Mallory's Recap of The Ultimate Fighter 5 - Episode 2
By Mallory Mahling
The show started with a recap of last week's action. Cole Miller had won the first fight, but was so emotional that he immediately ran to the locker room in tears. It was explained that he was crying because the win had meant so much to him. Some of the guys at the house had made a TUF Title Belt that will be passed around to each week's winner. Miller was the first recipient. Allen "Monstah" Berube, who had lost last week, returned to the house. In case someone has to leave, he will be the designated substitute. It was massage day, which sounds tranquil enough. Suddenly Fat Gabe told Matt Wiman how much he didn't like him. Where did that come from? It escalated until they were persuaded to make an uneasy peace. That wasn't the last we heard from Fat Gabe, however. It was time to pick the fighters and Penn figured that Team Pulver would want to pick off his weak fighters. B.J. had a plan and conspired with Emerson to deliver a message that would trigger a reaction from Team Pulver. It wasn't necessarily the reaction B.J. wanted, but it put a big smile on his face nonetheless. Oh yeah, they finally got around to picking the fight: Manny Gamburyan vs. Noah Thomas. Noah is a former Marine with 40 fights but he said he was still considered the underdog. When he's getting ready for a fight, he's a different person, he said (although he seemed to be trying to convince himself). At the house, some of the guys were sunbathing by the pool when they spotted a couple of girls on horseback. Emerson invited them to the front of the house, where one of the horses slipped and fell on the slick driveway. It was a group effort to get the horse back on its feet. The horse was shaky and someone suggested giving it some hay. Or a Power Bar. Matt Wiman was still getting grief from Fat Gabe and the others decided it was time to let B.J. know what was going on. Matt, I should note, had done nothing warrant Fat Gabe's wrath. Gabe has issues. Lots of issues. BJ decided to put his foot down. He gathered the guys together and said they needed to take care of this right now. They might want to fight, but BJ didn't want to waste the fighters' time. It wasn't elementary school. He told them to "man up." Gabe and Matt shook hands. Sort of. Manny, of Team Pulver, talked about his cousin, UFC fighter Karo Parysian, and how they had been training partners for 15 years. Manny had hurt his shoulder about 2½ years ago and had not fought since then, but he was ready now and hungry. Noah talked about his time in the Marines. He said it had made him more tenacious and it would be hard to break him. At the weigh in, Noah got on the scales eating a sandwich. Manny was not impressed, nor does he seem to like Noah very much. Dana recalled meeting Manny when he was much shorter. He called Manny "a tough little bastard. If he can't submit someone, he'll rip their limbs off." Dana wasn't exaggerating, as we saw later in the show. Penn took a page out of the Ken Shamrock "Golden Book of MMA Training" and gave his guys a day of rest before the fight. So what did restless guys with too much time on their hands do? They got out the crayons to write on the walls. Most of them wrote messages of support for the troops. Then Emerson decided to add a message: "Suck it, Team Pulver." Team Pulver got back from training and saw the writing on the walls. Nate Diaz took it personally and had a few comments of his own, most of which started with the letter "F." Manny picked up where Nate left off, and he went absolutely ballistic. Corey observed that Manny had used up a tremendous amount of energy that he should have saved for the fight the next day. Corey told Manny, his "home boy," that he had looked like a fool and had given the other team what they'd wanted. Corey succeeded in calming Manny down. This was a different Corey than we saw last week. This was the Good Corey. (Next week we get to see the Bad Corey.) In the end, the "suck it" message was crossed out and "love ya" appeared in its place. The next morning, Noah and Manny were training at the house. Manny was singing to psyche himself up for the fight. Then it was fight time. There were only six minutes left in the show, so it wasn't going to be a lengthy war in the Octagon. As it turned out, the fight was all Manny's and he completely dominated it. A disappointed Noah realized he should have been more aggressive. Wistfully, he said he didn't know where to go now. Noah needed a hug. Next week: B.J. and his coaches sit the team down for a Come-to-Jesus meeting. Gabe gets a colonic to lose weight. (Figures he'd go for that.) And the Bad Corey comes out. * * * * * Still in the Running Team Penn: Gray Maynard Matt Wiman Gabe Ruediger Joe Lauzon Robert Emerson Andy Wang Team Pulver: Corey Hill Nate Diaz Brandon Melendez Brandon Sims Manuel Gamburyan Cole Miller Brian Geraghty Wayne Weems
