The ROHbot Report: Thoughts On Jimmy Jacobs vs. Austin Aries, Final Cards For This Weekend's Shows, and an ROH Toolbar?
By James Bullock
You must have clicked on this link for one reason, and that is to get your Ring of Honor news fix. I'm here once again with the ROHbot Report, giving you all the need to know about the ROH happenings. Everything in italics is the news/headlines provided by rohwrestling.com (unless otherwise noted). As most of you know, this weekend is a huge double shot for the company. Lets look at the cards.
The main event will be one of the most important matches of the year. Not only in ROH, but also in the wrestling world as the ROH World champion takes on the NWA World champion in a match for title supremacy (hence the name of the show). Most title vs. title, interpromotional matches end in draws or double count-outs/dqs. And I see it happening this time around as well. McGuinness hasn’t suffered a serious loss since winning the ROH title, and I really doubt the NWA board would want their star to be beaten even though he’s not seen anywhere near the level of Nigel in ROH. It should be an interesting contest for sure. Another ROH shaping match will be the tag team challenge. Steenerico’s chances of winning tag gold are getting better as it seems ROH is building to an epic title confrontation between Steenerico and Jacobs & Black. Possibly at the next pay-per-view taping? But as Dayton sees a company fight for supremacy, we’re going to witness a vendetta be settled in Chicago the next night.
ROH is planning on doing a whole lot of traveling this year, making 2008 one of the most traveled years the company has ever experienced.
The Toronto match seems to be the foundation for a memorable weekend that includes Lance Storm’s return, and a pay-per-view taping. But the biggest news is ROH going up north (a double shot in November in Montreal and Toronto has also been announced. Seemingly more than 36 tickets have been sold for the 7/25 show to warrant ROH already announcing a return), then across the pacific. As I said in the last Report, I was thoroughly pleased with ROH’s Japanese debut, with several great matches rounding out an incredible double shot. The crowd was so instrumental in the electric atmosphere, and the behind the scenes footage of the wrestlers traveling around Tokyo was one of a kind (this was before TNA’s Global Impact). I hope ROH does something similar this time around. Another piece of news is ROH’s negotiations with Mexico’s AAA organization. With stars like Cibernetico, I would love to see a talent exchange between the two companies. As we’ve seen from the success and rave reviews of Lucha based company CHIKARA, Indy fans are ready to see some genuine Lucha without having to stay up till 1a.m. watching Telemundo. As long as Judas Mesias doesn’t show up, I think this could be a very profitable relationship for both sides.
Wow, I don’t know what to think. That’s pretty advance for any wrestling company. Even WWE hasn’t thought about that. Hey, ROH, this is your chance to work hand and hand with the ROHbot Report. Hit me back when you want to work a deal. All rights are retained by worldwrestlinginsanity.com though. I know where my bread is buttered.
You want to talk about big matches; it doesn’t get any bigger than this in tag team wrestling with Steenerico taking on MCMG in NYC. DBD has always been one of the biggest shows of the year for ROH since it’s inception in 2003 (which I’ve done a DVD review for that’s exclusively on WWI.com), and this year’s seems to be no different.
Oh, you thought ROH was done? Think again.
Okay, maybe they appreciate the kind words, but they don’t have to make fun of his English. Come on, the man has to fight to hold Jerry Lawler back from entering the ring every time Melina does a split. In all seriousness, Ross has been a serious advocate for the company, and I hope that some ROH stars get a shot at the big time through Ross’ ringing endorsements. I wonder if J.R. ever fought for a woman, only to lose her to another man? Probably. But has J.R. ever worn black fingernail polish while suffering that loss? I highly doubt it, but Jimmy Jacobs has.
From January 2006 until May 2007, Jimmy Jacobs was the poster boy for anyone who’s fought for a woman, only to have her reject you. For every guy who witnessed his heart be broken by a girl he liked because he wasn’t good enough, or he wasn’t her type. Jimmy was like looking in a mirror. Jacobs was one of us. In May 2007, Jacobs got the chance that a lot of us never get: he got the girl of his dreams. And instead of cherishing it, instead of being happy, instead of thanking the heavens that Lacey’s heart had finally been won, Jimmy went totally opposite of what a normal man would’ve done. Jimmy proclaimed Lacey’s love as nothing. Her love wasn’t the saving grace that he was looking for. The redeemable quality that made it worth his blood, sweat, chipped teeth, and torn ACL. Jimmy saw that the people related to him, and he wanted to lead them to a new era. Jacobs, with the girl still by his side, changed to become the man he thought the people wanted him to be. The leader they wanted Jimmy to be. After collecting his band of brothers and sisters, Jimmy focused on one man that had been facing the same frustrations and anger Jacobs suffered during his wars with Colt Cabana and BJ Whitmer.
Austin Aries, who made his ROH return from TNA-land, dropped the Jesse Ventura-lite gimmick in hopes of becoming the first ever two-time ROH World champion. But unsuccessful in several attempts, Aries was becoming disgruntled. Jacobs sent his troops (all except Necro, for obvious reasons) to persuade Aries into joining the Age of the Fall. Aries refused, but Jacobs didn’t want Austin slip away from his movement. Then the girl stepped up. Jacobs’ girl, Jacobs’ former reason for living stepped up for her leader to bring Aries into the fold. At the Supercard of Honor 3 event, we saw Austin walk out with Lacey in Lacey’s attempt to persuade Aries into AOTF. And in that moment of Lacey walking off with Aries, you could see Jacobs revert.
You see, Jacobs, no matter what he believes, no matter what he says, is still that little lovesick puppy that gave his body in hopes of winning Lacey’s heart. Jacobs got sick of following Lacey to be her man. And instead of walking side by side with her when he finally got the girl, he put her in the background. Subconsciously, Jimmy wanted to make Lacey feel he same inferiority that he felt in her personal life (before she decided he was the one for her) in his social movement known as the Age of the Fall. In the end, all Jimmy did was push his woman (the girl he nearly broke his neck for several times in some dangerous matches with BJ and Cabana) into the arms of another man.
Since then, Jimmy has gotten rid of Lacey, possibly kidnapping her a la the Saw movies. Jimmy has gotten his crew to assault and embarrass Aries. Jacobs has done, and will do, everything in his power to make Aries’ life hell. But the only person to blame is Jacobs himself. Even with the fancy speeches, and the clueless followers, Jacobs is still a little lovesick boy not able to understand that he’s the man in the wrong. Jacobs is still unable to put the pieces together to blame himself for Lacey leaving him. Until Jacobs can understand that he’s at fault for Lacey’s departure, nothing he does to Aries can ease the pain. And that brings us to 6/28, where Aries and Jacobs finally meet in a one on one match. Like many of us watching Jacobs fight for Lacey for over a year as a mirror into our own lives, come Chicago, Jacobs will be looking across the ring at a mirror of himself from over a year ago. The fire that Jacobs had when he was fighting to defend Lacey’s honor is now raging in Austin Aries. We saw what Jacobs put himself, and his opponents, through to let that fire grow. Jacobs better resolve this thing fast before a broken heart is least of his worries getting engulfed in that fire.
