4/2 WWE RAW: Mallory's Ongoing Coverage of the Show

By Mallory Mahling
Apr 2, 2007, 23:32

...

Welcome to WWI's real-time coverage of Raw. You may need to hit "refresh" from time to time for the latest update.

The first stop on the Road to WrestleMania 24 was the Nutter Center in Dayton, Ohio. Hall of Famers Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler welcomed viewers to the show.

Tonight's show will undoubtedly be laced with images of WrestleMania, and I sure wouldn't mind another look at the awesome Mustang Cena used to make his entrance last night. It appeared to be one of the new Carroll Shelby GT-H limited edition Mustangs.

* * *

The Champ, John Cena headed down to the ring to start the show. His reception from the crowd was mixed and he looked like it hurt his feelings.

Shawn Michaels, the other half of the Tag Team Champions came out to give Cena a piece of his mind. (He mentioned "massive egos" and his use of the word "brutha" had a familiar ring to it. Read into that what you will.) Anyway, Michaels said he was sick and tired of having to come out the night after 'Mania and tell his opponent he was the better man. Cena, simply put, was NOT the better man.

Cena said he thought HBK's words sounded like a challenge. Any time, any place.

Michaels said he wasn't busy. Right here, right now.

Jonathan Coachman came out to say that Mister McMahon said there will be no rematch tonight. However, since they are the Tag Champs, they would be competing in a tag match tonight. It would be at 10-team, 20-man over the top rope battle royal. The Tag Title would be on the line and it would start immediately.

The entrances began as the show went to commercial.

(Commercial break)

(1) Tag Champs John Cena & Shawn Michaels, vs. King Booker & Finley, RVD & Sabu, Kenny Dykstra & Chris Masters, the Highlanders, Chavo Guerrero & Gregory Helms, Cryme & Tyme, Matt Striker & Elijah Burke, Deuce & Domino, Jim Duggan & Eugene. Since the match had started during the break, it was already in full schmozz and impossible to tell who was who, especially since it consisted of all three brands. Suffice it to say, Cena and HBK retained their titles.

Whoa, whoa, whoa, announced Coach as he set up the next match, another 10-team, 20-man battle royal. WWE has 20 tag teams???

Ugh! How could a show that was so good last night be followed by a show that is boring me silly?

(Commercial break)

(2) Cena & HBK vs. Jeff & Matt Hardy, and a bunch of guys clubbering each other since this match had also started during a break. Among them were Viscera & Val Venis, Lance Cade & Trevor Murdoch, Marcus Cor Von & Kevin Thorn, Chavo & Helms (AGAIN), Johnny Nitro & The Miz, Tommy Dreamer & Sandman, Kendrick & London.

(Commercial break)

The battle had raged on during the commercial (of course) and Miz was just about to dump Cena over the side. HBK got rid of Miz, then he picked up Cena and threw him over the top rope. What was he thinking?

Obviously, the tag titles were going to change hands tonight. The Hardys and Cade & Murdoch were the final two teams. The Hardys looked a bit the worse for wear from last night, but they persevered, worked well in unison and made sure Team Redneck went over the top. Matt and Jeff Hardy are the new Tag Team Champs -- one from Smackdown and one from Raw. Now that could be interesting.

(Commercial break)

Todd Grisham was with HBK and asked why he'd eliminated Cena from the tag competition.

Randy Orton butted in and told HBK he'd blown his chance. Cena cannot beat Orton, he boasted. Blah, blah, blah.

HBK told Orton what he'd told Cena--Orton was NOT the better man either.

Harumph was Orton's response. More or less.

Highlights of WrestleMania 23 aired. If you didn't see it, order the replay. It was a thoroughly enjoyable show.

Coach was in the McBoss's office trying to persuade him not to go out to the ring. He was not shown, but the reactions of the people he passed in the hallway were shown. Maria and Candice Michelle. Cryme Tyme and Eugene. And, course, a DAMN from Ron Simmons. McMahon's mood grew more sour the moment.

(Commercial break)

Lillian introduced The Chairman of the Board, who came out wearing a hat but still strutting like always. (Mister McMahon is just not a hat person.)

McMahon said he had no intention of eating a slice of humble pie tonight. He said April Fool's Day had been a day of infamy. A travesty had been perpetrated by Steve Austin. Were it not for Austin, Donald Trump would have no hair.

"You suck," the audience told him.

McMahon continued anyway. He said that WrestleMania had not happened for him. Apparently denial isn't just a river in Egypt. He was re-writing the record book tonight and named himself as the winner of the Billionaires Match. Since he couldn't take Bobby Lashley's hair, he decided he could take his belt. Tonight Lashley would meet Uuuuuu-maga in the ring for a rematch.

Despite suggestions from the audience, he refused to take his hat off. In fact, he said, he'd had it permanently attached to his head. His doctor had assured him his hair would grow back as thick as ever because he had more testosterone than a men's prison. (I think that hat is on too tight.)

As McMahon started to leave, Bobby Lashley came down the ramp. McMahon started to punch Lashley but missed. Lashley grabbed the hat and displayed the bald head for all to see. McMahon grabbed J.R.'s Stetson, then put his head up Lillian's skirt. That was just creepy. McMahon gave up and ran up the ramp and away from prying eyes.

(Commercial break)

(3) Whooohoooo. Another Tag Team Match. Carlito (w/Torrie) & Ric Flair vs. Shelton Benjamin & Charlie Haas. Charlie Haas was beating the stuffing out of Carlito, then Benjamin made a tag and continued to pummel Carlito. A spring board elbow by Carlito turned things around and he was able to make the tag to Flair. A Figure Four on Haas and Flair won the match for his team.

Highlights were shown of Saturday night's emotional Hall of Fame induction ceremony. J.R. and The King were among the inductees. (Lawler is suddenly looking younger than springtime. Botox?)

(Commercial break)

Joining Todd Grisham at ringside was Timbaland. He said was there as a fan, but, coincidentally, he had an album coming out tomorrow. Why are they letting him talk? He was rambling on about being Ricky Bobby. Huh?

Melina came out for a Photo Op and volunteered to be in Timbaland's video. He was positively drooling.

While Melina was posing, Mickie James ran out and planted Melina on the mat with a DDT.

(Commercial break)

Mick Foley talked about the WWE Super Stars and their passion for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Next Monday night, Foley will make a special Make-A-Wish come true.

(4) Great Khali vs. Super Crazy. Crazy tried his very best (and I would have loved to see him win this), but Khali slammed him and stood on his chest to make the pin.

McMahon was in his office wearing a ballcap. Estrada was trying to calm him down. That only infuriated McMahon, who decided Estrada would make a good tag team partner for Umaga. It would now be a handicap match.

(Commercial break)

Maria was with Matt and Jeff Hardy, who were thrilled to be six-time tag champs. They clinked belts in a congratulatory gesture.

Stone Cold's new movie, "The Condemned," premiered on Friday in Detroit. It opens in theatres on April 27.

Edge came out on stage. He was limping, but considering the last time we saw him he was being carted out of WrestleMania on a backboard, he looked remarkably well. He was mad that Shawn Michaels had requested a shot at the WWE Championship and that Orton wanted a turn, too. He said he intended to be the next WWE Champion. Do you think he might like some cheese with that whine?

(Commercial break)

(5) Handicap Match: Umaga & Armando Estrada vs. Bobby Lashley. Estrada was looking a little nervous. Before Estrada could even roll up his sleeves, Umaga was pounding on Lashley. With Umaga's bulldozing and Estrada's dirty tricks, Lashley wasn't doing too well. He began to rally, but it was brief. But when it came time for the Samoan Spike, Lashley came to life and blocked it, then unleashed a flurry of punches. When the dust had settled, Lashley had pinned Estrada for the win.

* * *

I really enjoyed WrestleMania last night. Tonight's show? Not so much. And what's with all the tag matches tonight???
