Hey all, welcome to another edition of The ROHbot Report. We have a lot to cover, including results from Chicago and Boston, as well as a preview for tonight’s huge Glory By Honor VIII event. So lets get started.

Chicago, IL

9/19/09

Pre-Show

--A long line for Bret Hart
--At least 400 people in the arena.
--Return date is December 5th

a. Brody Heffer d. Titan "somebody": Said the crowd didn't like the finish because Titan was a "homeboy"...I'm going to assume he meant from Chicago.
b. Andy "Right Leg" Ridge & Tony Kozina d. Bravado Brothers

Main Show Results

1. Petey Williams d. Rhett Titus
2. “Skullkrusher” Rasche Brown d. Silas Young, Sal Rinauro, “Sugarfoot” Alex Payne, Alex O'Rielly, & Grizzly Redwood in a Six Man Mayhem Match
-Nigel McGuinness is out to cut a promo. Good reaction from the crowd. He talks about the good times he's had.
3. Brent Albright & Bobby Dempsey d. The House of Truth: Crowd apparently loved it
4. Necro Butcher d. Jimmy Rave in a Dog Collar Match. Ended with a "crazy submission with the chain around Rave's face"
-After intermission, Bret Hart came out and cut a promo putting over ROH. Good reception from the crowd.
5. Young Bucks d. Dark City Fight Club
6. Colt Cabana d. Claudio Castagnoli - with a low blow. Crowd was way into it.
The Briscoes vs. American Wolves match is now a Tag Team Title Match!
7. The Briscoe Brothers d. The American Wolves by Disqualification: Davey Richards hit a top rope leg drop on ref Paul Turner to cause the DQ. Wolves retain the titles.
8. Austin Aries d. Bryan Danielson by submission. He retains the ROH World Title.

From the sounds of it, the fans of Chicago brought that high energy they’re known for to make even the most average of shows into memorable ones. I talked about The Young Bucks beating Dark City may be a precursor of the future in regards to the Tag Team championship. It’d be very interesting that of all the teams they’ve faced thus far, the DCFC might finally have found a team that has their number, possibly leading to the best tag team feud since…well, since The American Wolves versus Steenerico. Maybe even better than The Briscoes and Steenerico. Speaking of The Briscoes, their disqualification win over The Wolves makes me wonder if ROH is getting ready for a feud between the two teams over the belts. Or maybe they’re ready to give us the inevitable triple threat match involving The Briscoes, The Wolves, and Steenerico. Ladder War 2 should really give us a great idea of where ROH is going when it comes to their tag division.

Well, I guess my hopes of Danielson winning the gold on his way out is officially null & void. I have no problems with Aries keeping the title, or having Bryan put him over on his way out. I just wanted something really unexpected to happen before The Final Countdown Tour ended. But with Petey Williams and Kenny Omega waiting to step up and face A-Double, I can’t blame ROH for not changing their plans for this little ROHbot.

Must say the turn out number is a little depressing. It used to be a time when Chicago events would easily pull double the people that came here. As I said last week, I have to wonder if ROH has driven away its loyal fans with its booking changes over the past year, and the leaving of big stars like Danielson and McGuinness, or if it’s the economy. I understand that it’s hard for any form of entertainment to do financially what it was a few years ago, but seeing a huge drop in attendance on so many consecutive shows worries this ROHbot.

Well, that’s only the first half of results for Ring of Honor’s most recent shows. Lets see how Boston turned out last night.

Boston, MA

9/25/09

1. The Young Bucks d. Up In Smoke - Bucks win with More Bang for Your Buck. Was a good, competitive match.
2. Delirious d. Sonjay Dutt - After the match, Sonjay kissed Daizee Haze. She slapped him, and Sonjay put Daizee in the Camel Clutch!
3. Claudio Castagnoli d. Petey Williams, Chris Hero, & El Generico in a Four Corner Survival - Claudio pinned Petey Williams with the Ricola Bomb. Match was said to be all action, and Hero and Claudio did work together on occasion.
4. Kevin Steen d. Eddie Edwards in an Anything Goes Match - Steen wins with a Package Piledriver through 4 chairs.
-Attendance appears to be in the 550 range.
5. Dark City Fight Club d. Alex Payne & Bobby Dempsey
6. Roderick Strong d. Nigel McGuinness - Strong wins after two Gibson Drivers.
7. Austin Aries & Rhett Titus d. Colt Cabana & Kenny Omega - Colt had the Billy Goat's Curse on, Aries kicked him low, and then kicked him in the head, allowing Rhett to pin Cabana.
8. Davey Richards d. Bryan Danielson - Davey wins with the kimura, after hitting the shooting star press as well. "Match of the year" chant afterwards, said to be an incredible match!

From the sounds of it, this could be the best Boston show to date, maybe even better than Driven 2008 (the awesomeness of Dutt probably put it over the bar). First thing that surprised me was Claudio pinning Petey. I know Claudio can’t lose all the time, but it’s been put into motion that Williams and Aries are posed to clash for the World title. Why not let the guy keep his momentum after those tag wins over the champion? Then, I might be wrong about Williams. Maybe Cabana will take his place as next in line. I know the next night will be Cabana and Titus one on one, but I wonder if Cabana is getting ready for, not only a title chase, but also his final chase (more on that later). As much as I love seeing Davey win, I just hoped Danielson would get one win during his final matches. It’s nice to see him putting people over, but come on. Would it hurt anyone for Danielson to win one match (including his match tomorrow night)? I do like that the winning of Danielson vs. McGuinness is pretty unpredictable because both men lost here. But that’s not the only thing to be excited about when talking about Glory By Honor VIII. Want to know what’s happening? I have it all below.

September 26th in New York City:
* Ladder War II: ROH Tag Team champs The American Wolves vs. Kevin Steen & El Generico
* Nigel McGuinness vs. Bryan Danielson
* Austin Aries WILL defend the ROH World Title
* Jay & Mark Briscoe vs. The Young Bucks
* Eddie Kingston vs. Chris Hero
* Claudio Castagnoli vs. Kenny Omega
* Colt Cabana vs. Rhett Titus
* The Dark City Fight Club vs. Cheech & Cloudy
* Also scheduled to appear are Roderick Strong, Sonjay Dutt, Petey Williams and Delirious.

This has to be one of the most stacked cards in recent memory. Definitely the best-looking card of the year thus far. While it appears Ladder War will go on last, I hope ROH doesn’t go that route. Danielson and Nigel deserve every bit of the evening’s final spotlight. I know I did a little reflection last week, but as the night nears, I can’t help but realize that these two men really helped me fall in love with the art of pro-wrestling again. Even though ROH had a banner year in 2006, lack of funds didn’t allow me to enjoy it to the utmost until almost the end of it. Even though I was following the happenings, I couldn’t help be feel a little burned out on wrestling. Then Unified came along, featuring the two men taking their exit tonight, and I just forgot everything that made me want to give up on the physical form of entertainment I loved so much. They followed up on that classic from England with amazing match after incredible match after match of the year candidates. Looking back, so many wrestlers have become synonymous with each other, and for good reason. Ric Flair/Ricky Steamboat, Bret Hart/Shawn Michaels, Steve Austin/The Rock, so on and so forth. I gladly say that these two men shouldn’t only be synonymous with each other, but also with excellent wrestling.

While we won’t have the stunner of Danielson winning the ROH World title before the night’s over, we could still have some shocking turn of events. How about The Bucks beat The Briscoes in their third shot against the fellow brother tandem? What about Kenny Omega getting some momentum for his inevitable showdown with Aries by having him pin Claudio? Maybe give Cheech & Cloudy a win here? Okay, scratch the last one. What I mean is that ROH has a chance to turn in a very memorable, unpredictable, and unforgettable event. All the ingredients are there for something special. I just hope nothing goes wrong to hurt, what should be, the best night of ROH action in 2009 so far.

Signed for October 10th for ROH's return to Indianapolis is singles action. "That Young Knockout Kid" Chris Hero has had a 2009 to remember, and it only got better when he defeated Bryan Danielson last Friday in Dayton. Now he'll face a man that was right in the thick of things before his Japan tour – Kenny Omega!

Omega and Hero are in two very similar, but unique positions. Chris Hero, seemingly, is on the verge of breaking through to the top of the card finally. His dedication to truly become “TYKOK” has been nothing short of exemplary, and I look forward to anything he does now more than before (and I always looked forward to Hero in action). Then there’s Omega, who is also on the verge of doing something big in ROH, even though he hasn’t been around for a full year yet. When I talked about ROH shaking things up in the World title picture, I put an emphasis on Omega either being the man to end up with the World title by Final Battle, or have him take Aries to the limit like Aries did Danielson so many years ago. Both men have bright futures in Ring of Honor, and like The Bucks and the DCFC, this could be the beginning of big things in for both men. Who knows, they might become synonymous with each other before it’s all said and done.

More of the best tag team wrestling in the world is signed for October 9th in suburban St. Louis. The House of Truth may have fallen in both of their matches last weekend, but they once again did not fail to impress. In fact, one tag team was very impressed and has signed to face the HoT to see if they're for real. It's the Briscoe Brothers versus the House of Truth in Collinsville!

It seems The House is the real deal, getting more and more bookings to be a part for a good sized Tag Team division. Take it one step further, and you see that not only are The House earning their spots on the roster full-time, they’re also getting a chance to shine with some of the very best tag teams in the U.S. If they can have a great match with The Briscoes, which shouldn’t be too hard, I’ve got the feeling we’ll be seeing more of The House for a long time.

Colt Cabana got a huge reaction at last night's TNA Impact tapings. He worked against Puma in a dark match. At this time, there is no word on what TNA management thought of his performance. [Credit: Pwinsider.com]
Ring of Honor management knew of Cabana's try out with TNA in advance. [Credit: Pwinsider.com]
Samoa Joe is trying to drum up support on his TWITTER for the company to sign Cabana to a deal.

I said earlier I was a little worried about the financial status of Ring of Honor. And this just adds to those worries. While Colt Cabana is no Bryan Danielson or Nigel McGuinness when it comes to groundbreaking importance, but he’s one of the more valuable proponents of the roster. I really like Cabana. I felt he wasn’t used at all properly in WWE. There can be an intense discussion that TNA might or might not treat him better than WWE. I highly doubt TNA would do any better with Colt compared to ROH. TNA can barely do well with the majority of their roster under the age of 35. I doubt his leaving after such a short return-he just came back at the Seventh Anniversary Show-would hurt ROH much. Outside of winning the ROH World title, nothing much is left for Cabana to do outside of random feuds. But random feuds are better than being jobbed out to Eric Young. I’d just hate to see him misused again.

Once upon a time, TNA and ROH got along. Both used the other’s wrestlers on a frequent basis, and all was right with the wrestling world. I think we all know what happened after that. Now ROH is really in the position TNA was at when everything was good between the two companies. And like TNA, ROH has TV. You know what that means…

ROH on HDNet 09.21.09 QUICK RESULTS

:

Austin Aries defeated Grizzly Redwood to successfully defend the ROH World title

Erick Stevens defeated Brandon Day

Necro Butcher defeated Jimmy Rave

Roderick Strong, KENTA, & Bryan Danielson defeated The American Wolves & Chris Hero

Right:

A-Double, L-Double: This week’s show kicked off with the first Austin Aries Lucky Lottery on HDNet. The winner of the random drawing got a shot at Aries’ World title. They faked a Kenny Omega/Austin Aries showdown, which gives me hope that they want to elevate Omega by putting him in the ring Aries in a big match situation. But the key word is “faked”, because Omega wasn’t there. The real winner…Grizzly Redwood! To a certain extent, I can understand why people would think this is counterproductive, as no one believed Redwood was a threat, even though he’s been involved in one of the biggest feuds running in Ring of Honor right now. In the end, Redwood was squashed, but didn’t look like a complete jobber. Redwood got all his stuff in, including the chopping down the trees (legs). Aries got another title defense. And we’re promised to see more opportunities handpicked by the champ. If this whole thing is used properly, Aries could help push a new face to the top of the card.

Necro Butcher vs. Jimmy Rave: I must say that even though this wasn’t a classic by any means, everything made sense. On the floor, Necro is one of the most dangerous men in ROH, which was seen in the opening minutes. Jimmy Rave can take a horrible beating, and mount a comeback with some help, which was seen when the action finally made it to the ring. Necro has a never say die attitude, which was seen after Rave, Nana, and Osiris almost snapped Butcher’s ankle, but he wouldn’t tap out in the Heel Hook. And Bison Smith should be save his people when he’s sitting in the back, which happened when Necro got a hold of a staple gun. The final action is what made me happiest because I noted last week that Bison should’ve run in to save Joey Ryan from losing to Colt Cabana, especially since Bison just finished a match. Sensible booking can make an average match/situation, and turn it in to a highlight/right.

You Want Glory: Last week, ROH made sure that any fans thinking about making the drive to NYC for Glory By Honor VIII be assured that it’d be worth the trip because of Ladder War 2. This week, The American Wolves reinforced what we all expect to see in Ladder War: big bumps, bloodshed, and lack of actual wrestling. But that’s not the only focus given to GBH. ROH made up for Eddie Kingston and Chris Hero I in ROH not happening on HDNet by putting over how violent the feud has been, and how memorable the match will be in NYC. Since the show is reportedly sold-out, I’m assuming that if the show lives up to the hype, this might be one of the highest bought DVDs in ROH history. And HDNet might be helpful for the DVD reaching that status.

KENTA, Bryan Danielson, & Roderick Strong vs. The American Wolves & Chris Hero: Just seeing the names involved, I knew this match would be nothing short of incredible. I really don’t need to go into details or play-by-play (which you can read on the show report), but I can say that it was easily one of the best main events in ROH TV history, and that’s saying something. It’s hard to even describe how much fun I had watching this match. The big moves, near falls, Super KENTA, just everything was off the charts amazing. The only thing that made me do a double take was Roderick winning. Strong isn’t doing anything in the Tag division, so why would they have him pin one-half of the Tag Team champions. Maybe they just felt Strong needed a win, which is never a bad thing because Roderick deserves it. But with The Wolves are about to take on their greatest rivals in the most dangerous match in ROH history, why not have them go over? Thankfully those questions didn’t pop up until I had finished soaking in the best match of the week.

Wrong:

Erick Stevens vs. Brandon Day: Like Strong, Stevens getting a few wins for no apparent reason isn’t going to hurt him. But at least Strong beat someone high on the totem poll. Stevens just beat another jobber. And that’s all Stevens does in singles competition. I’ve been waiting for a long time to see Stevens in a real feud. And right now, I’m not seeing that happening. If they really want the people to care about “The runaway freight train”, they need to get him in there with someone that we know he’s not going to kill in two minutes.

Overall: Once again, ROH used its formula effectively with a couple of short, but solid matches, followed by an incredible main event. This week was a little better because one of those matches involved ROH’s most charismatic star, and ROH World champion, Austin Aries. As I said earlier, the A-Double L-Double can make a star if used correctly, and this show might be the first step toward that. The main event was indescribably good, and I hope every ROHbot sees it at least once. Good opening, great main event, recommended show.

Lets call it a week, ROHbots. If you don’t know already, you can show your support of The ROHbot Report by joining the Facebook group ( http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=135858249616 ). And if you’re going to the Manhattan Center tonight for the show, have a wonderful time. I have a great feeling that this will be ROH’s show of the year.

Till Then.
