The Heat Report: Roddy Piper Attacks Snuka, Wrestles The Radio Free Insanity Guest, and Teams With The Highlanders
By Saad Naeem
Today I come to you as a happy man. I am so proud of my Heat guys cause they finally hit the big time! That’s right baby, all the regulars of Heat moved on up to Monday Night Some HLA with Val Venis Shelton Benjamin vs. Super Crazy Surprise appearance from Charlie Haas hinting a reunion of The World’s Greatest Tag Team Backstage Promo with Todd Grisham, Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Shelton, and Super Crazy Viscera jobbing to Carlito and causing Torrie Wilson to lose her top in the process And tag match dedicated to Roddy Rowdy Piper between the Highlanders and Cade & Murdoch Speaking of Hot Rod, by now you might have heard that the man has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a form of cancer). Thankfully, he is getting treated and all of us at WorldWrestlingInsanity.com wish him the best. On Raw, the WWE did a classy move by having this match for Piper and looks like someone is being extra nice for Santa Claus this year cause today’s edition of Heat features some of the great moments in the career of Rowdy Roddy Piper. Before the segment starts, we hear from John Cena who has a few sympathetic words for Piper. He wishes Piper the best and says that everyone in the WWE is rooting for him. Segment 1: Piper’s Pit with Superfly Jimmy Snuka (1984) This is apparently one of the most memorable Piper’s Pit in history (I wasn’t even born yet so I can’t really say) but the WWE mentions this quite often so it must have been something special. Todd takes this time to express his sympathies too, as we go back in time to the predecessor of the Highlight Reel, Carlito’s Cabana, The Peep Show, the Cutting Edge and any other “talk show” that I have forgotten, including Café de Renee, which only had 2 episodes. Man does Roddy Piper talk fast. The recap begins with Piper telling us that Jimmy Snuka thinks Piper doesn’t let him say anything on the Pit. Snuka is just sitting there listening to Piper the whole time. Then Piper gives Snuka the mic (while his mouth goes on at 100 mph). Piper starts getting offensive as he tries to make the Rock’s uncle “feel at home on the Fiji Islands.” He takes out a pineapple and compared it to a Samoan woman (long frosty hair on top and round at the bottom.) Great metaphor Mr. Piper. That’s exactly what I think of when a woman with a round bottom….a pineapple. Then he takes it a step further by taking out some bananas and tossing them at Snuka’s who gets on his feet at this point. Piper apologizes because he doesn’t have a tree for The Superfly to climb up and down on but promises to have one next time. He even goes as far as calling Snuka a monkey. Jimbo then asks a question that makes him look like a big sissy “Are you making fun of me?” No shiz, Sherlock. If I were him, I would have decked Piper in the face a long time ago. So he pays for his mistake cause when he puts down the mic, BAM! Piper clocks Snuka in the face with a coconut. This sends Jimmy into the “walls” of Piper’s Pit which just so happen to collapse. Remember guys, it’s 1984. Piper then shouts “so you wanna say somethin” to Snuka about a million times as he squashes a banana in Snuka’s face. Piper takes off his belt (where do you put a belt on a kilt?) and whips the future WWE Hall of Famer with it. He spits on him a couple of times, blows his nose and just humiliates the poor guy. But it’s all good in the hood when you’re Rowdy Roddy Piper. Sorry guys I really didn’t find anything too important about that. I guess I’m missing something here but if I were to go out on a limb I’d say it was Piper’s words that were too racy for the time. Either that or the fact that some guy actually clocked another dude with a coconut in the face. Now that’s something you don’t see everyday, even in the WWE. Mickie James expresses her sympathies for Piper and lets it be known that he was one of her idols growing up. By the way, all these Piperiffic moments are available now in Piper’s new DVD “Born to Controversy.” Hacksaw Jim Duggan is next to express his grief and man was it weird to see Hacksaw out of character. He doesn’t look as ugly and it’s nice to see that every other word isn’t HOOOO or USA!! He says that he will be giving Piper a call really soon and he knows how Hot Rod feels because Duggan himself had a fight with cancer. Match 1: Rowdy Roddy Piper vs. Ric Flair The year is 1991. The place; Madison Square Garden. 15 years ago these two legends locked kilts and fancy looking robes in an epic battle that hasn’t been aired ever since. Is that a good thing? I dunno. Let’s see what went down in the Big Apple a decade and a half ago. The recap starts off with a lockup and Hot Rod Irish whips the Nature Boy to the ropes. Flair actually does a leapfrog (never thought I’d say that) but gets clocked with a Rowdy right hand. Lots of cheers from the crowd. Flair backed into the corner as Piper lays on some stiff shots to Naitch. Wow wrestling actually looked much realer back in the day. Flair reverses with a kick to the midsection and then some shots of his send Piper to the ground. Flair nails a knee drop and then applies a headlock. Piper reverses as a bit of chain wrestling takes place. The Dirtiest Player in the game rakes the Scottish Eyes, and throws Piper out the ring. But the future Hall of Famer runs back in the ring only to get tossed out the other side. Flair goes out behind him and connects with some knife edge chops. It’s really weird seeing chops and not hearing any WHOOOs. Flair heads back into the ring stopping the count out. Flair hotspots Piper’s head on the top rope and then drags him into the ring. Piper blocks a right hand and comes back with some knife edge chops and open handed chops capped off with a big back body drop. He nails a great knee lift which sends Flair flying in the air and a clothesline that sends him out the ring. Piper nails a forearm off the apron and tosses Naitch back in the squared circle. Flair does his patented “please no more” beg off routine but Piper has none of it. He drags Slick Ric to the corner and nails 10 punches. Then he goes for a bulldog but Flair tosses him right into the ref. I guess this sort of thing used to happen back then too. Flair tries for a scoop slam (nowadays it’d be a low blow) but Piper reverses it into a small package. Earl Hebner is out so no count. Another ref slides in the ring as Hot Rod slides Flair up in a schoolboy but only gets a 2 count. The future tag team champs exchange blows and Piper sends Flair into the corner and then clotheslines him out the ring. The new ref is attending to the old ref as Flair grabs a chair from the audience and clocks Piper with the fakest chair shot I have ever seen. I’m pretty sure the chair didn’t even touch Piper but the audience reacts like Flair just bashed Piper’s skull in with a sledgehammer. Flair goes for the cover but Piper kicks out. He hulks up and locks the sleeper on Flair only to have it countered with a backdrop. Flair goes up top but even in 1991 he can’t connect. He hits Piper a couple of times and then Piper gets all fired up and asks for more. Flair’s best attempts fail and Piper fights back with fists and a great neckbreaker. Piper wants some revenge so he grabs a steel chair from the outside but Flair punches him in the face and pins Piper with his feet on the ropes and just like that the match is over. After the match, Piper gets some payback as he nails the ref and Flair with four chair shots. Winner: Ric Flair Wow. What a great match but what a crappy ending. These two had me impressed but the ending of the match killed everything. C’mon guys. Imagine having Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels at Wrestlemania 21 end with Kurt Angle grabbing the ropes for the victory. Wouldn’t that just demolish the greatness of the match? But I was really impressed by something. The wrestling was real. Sure these guys did nothing but punch each other and a few back drops, but it all looked real. That made it a great match as well. Next up on the Get Well Piper Channel is my main man Shelton Benjamin. He’s wearing a pretty cool WWE shirt that I’ve personally never seen before. He thanks Roddy for helping out the young guys and calls him an inspiration. WWE SHOP.com promo. Smart business idea bringing back the Retro shirts. I loved Austin’s “What” Shirt. Too bad there’s no who, when, where, why or how. Match 2: Rowdy Poddy Piper vs. The Mountie What great timing for this match as we have the Mountie on this week's edition of JG‘s Radio Free Insanity . (You still have a day to hear it on the main site. After tomorrow, it will be archived on ClubWWI.com) The recap starts off with a WWE rewind. Its the 1992 Royal Rumble when Hot Rod made the Mountie pass out to the sleeper hold and won the Intercontinental Title. The rematch took place at the 1992 Saturday’s Night Main Event and this is it. The Mountie comes out with Jimmy Hart and Piper comes out to a HUGE pop. The place is hot for Hot Rod. When the ref shows both men the title that will be on the line Mountie grabs it and climbs the top rope, acting like he actually won the damn thing. Piper’s distracted so Jimmy Hart actually attacks him from behind. Piper turns around which gives the Mountie a chance to get in a sneak attack. He tosses Piper out the ring but Roddy gets into the ring and knocks both men out. Mountie retreats to the outside but Piper follows him and nails a noggin knocker (double headbutt) on Mountie and Hart. By the way, he’s wrestling with his shirt on. Mr. “I always get my man” gets to his feet but Piper brings him back down with a hard running forearm. As the men slide back in the ring Mountie gains control. He goes for a big splash but Piper puts his knees up. Then he nails a series of rights and lefts and goes for a bulldog only to be thrown into the referee. Talk about déjà vu. Mountie then mounts Piper up and nails him with a hard piledriver. Jimmy Hart hands him a glass of water (okay…) which he spills on Piper and then actually uses a shock stick to electrocute him. Unbelievable. But you wanna know what more unbelievable? Piper doesn’t feel a damn thing and he just jumps to his feet like nothing happened. The audience is cheering. I can’t believe they buy this crap. Anyways, Piper punches Mountie in the face and grabs the shock stick from him. He sticks it straight in his heart and then gets the cover and the victory. After the match Piper reveals his secret. He takes off his shirt to reveal a shock proof jacket. That Roddy. Just when you have the answers, Piper changes the questions. Winner: Rowdy Roddy Piper Good match. It was brief and the Mountie had no offense but it made Piper look like a future legend. He outsmarted his opponent and retained his title. Nice one Hot Rod. Charlie Haas expresses his concern for Piper next. He says his prayers are with Piper. He actually sounds much different than I thought he would but that’s because I’ve never really heard his voice. Don’t Try This At Home promo. Okay Mr. Announcer Guy, I won’t try it at home but you never said anything about school. The Highlanders express their concern for Piper on behalf of Scotland. They say the whole country respects him and it was an honor for them to work with him. Match 3: The Highlanders and Roddy Rowdy Piper vs. The Spirit Squad Here’s a bit of trivia for you. How many times has Hot Rod wrestled in his kilt? Believe it or not, the answer is just once. This match. That’s kind of interesting. This match took place on the Sept. 11 edition of Raw in Madison Square Garden so it’s quite recent. Match starts with Johnny hitting a clothesline in the corner on Robbie (I’m Robbie!) and then a tag to Kenny. They nail a double suplex on the Highlander as JR compares Kenny to Lebron James. Sorry kiddo not a chance. He locks in a headlock but when Robbie tries to fight out, he gets with an illegal shot from Johnny. A hell of a double team by the Green World Order as Kenny catapults Mikey into the air who nails Robbie with a forearm on his way down. A running knee lift by Mikey only gets a 2. He continuously pummels the Scot and then tags in Kenny. Kenny hits a flying elbow but just another 2 count goes down. Tag to Johnny who gets caught into a sunset flip but kicks out and responds with a vicious clothesline. Robbie fights out of a rear chin lock as Johnny clocks the illegal Scotsmen on the apron. But it costs him as Robbie catches him with a huge big body drop and eventually makes the tag to Hot Rod. The crowd goes wild as the Hall of Famer unloads some fists on the Suck Squad. Rake to the eye, hip toss and then a knee lift to the male cheerleaders. But Mr. I wanna be part of Rated RKO clocks him with a few punches but gets thrown out the ring onto the 2 SS members not in the match. Rake to Johnny’s eyes as the Highlanders hit the Scot Drop from which Piper picks up the victory. All’s well in Scotland as the Knights in skirts beat the evil cheerleaders. Winners: Rowdy Roddy Piper and The Highlanders Pretty cool match. I like the Highlanders and respect Piper so they deserved the victory. A get well wish from Torrie Wilson as she introduces “the best threesome in the WWE” herself and her dogs. She says she appreciates Piper’s sense of humor and loved working with him here and in WCW. She said he gives great hugs Last person to give their get wells is Ron Simmons. He is sporting my new favorite shirt and ends Heat with “God Bless You Piper.” Man I was hoping he’d say DAMN! All in all, pretty good show. Very good idea for the superstar wishes. It showed that the WWE considers Piper a great asset and show him respect by displaying some defining moments in his career. By the way, our own Mike Rickard is presently compiling a scrap book to be sent to Roddy Piper. As many know, Roddy is suffering from Lymphoma. This scrap book would be a great way to remind him of the support he has within the wrestling fan community. Send along poems, photos, or stories (DO NOT SEND MONEY) to Mike at the following address: Mike Rickard II Also, I’d like to use this time for a cheap plug. Check out my MySpace and add me as a friend. Thanks. Thanks for clicking the link and I hope you enjoyed it.
