Orlando, Florida-Word is coming in that Total Nonstop Action Wrestling (TNA)’s recent collaboration with anti-smoking forces has become an overnight success. Recently, TNA announced its partnership with anti-smoking group www.thetruth.com wherein longtime TNA wrestler Ron “The Truth” Killings would make weekly appearances where he would urge TNA fans to stop smoking. The campaign got off to a slow start until last week when Killings appeared on TNA’s flagship program Impact and pledged to give up rapping if fans would give up smoking cigarettes.
“Frankly, we were shocked by the reaction to Killings offer” said Tony Harris, vice-president of public relations for the anti-smoking group, “We never thought TNA had 10,000 fans, let alone that many who would give up smoking”
Spurred by the anti-smoking campaign’s success, other groups have approached TNA to pursue similar partnership deals. The March of Dimes and the American Heart Association (AHA) both expressed interest in a telethon where TNA fans would pledge money in exchange for TNA mainstay Jeff Jarrett agreeing to stay off of TNA television for at least a year. AHA CEO M. Cass Wheeler was quoted as saying “Our research consultant Dave Meltzer advised us that if we thought the results of the Killings campaign would be nothing compared to the results we could get with a pledge from Jarrett to stay home for a year. That’s the kind of results you just can’t find anywhere else”
