Rickard's Ramblings 12/31/06 Cheesy cage in ROH/Joe Angle XII/Olympic level insanity/Diva Dingbat/Feedback to Flair Title Reign
By Mike Rickard II
After a long week in court, there’s nothing like rambling on about the latest happenings in the wild and wacky world of professional wrestling. Help me wind down from lawyer mode to smark mode as I ask a few questions of you, the intelligent wrestling fan.
CROSS EXAMINATION
1. Do you think K-Fed’s match with Cena will last long enough to fix yourself a sandwich?
2. Doesn’t MVP’s charisma remind you a little of the Rock?
3. How many weeks before you break that New Year’s resolution not to watch any more WWE PPV’s besides Wrestlemania?
4. Anyone remember a masked world champion before Abyss?
5. Which of the following former Divas will do Playboy first- Trish Stratus, Stacy Keibler, or Lita?
White picket fence of death-ROH fans have been beaming about the Ring of Honor/Combat Zone Wrestling interpromotional feud ever since it first started. While I can’t say that I’m a hardcore ROH fan, I certainly enjoy the promotion and believe it’s one of the true alternatives to the WWE. As soon as I heard that the blow-off to the ROH/CZW feud would take place in a War Games style match, I ordered the DVD. Unfortunately the DVD was defective and I had to send it back. ROH customer service was awesome and they mailed me back a replacement DVD, no questions asked. After watching the highly publicized match, all I can say is
While ROH is known for its scientific masterpieces, the crew at ROH have shown that they can brawl with the best of them (if you don’t believe me, check out the ROH DVD Bloodlust Vol. 1: Bloodiest Matches for starters). I also saw a wild No D.Q. match in Buffalo last year featuring the Embassy versus Generation Next. which absolutely blew me away.
Sadly, the Cage of Death was a real disappointment. For starters, the cage looked like a glorified room divider ; not quite a white picket fence but not quite a cage. Everytime a wrestler got thrown into the six foot high (okay, maybe it was seven feet tall) “cage”, it looked like it was going to shatter. Even by ROH standards, the cage was shit.
More importantly, the match itself stunk (at least by ROH standards). There were more blown spots than an opening bout at an indie school show. Given the talent of the guys working the match, there was no excuse for it. Further complicating things was the lack of commentary during the match. Some people have talked about how the lack of commentary made the match more exciting but it was noticeable by its absence. Anyone unfamiliar with the match and the workers was left in the dark due to the lack of commentary. ROH really dropped the ball on this one.
Samoa Joe/Angle XII- I enjoyed Joe/Angle I. I thrilled to the rematch even more but does TNA really need to have another rematch so soon (Especially given the reports of Samoa Joe’s reported MCL sprain)? Why not do an injury angle and put Angle into a new program while Joe heals? TNA fans have been chomping at the bit hypothesizing on all of the dream matches involving the Olympic Hero and the many talented stars on the TNA roster. Don’t burn them out on Joe/Angle when there are so many other matches to choose from.
Kurt Angle; Olympic level insanity-Rumors are flying like crazy that Kurt Angle is certifiably insane. Whether it’s Kurt suggesting Chris Sabin adopt a "Pigpen" gimmick because of his appearance or Kurt working way too stiff; everyone at TNA seems to have a “Kurt’s batshit insane” story. Given the circumstances surrounding Angle’s departure from the WWE, is anyone surprised?
A dearly departed dingbat-sometimes these things just write themselves. As you’ve probably heard, Jimmy Wang Yang’s blond sidekick Amy recently parted ways with the WWE. Now, stories are coming out as to why. Let’s have some fun though and try to guess exactly what reason led to her departure.
1. She insulted recent Diva Search winner Layla 2. She made fun of Kristal Marshall’s extensions 3. She made fun of Vickie Guerrero’s looks and asked her why she was a Diva. 4. She asked Stephanie McMahon who she was after Big Steph gave her pointers on cutting an interview. 5. All of the above.
If you guessed all of the above, you are 100% correct! Rumor also has it that WWE Talent Tool John Laurinaitis went to bat to keep her job but the Stephanie incident was the last straw for this clueless twat.
Personally, I think the WWE really missed the boat by firing this dipshit. They could have had a hit reality show on par with The Simple Life if they kept her around. Of course the inevitable wrongful death suit involving her and the Undertaker would probably offset any profits made so maybe it was a good move to can her.
Flair vs. Nitro for the WWE Championship? : Last week I suggested that Ric Flair be given one last program featuring him taking on the WWE champion. With Flair’s popularity as hot as ever, it seems like a natural way (no pun intended) to sell a couple PPV’s and give the Man the send-off he deserves (and needs). Over at Rickard’s House of Old School, the Insanity Forum members were split on whether they wanted to see Naitch wrestle for the world strap with 53% saying yes,, 38% saying no, and 7% saying they’re not sure. Here are some of the highlights:
I'm all for it if it means Flair will finally stop killing himself in the ring.-Green Teabagger
I wouldn't say I'm against it, but it has to be done in a special way, and not like a regular title feud. And the guy he'd drop it to would have to be a first time winner for me, so they can be put over big. –Aaron Wood
Flair is too old and out of shape to be a contender against the others in the picture now. I like Flair. Always have. But his title does are done-liviya
It wouldn't make any sense at this point, even with the nostalgia factor. Naitch is seasons past his prime and while he can still go when he needs to, all we have to do is look at that laughable IC Title reign he had near the end of '05 to remind us just why Naitch doesn't need a belt at this stage of his career.-MC US Titlebelt
I'd like to see Flair have a last title reign, as long as it's not particularly long or dominant. That being said, if the WWE gives him a title reign, it won't be his last, because he isn't retiring any time soon, and in a couple years people will be wondering again "When is Ric Flair going to get one last title reign?" –Perfect Snapmare
