Live WrestleMania Weekend Coverage: Exclusive Report From Wrestlemania Bruncheon
By Mike Rickard II
The WWE continued its traditional Wrestlemania brunch this year as Detroit’s Renaissance Center Marriot Hotel hosted Bacon, Bagels, and Biceps; a warm-up for fans attending Wrestlemania as part of the WWE’s Wrestlemania travel package. Fans enjoyed a buffet breakfast with a variety of foods such as bacon, bagels, muffins, eggs, and fruit (although it should be noted that there were no biceps as promised). During the breakfast, clips of Wrestlemania moments from years gone by were shown on two big screen televisions.
WWE TV personality Josh Matthews warmed up the crowd with the help of WWE Hall of Famer Jimmy “Mouth of the South” Hart. Matthews went around the ballroom where the brunch was held and asked the fans where they were from. There were fans from places as far away as Japan, England, Ireland, Israel, and Australia. While the majority of the fans in attendance had no use for Matthews; that wasn’t the case with Hart. They cheered “The Mouth of the South” and enjoyed hearing him reminisce about Wrestlemania III and the matches he worked.
Mick Foley then arrived to present awards to the WWE’s Circle of Champions; a Make- A-Wish Program event where Make-A-Wish kids were brought in to Detroit to celebrate the Wrestlemania weekend. Foley interacted with the kids and asked them which match they were looking forward to. Cena/Michaels was just about everyone’s choice with John Cena receiving the majority of votes as to who they wanted to see win.
After the awards were handed out, Josh Matthews returned to introduce the WWE Superstars and ECW Extremists participating in the brunch. RAW’s Victoria, Candace Michelle, and Chris Masters; SmackDown!’s Paul London, Brian Kendrick, and Mark Henry; and ECW’s Hardcore Holly, Marcus Cor Von, and Matt Striker. They all talked about the impact Wrestlemania played in their decisions to become professional wrestlers. Hardcore Holly told the fans that whether they liked him or they hated him; he appreciated the fans buying tickets to see him. Mark Henry couldn’t care less about the fans and at one point called out some of the Make-A-Wish kids after they had some negative comments for him. Hardcore Holly told Henry to sit down as he wouldn’t last long against the kids.
A brief question and answer session was held with the fans getting the opportunity to interact with the wrestlers. One fan asked Marcus Cor Von who he’d like to wrestle from “that other organization” if they came to the WWE. As “Monty Brown” chants filled the room, Cor Von told them he was in a new organization and he had a new name. He talked about how he left his comfort zone to work for the WWE and he was ready to prove himself in the WWE.
Another fan asked Hardcore Holly how he felt when he beat Mantaur to qualify for the King of the Ring. The fan then started making smart-ass comments to Holly until the former Sparky Plugg told him to “sit his fat ass down” and the audience erupted with applause.
One of the more candid questions from the fans was one asking Paul London and Brian Kendrick how they felt about being tag team champions but not working the biggest show of the year. Kendrick responded by saying if he booked the show; he’d be in the main event but that’s not how things worked. He answered the question by saying that it’s all about proving yourself and waiting for your opportunity to come. When the time is right, they’ll be ready. Paul London made a rambling, incoherent answer that had people wondering if he’d just flown in from Mars.
The event was a fun-filled warm-up for Wrestlemania with the fans getting the chance to load up on food and chill out before the big show. Some of the food was good and some of the food was bland but overall, there was plenty of food and something for everyone. Everyone in attendance received a Wrestlemania 23 license plate; a Wrestlemania 23 keychain (made to look like their WM ticket), and a Bacon, Bagels, and Biceps coffee cup. Hats off to the WWE for giving the fans lots of cool things to do before the show such as the premiere of The Condemned, the Hall of Fame ceremony, and this brunch.
