WWE SuperStars SuperReview: Jillian vs. Gail, Yoshi vs. Caylen, Finlay vs. Knox, and Masters vs. The Marine II
So Monday night is in the history books and we come out the other end knowing that Bret Hart vs. Vince McMahon will continue while Hulk Hogan's influence may/may not change much within TNA. One thing is for sure, running what is effectively an N.W.O angle as one of the companies main focal points won't do a damn bit of good in the long run and may actually damage established TNA members like AJ Styles and Samoa Joe. I guess, like most things, only time will tell!
However, it is time for yet another WWE Superstars SuperReview here at World Wrestling Insanity.com! Let's get stuck in!
Battle #1 – Jillian Hall vs. Gail Kim
This opening bout is a continuation of the WWE Divas Championship tournament which kick-started this past Monday on RAW. Melina was injured during house show action last weekend and therefore had to vacate the title. Maryse was victorious over Brie Bella (even though she pinned Nikki..I think) and therefore the winner of tonight's 1st round match will square off against the French-Canadian beauty..I think! I have no idea if this is just a regular tournament or if the matches will run at random to be honest! Hopefully it all makes sense come the end!
Jillian “treats us” to her version of a Black Eyed Pea's song as the crowd cringe and boo her out of the building. I've always been a fan of Jillian, even dating back to her days as an obscene facial foetus-donning manager (I have never described someone in such a way, even in the wacky world of wrestling!).
Hey, this was a pretty decent match-up and I feel the women's league can only become more interesting with matches like this one. Hall played the smiling heel to perfection, even at one point counting along with the referee's DQ 5-count before breaking at 4 while Kim scored the popular victory with a flexible roll-up for the 1..2..3! Perhaps this will really be the beginning for Gail in WWE as whereas she was a Women's Champion the first time around, she has never really made all that big an impact on the federation. Time to develop a character and we're all systems go for this supremely talented female.
WINNER: Gail Kim
Battle #2 – Ted DiBiase vs. Chris Masters
DiBiase actually gets a pretty sizeable pop on his way down to the ring and this is indicative of the fans sensing a change from heel to face in the coming months. It's well documented on the internet but maybe, just maybe Teddy boy is popular enough with those who don't really take much to do with the internet wrestling fan base to command this change in alignment. He is certainly accomplished between the ropes and has proved he is comfortable on the mic, something which will only improve given time and chances to talk.
Masters himself garnered a pretty favourable reaction from the WWE “universe” and this is further proof that WWE are going in the right direction with the dude, finally. I hope he gets over as whereas I've never been a HUGE fan of the guy's work, I like seeing people catch a break. He's also been impressing me with those dancing muscles, I might get in line behind Eve Torres..
Speaking of Eve, Michael Cole yet again referenced the fact she was sitting at his side of the announce desk whilst cheering on her man. Hopefully this will not be turned into some kind of angle which sees Cole don a leotard and stand there beating his chest while challenging “The Masterpiece” to a “Dancing Muscle Match” at Wrestlemania. (World Wrestling Insanity.com and James Guttman are not responsible for any mental scarring this particular writer has caused. Jamie Kennedy's highly horrible feelings are not representative of WWI.com's own in any way. World Wrestling Insanity loves you and hopes you had a fantastic New Years).
Both men were damn over with the audience, which was really cool to see. If this was a little test for DiBiase to see how he could hack a singles career, he passed. Masters himself also passed a little exam here by sticking one middle finger up at all those who say he cannot work. Good match, correct result. DiBiase evaded the dreaded “Masterlock” a number of times before nailing his opponent with a suitably meaty-looking “Dream Street” for the victory. Man I can't wait for this guy to turn on Orton and have a program with him.
WINNER: Ted DiBiase
Meanwhile, In Wrestling History..

We take a look back at the Survivor Series 1997 and the infamous “Montreal Screwjob” of a match between Shawn Michaels and Bret “Hitman” Hart. This, of course, is one of the most infamous moments in professional wrestling history – perhaps for all the wrong reasons. It really is rather strange that the company and Hart are now making a storyline out of it all, so many years later!
Battle #3 – Yoshi Tatsu w/Goldust vs. Caylen Croft w/Trent Barreta
Having viewed a few of Caylen Croft's matches in Florida Championship Wrestling (the development farm for WWE) and knowing Yoshi Tatsu can really fly around that ring, I'm anticipating a match which will hark back to the glory days of the WWE Cruiserweight division here. I appreciate that many people may not feel that division had a highlight but I digress.
This one did take quite a while to really get going but the end sequence was fantastic with both men coming close with near falls following really nifty manoeuvres. This was really the first time I've seen Croft in a WWE ring (I need to find time to watch ECW more often!) and I must say, I was impressed with how fluid and aware he was in there. A lot of what he was doing reminded me of a mix between Bret Hart and Mr. Perfect, which is perhaps one of the biggest compliments a young superstar could ever hope to have lavished upon them. I'm anxious to see his partner, Trent Barreta in action too as on my WWE wishlist for 2010 is a thriving tag-team division. I'll keep those fingers crossed.
After some back and forth wrestling, Tatsu walloped Croft with a vicious looking kick to pick one up for his 'W' column.
WINNER: Yoshi Tatsu

Video package for one Kofi Kingston who, simply put, had an unbelievable 2009. This Insanity writer would really love for him to take that next step up the ladder in 2010 and maybe even capture one of the big belts. Hey who knows, he has all the skills.

Another video package as we have the RAW Rebound and take a look back at this rather historic episode of the show on Monday. It was a really weird show for me as I never really did think Bret Hart would bury the hatchet with Vince McMahon enough to re-enter his company and partake in a wrestling storyline. I'm glad he did however as not only is this my favourite time of the wrestling year, I now have BRET THE FREAKING HITMAN HART along for the ride. This can only be good, even if at 'Mania he and McMahon hold a tea party.
Battle #4 – Your Main Event & Mine – Finlay vs. Mike Knox
Yet another good match for this show and it's very fair to say that each man's style compliments the others. Really good brawling style on display here which is exactly the kind of match which deserves to headline this kinda TV show.
A word for Finlay. The guy has consistently been a solid performer since his ring return a number of years ago and has proved that it isn't exactly age which governs your abilities, it's heart and determination. Every performer in the promotion could make eyes towards the “Fighting Irishman” and I cannot stress enough how impressed I am that a guy pushing 52 is able to maintain his position in such an image-obsessed profession.
Mike Knox is a man who may never catch a real break in the WWE or be a top-line star but he surely has his place in the company. In these eyes, his dissection of the human anatomy obsessed gimmick has done nothing but improve him and give him a little direction.
Finlay used his brain to win this one via use of a shillelagh shot after Mike Knox had torn one of the turnbuckle pads off. The referee was removing this item and therefore did not see the illegal strike with a weapon. This proved to be enough for the pin and another notch in the Irishman's belt. I'm normally not a big fan of this kinda finish as it reinforces that referees in the wrestling world are infact, dumb sons of bitches but this worked well and the win gained a big cheer from the live crowd.
WINNER: Finlay
Wow, this show was just enjoyable from beginning to end and while it never features any real storyline development – it really is a platform on which most of the lower card can shine on. Roll on next week!
