UFC: The Ultimate Fighter 4, recap of Episode 12

By Mallory Mahling
Nov 2, 2006, 23:16

...

Twelve weeks ago a group of seasoned Octagon veterans moved into the TUF House.  This time there was a twist—it featured fighters we’d seen on UFC shows but didn’t know too much about.  Making the ultimate prize a title shot in their respective weight class gave the competition an extra edge.  Over the weeks we came to respect and admire some of the fighters.  We learned too much about others.  The housemates also proved that if they decide to give up fighting, they’ve got careers waiting from them in demolition, since they pretty much destroyed the TUF House.  This week the last fighter will move on to the finals and “The Ultimate Fighter 4: The Comeback” will come to an end.

On with this week’s recap . . .

Travis Lutter moved on to the middleweight final last week.  Tonight we’ll find out if it’s Patrick Cote or Edwin DeWees who will be his opponent.

Charles McCarthy was shown eating non-stop at the house.  The others complained that he was even eating their personal food.  His team was annoyed at him and didn’t want to hang out with him.

The old bowl-of-water-over-the-door trick was played on everybody.  It took a while, but Captain Miserable got his turn, too.  True to his nickname, he reacted miserably.

Commercial break – This Saturday there will be a marathon of Ultimate Fight Night shows starting at 3:00 p.m. (ET).

At the UFC Training Center, DeWees said his cut was a little tender.  It wouldn’t stop him from fighting, however.  If you recall from his preliminary match, his cut was quite a gusher.

Georges St. Pierre said Patrick would need to keep the fighting standing up.

Back at the house, Mikey Burnett was on the phone with the doctor about his sore neck.  He was told he would need surgery.  The recovery would be a lengthy one.  He wasn’t eager to have someone cut on his neck, but he was told he wouldn’t be able to fight in UFC with his neck the way it is.   He said he would have to pray about it.

At the weigh-in, Dana White shared his thoughts on both fighters.

Fight day came (and there were still 40 minutes left in the show, so it must be a good one).  Steve Mazzagati was the referee.

It was a fight that had a little bit of everything.  By the second round, BamBam was looking tired and Cote was throwing some outstanding punches.  He got DeWees on the ground and went for an arm bar.  DeWees’ cut opened up toward the end of the second round.

Most of round three was on the mat, with Cote in control.

Commercial break.  (Catch the “Rocky Balblowout” on November 12 on Spike.  Now that’s clever.  The Slim Jim commercial, however, made me long for the days of Randy “Macho Man” Savage as their pitchman.)

Dana White announced that the unanimous decision of the judges was for Patrick Cote, who now moves on to the finals.

Randy Couture said DeWees showed heart and complimented his performance.

DeWees was very disappointed at the loss.

Cote will face Travis Lutter in the finals on November 11 and Matt Serra will face Chris Lytle.  The winners in each class will compete for $100,000 in cash and a $100,000 sponsorship with Xyience.  Plus a title shot, of course.

Dana White said this had been a great opportunity for these guys.

The cast members shared some thoughts on their experience.

Cote said the others had made fun of his English, but they didn’t make fun of his skills.

Burnett said he’d come to the conclusion that he needed to get his neck fixed and deal with some personal problems.

Din Thomas said it  had been the best and worst experience at the same time.

Charles McCarthy (aka Captain Miserable) said he would never do this again.

Pete Sell said he wouldn’t trade the experience for a million.

Trainer Georges St. Pierre was extremely gracious in his remarks.  He said he had grown the most.  He had learned from Matt Serra and Shonie Carter.  Almost everybody had taught him something good.   He said he can’t wait to fight Matt Hughes on November 18.

Dana said the four finalists would go home and train with their own teams and be ready for the finale live from the Hardrock Hotel in Las Vegas.

Season 3 winner Michael Bisping make his UFC debut on the show.
