Mallory looks at the K-Fed Fallout; MMA’s bright new year

By Mallory Mahling

...

The year 2007 seems to be off to an auspicious start for WWE.  They got a boatload of publicity for featuring Kevin Federline on Monday night’s show.  But is it really the good  kind of publicity?  Only time (and ratings) will tell.

I was hoping K-Fed would go away after his match with John Cena.  But Brittany's ferrett-faced ex seems to be milking his time in the spotlight for all its worth.  Besides, a guy with four kids and two baby mamas has to earn a buck somehow.

Too bad he’s looking for his bucks in the wrestling business, though.  He seems as ill-suited for wrestling as he was for his brief rapping career.  He was horrible in the ring on Monday night, doing his best imitation of a sack of potatoes, and he wasn’t much better on the mic.  Yo, yo, yo.

When is WWE going to realize that Raw fans want to see good matches?  Is that really too much to ask?  I would venture to say that no more than 15 minutes—TOTAL--was devoted to matches on Monday night.  The rest of the show was fluff, filler, nonsense, and crap.  In fact, the best thing on Raw Monday night was the highlight reel from the Baghdad trip.

On a related note, the once mighty wrestling fed is apparently feeling the sting of TNA.  Jonathan Coachman lost his cool on a live mic during the New Year's Revolution press conference this week when fans in attendance started chanting "TNA."  He snapped back, calling TNA inferior.  Like it or not, TNA is NOT inferior and its getting better and better all the time.  Obviously, it has started to get under WWE's corporate skin.  WWE would be wise to examine what it is that wrestling fans find so appealing about TNA.  It's not rocket science, after all.  It's good matches, improved storylines and getting one's money's worth for pay-per-views.

A stellar start to MMA’s new year. . .

Speaking of auspicious starts to the new year, UFC started off 2007 by signing Cro Cop, a huge name in the MMA world.  (Unlike WWE, UFC goes after real stars, not the ex-husbands of stars.)  Also, IFL will be back for a second season and better than ever after their successful initial public offering.  I’m really looking forward to what’s on the horizon for MMA this year.
