2/22 TNA IMPACT: Mallory's Ongoing Coverage of the Show

By Mallory Mahling

...

Welcome to tonight's real-time coverage of TNA Impact. You may need to hit "refresh" from time to time to see the latest update.

**************

Tonight's show was taped February 12 in Orlando, Florida.

Mike Tenay and Don West welcomed viewers as AJ Styles headed out. He climbed to the top of the Elevation X framework, and from his lofty perch, he put himself over as the most decorated wrestler in TNA history. He'd invented the X Division, he boasted. Top of the world, Ma. (He should keep in mind how that turned out for James Cagney in the movie with the same phrase.)

Rhyno had heard enough. He ran out and climbed to the top of the Elevation X structure. AJ quickly climbed down as Rhyno challenged him to an Elevation X match at "Destination X." Rhyno also had three words for him: GORE, GORE, GORE.

Team 3D said their paisans would be circling the ring for the Belting Pot Match and taking care of business, unlike the hood rats who'd be watching LAX's back.

(1) NYC Belting Pot Match: Team 3D (Brother Devon & Brother Ray w/Cousin Steve Schirripa) vs. LAX (Homicide & Hernandez w/Konnan. Team 3D's wise-guys looked pretty impressive outside the ring, but when Brother Devon found himself on the outside, he got a taste of the hood rats' belts. Hot tag to Brother Ray. Two near falls for 3D. Back and forth it went, with both sides getting their share of welts. Suddenly the paisans and the hood rats were at war with each other and ignoring the action in the ring. Cousin Steve became the third "D" in Team 3D and they triple-teamed Homicide. "Get the tables," came the battle cry. They weren't able to get the tables, but they did make the winning pin. "Team 3D just whacked LAX," announced Tenay as Team 3D and the paisans celebrated in the ring.

Sting was rather morbid tonight, talking about life and death. At "Destination X," he said he would put Abyss on his "Deathbed" and let him chose life or death. The choice would be his, said Sting, because the evil Mr. Mitchell was no longer in control of Aybss.  The deathbed in question was a bed not to be confused with a comfy Temperpedic bed.

Jeremy Borash asked Abyss for his thoughts on Sting's comments and got choked for his trouble.

(2) Tag Team Match: James Storm, a reluctant Eric Young & Robert Roode vs. Voodoo Kin Mafia (BG James & Kim James) & Lance Hoyt. Team Heel won, but their celebration was cut short when Chris Harris ran out and chased after Storm.

Andre Rison was in the ring with Don West. He would be appearing on "Pro's vs. Joe's," coming up next Spike TV. Andre has a potty mouth. Abyss came out and cut the interview short when he slammed Rison.

Paparazzi Idol auditions continued, this time for Randy Savage imitators. (Kevin Nash isn't the most PC person in the world.)

Jim Cornette was in the ring with Mike Tenay for the Scott Steiner-Kurt Angle contract signing for their "Destination X" match. Cornette said they'd asked for a "public execution" of the contract. Hmmm…ominous words. All four of them sat down at the table set up in the ring.  They were literally elbow-to-elbow.

Steiner dissed Angle's gold medal.

Tenay dissed Angle's former employer who'd dissed his gold medal.

Angle dissed Steiner and called him a dumbass.  He warned Steiner the match might be his last.

They signed on the dotted lines, then it was on to the "public execution" of each other. Steiner busted Angle open and he was bleeding profusely.

Tomko and Christian Cage ran out and gave Angle a beat down. Supposedly Tomko and Cage weren't even at the show. Liar, liar pants on fire. Steiner shoved the contract down Angle's throat in a gesture of utter contempt.

(Commercial break)

Samoa Joe said he'd been ignored for 20 months, but at "Destination X" he will be denied no longer.

(3) X-Division Ladder Match to determine the Number One Contender to Chris Sabin's X-Division Championship: Sonjay Dutt, Senshi, Jerry Lynn, Austin Star and Jay Lethal. Fast paced, with Jerry Lynn introducing a ladder early in the match.

As the show went to commercial, Mr. Backlund came down the ramp.

Back from the break, it was fast and furious. Mr. Backlund seemed to be scouting the match. Three ladders were set up with everybody trying to climb up and grab the big red "X." Jerry Lynn was the last man standing at the top of the ladder. He grabbed the "X" and got the match against Chris Sabin at the PPV.

Mr. Backlund stepped into the ring and shook Lynn's hand. Backlund extended his hand to Starr, too, but Starr was rude to the legend. Cross-face chicken wing on Starr by Backlund to put the youngster in his place.

Tenay announced that doctors were treating Angle in the back and to stay tuned after the match for graphic coverage of Angle getting stitched up. Not for the weak of stomach.

Good show, with a little bit of everything. The only trouble is it's just a "little bit." That X-Division Ladder Match deserved more than the few minutes it got.
