of The Embassy…Necro Butcher! Butcher walked down the aisle in a suit and Jimmy Rave’s old robe. Osiris followed the orders of Butcher, setting up two chairs back to back. Necro pulled out a piece of plywood with Rasche’s name written on it. Necro wound back, cracking Brown into unconsciousness. Before Necro could use the backbreaker across the chairs on Redwood, several referees saved the little lumberjack.
We get a recap of the events that occurred at Death Before Dishonor VIII, including the classic World title defense of Tyler Black against Davey Richards.
Up In Smoke vs. Josh Raymond & Christian Able
Able and Cloudy start off with Able easily powering Cloudy around the ring before tagging out. Raymond used his wrestling skills to keep Cloudy grounded. Able distracted Cloudy and the ref by feigning an entering the ring, allowing Raymond to club Cloudy from behind. Cloudy recovered, head scissoring Raymond face first into the corner. Nice double team combination from the former Special K members that ended with Able and Raymond stuck in a double submission. Cloudy lost his momentum when Able and Raymond grabbed Cloudy by his feet, pulling him out of the ring to slam him back first across the thinly padded floor. Cloudy was stuck on the wrong side of the ring as Raymond and Able used quick tags and a couple of strikes apiece to keep Cloudy reeling. Able tried to help Raymond super bomb Cloudy, but ended up getting super hurricarana. Cheech finally tags in, rocking Raymond before using a tope on Able. Raymond avoided the hilo by Cheech, but not the plancha when both opponents went to the outside. Before Cheech could follow up, Able grabbed Cheech, hooking him in position for Raymond’s lionsault. Cloudy saved his partner, helping him rid the ring of Able before hitting Partly Cloudy With A Chance of Cheech. Able reentered, turning Cloudy’s head scissors against him by tossing Cloudy head first into the top turnbuckle. Able distracted the referee to avoid his partner from being pinned by Cheech. Able hoisted Cheech into the air, allowing Raymond to come off the top rope, driving both of his knees into the back of his head. Able made the cover, picking up the win for his team.
Jon Davis and Kory Chavis-Dark City Fight Club-speak on their team that is nothing but brutality and violence. Davis credits Chavis for being the brains behind the team. Davis puts over the Tag Team champions, Hero and Castagnoli, and promise not to be pulled into Hero’s mind games, and avoid Castagnoli’s strength when they take on the Kings of Wrestling next week.
Two weeks ago, Christopher Daniels put Tyler Black and Davey Richards on notice that he’s going to become the absolute best in Ring of Honor. Next week, Daniels teams up with Roderick Strong to take on The American Wolves.
ROH World champion Tyler Black vs. El Generico
Code of Honor is followed as the “Ole,” chants ring out. Both men jockeyed for an advantage on the mat, leading to a stand off when neither could get that advantage. Generico pushed Black off the ropes, causing the pace to pick up until Black caught Generico in a snap mare, followed by a kick to the masked man’s back. Black connected with that leaping stomp to Generico’s masked face, causing Generico to scurry under the ropes. When Generico returned, he used a few arm drags to set up the leg lariat. Instead of going for the pin, Generico posed. Black started a fistfight in the ring’s middle, using it to hip toss Generico across the ring. Generico took a couple of back elbows and a clothesline, but refused to stay down. Back flip into the dropkick by the champ only got him a two count. Generico took every strike Black was throwing, using a few of his own before dumping Black to the floor. Black couldn’t move in time to avoid the somersault plancha. Generico used the cross body from the top to get a near fall. Black flipped out of the belly to back suplex attempt, cradling Generico. After Generico kicked out-before he could make it off the mat-Black threw a kick at Generico’s head that rocked “The Generic Luchador”.
Black found Generico in the corner, so he unleashed that stomping flying forearm. Black hit the ropes as Generico stumbled out of the corner, running into a Michinoku driver. Black valiantly kicked out, but Generico stayed on top of him. Black took a yakuza kick, responding with an enzuguri. “This is awesome,” ran through the arena as Black went counter for counter until Black hit Paroxysm. Generico somehow got his shoulder off the mat before the three count. Generico was hung in the tree of woe, allowing Black to use Low Ki’s old double stomp out of the corner. Thankfully for Generico, he was close enough to the ropes to save himself. Black pulled Generico to the center of the ring, scaling the ropes for the Phoenix Splash. Generico rolled out of the way, but Black landed on his feet. Black turned around, rushing Generico. El Generico caught Black, suplexing him into the turnbuckles back first. Black was stuck in the corner, open for the somersault coast to coast dropkick. Black showed the heart of a champion by kicking out before the three count. Generico was about to use the yakuza kick in the corner when Kevin Steen came to the ring, splitting Generico in half with the steel ring post. Steen stomped on Generico’s hurting body, only to turn into Black’s super kick. Steen fell out of the ring as Black stood tall.
