Hey there everyone and welcome to Backlash 2007. Let's get this thing going!
Our intro video for the evening deals with what happened at Wrestlemania in the main matches, before bringin us up to speed on what we are about to see!
Nice stage we have tonight, although I always preferred the swinging sythes. JR & Lawler (Not fresh from wrestling Hogan) start us off, then hand on to Joey Styles & Taz(z) as they send it to the Smackdown pair, Cole & JBL.
The Hardy Boyz vs. Cade & Murdoch in a "Cade & Murdoch suck. There...I validated their wwe.com rant, even though I don't mean it." match for the World Tag Team Titles
Our champions make their way out first, as JR mentions it's their first PPV defense for 6 years. Cade & Murdoch follow, as JR brings up their wwe.com article. Not the Internet rant, but mentioning their mentioning of who trained each of them.
Matt & Lance start us off. They lock up, but it's quickly into the corner for a clean break. Hardy gets a headlock, taking Cade to the mat, where Matt gets a few 1 counts. Matt comes off the ropes into an elbow before Cade punching him down into the corner. Hardy fights back and gets a headlock, again taking the bigger man down. Cade drives Matt into his corner and Trevor tags in.
Matt ducked a Murdoch punch, gave him a body slam, fist drop and tagged his brother in. Jeff goes for a cover before they hit a double team move, bringing Matt back in. Jeff comes back in quickly and another double team follows. Whips are exchanged and Jeff just catches the Whisper IN The Wind, although Murdoch was too close. The heels find themselves on the outside, as Jeff jumps off his brother over the rope to the floor.
Matt rolls Murdoch back in for a second rope front elbow for a 2 count. Matt charges the corner, but Trevor avoids the bulldog, before bringin in Cade. Lance clubs Hardy down, before bringing Trevor back in. Trevor distracts the ref allow Cade a quick choke. Cade comes back in looking for a powerbomb, but it's reversed into a Russian leg sweep, allowing a tag to Jeff. Jeff whiffs a kick through the ropes, allowing Cade to pull him out the ring.
Cade rolls Jeff back in for a 2 count. Cade then hit a very nice sit-out uranage for 2. Trevor comes in, and they take a page out of the Hardyz book with Cade using Trevor as a weapon for a leg drop. Trevor works in a chinlock, and avoided a countering jawbreaker, hitting a neckbreaker of his own. Cade comes back in to club away on Jeffrey. A short-arm clothesline gets a pair of 2 counts. Trevor is tagged in, but Jeff blocks a suplex, getting a cradle for 2. Murdoch was up first though, hitting a boot ot the mouth.
Cade comes back in. Jeff slugs away, but Cade is too powerful. Trevor comes off the top with a knee drop and a quick tag. Cade kicks Jeff in the face, before snapmaring him into a chinlock.
Jeff fights out of it and hit the jawbreaker this time, but Cade make the tag to Murdoch who stopped Jeff from doing the same. A back suplex scored 2. Murdoch with clubbing crossfaces before bringing Cade back in. Jeff was sent into the ropes but kicked Trevor and then Cade down. However, Trevor knocked Matt off the apron before Jeff got there. Murdoch went up, but Jeff had the move scouted and managed to tag in Matt.
Matt went to work on Murdoch, hitting the charge/bulldog for 2. The brothers go for Poetry In Motion, but Cade pulled his boy out the way (although Jeff was botching it anyway). Matt got the Side Effect, but Cade came off the top to broke up the pin. Murdoch rolled over for a near 2.
Murdoch went for his Canadian Destoryer-like move again (better than RAW), but it only got 2. Murdoch hoisted Matt up, but he hit a near Twist Of Fate, which allowed Jeff to sneak in with a Swanton, allowing Matt to climb on top of Murdoch for the pin!
WINNERS & STILL CHAMPIONS: THE HARDY BOYZ
The brothers get to celebrate for a while (their music even looping through) before we go backstage where Umaga is psyching himself up. Shane gives him a pep talk more than Estrada has recently. Shane said all he need to do was listen and it'd be perfect. Vince appears WEARING A DOO-RAG. He asks if it's cool and Shane says yes. Vince said that tonight, a McMahon would become ECW Champion. People had asked which one it would be, and Vince's answer was that it would be Shane! Shane liked the sound of that. Shane said it was a generous offer, but after what Lashley did to Vince, he felt it should be Vince. Vince asked if he was sure. Vinny said he liked it.
Want to waste money on a poll? Well, the WWE are offering one on who you think will win the WWE Title 4 way...
Mickie James vs. Melina in a "Where's Victoria to take an accidental pinfall when you need her?" match for the Womens Title
The now 2-time champion comes out first, as Lawler (and even JR a little) gets horny. Mickie follows in her new style of attire. Those lovely short skirts may rest in peace.
They lock up, but Melina gets a hammerlock, but Mickie takes her down. Melina regains control with an arm wringer, but Mickie flips out of it. Mickie gets a headlock, taking her down, much like earlier. Melina gets a headscissors, but Mickie flipped out of that. A small "Mickie" chant starts, but Melina gets another headlock, which Mickie headscissors out of this time. But Melina didn't do no flipping. She just got out of it. Melina tried claiming a lost contact, but it was an obvious ruse. Well, not obvious to Mickie as she fell for it.
Then again, she did then drive Melina into the corner, where she hit a Monkey flip, before a few mounted punches got a 2. Mickie was sent to the corner, but a charge was countered, allowing Mickie to go up. Melina shoved her off the ropes though, senidng her crashing to the floor. The count was started, but she got in on 8. Mickei was "hair-mared" across the ring, before Melina got her choke in the ropes, but that was broken on four. Melina got a 2 count off that, before hitting a Full Nelson, but using her LEGS instead of her arms. Melina tried to pin her in that hold, but it got 2. Melina used the ropes for some leverage, but the ref caught her. Mickie caught a cradle, but for 2. Melina pulled Mickie into the corner for another choke. Mickie fought back, but Melina hit somehting of a seated senton, as Mickie teased a powerbomb.
A chin-cum-hammerlock was locked on, but Mickie fought out of it. Both women ended up doing the splits, where they slugged it out. Mickie hit a low dropkick when she got up for 2. Mickie hit a couple of clotheslines before a snapmaree and hair-mare. A neckbreaker scored 2.
Mickie was whipped into the corner, but she ended up hitting a cross body, but still only got a 2 count from it. Melina went up the corner, but she had to fight Mickie off. Melina then hit a reverse DDT for the clean win.
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: MELINA
We went backstage, where Maria had Edge (not in the biblical sense, of course). She wanted his thoughts. Edge said that he was happy he didn't have to face Orotn on RAW, as he's now refreshed, while Cena & HBK Knackered themselves by wrestling for an hour. Maria pulled a question out of her cleavage (I don't know either) to ask how he won his first title. Edge explained it fully. He asked her to explain who asked her to ask the question. Maria said "he" did. The he in question? MR. KENNEDY!!! KENNEDY! Kennedy teased to something similar to what Edge did when he won the title later on.
They than trail the Condemned. Well, it apparently needs the dollars...
MVP vs. Chris Benoit in a "Who needs to do anything different when it's that good to begin with?" match for the US Title
With RAW's bit of the undercard out the way, it's time for some Smackdown action. Cole & JBL have seemingly shut up to let us bask in the glory of MVP's entrance, as they stay quiet until Chimel's finished his blurb. Benoit gets the pseudo-hometown pop, since he's apparently from Atlanta nowadays.
A lock up goes from one side of the ring to the other and back again. MVP went for a leg in the corner, but was forced to break. MVP went kicks to Benoit's leg. MVP took a dive for Benoit's pins, but Benoit caught him. However Porter got a front facelock on Benoit. Benoit got out of it and hit a drop toe hold, tyring to the Crossface, but MVP was WAY too near the ropes. MVP teased taking a powder, but came back in the ring. MVP got a headlock takedown, as Cole DISSED THE SCOTTISH CHAMPION!!!!! I'm with Zah now!
Benoit hit some knees to the back, which allowed him to get a headscissors on MVP. He had it in tight too, as Porter had a problem getting out a first. MVP moved nicely into a pin, but Benoit managed to bridge out. After an exhange of pin chances, MVP was locked in the sharpshooter in the middle of the ring! However, MVP managed to crawl to the ropes. Porter was placed in the corner, where Benoit hit a few punches, but Porter reversed another whip, kicking Benoit in the back of the head as Benoit bounced out of the corner.
MVP put on a necklock, trapping the arm too. However, Benoit stood up and elbowed his way out of it, but MVP whipped Benoit to the ropes. However, after ducking a kick, MVP hit an overhead throw for 2. MVP tried to lock on a neck and arm lock again, but it was in the ropes already. After a kick to the back, Porter dragged Benoit into the middle of the ring as a disgraceful "Power Ranger" chant kicked in. Benoit came back with chops, and then after ducking a swing, Benoit hit the Triple Germans. Benoit moved to go up, but MVP had it scouted, grabbing the leg. Porter slingshotted Benoit onto the tope rope, getting a few 2's for Montel.
A neckbreaker got another 2. He then went for a suplex, but out of nowhere, Benoit locked in the Crossface, but awesomely, MVP made the bottom rope! Off a snapmare, MVP locked in a different neck/arm hold, before dropping to the mat, with the arm barred. However, the rope usage was obvious, so it had to be broken. A boot to the head got a 2 count. MVP went for the boot again, but Benoit ducked it, before hitting FIVE Germans. Benoit scrambled for the top rope to hit Air Benoit. However, MVP again had it scouted and turned around so Benoit hit knees.
Porter locked in a Half Boston Crab, and despite almost tapping, managed to make a rope. Porter went for a suplex, but Benoit counter with a Crossface, but MVP countered that. But then Benoit recountered with a small package with it getting a three!!! Great match once again.
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: CHRIS BENOIT
Todd Grisham was with John Cena. Todd asked Cena what his strategy would be, as Orton sauntered in. Randy said they had a lot in common. They were young, handsome and talented. He said guys like HBK get treated like royalty while they get treated like dirt. Orton proposed a union between the two, to take out HBK & Edge, leaving it down to them. Cena pondered that Orotn said he was handsome and that he wanted them to get together and he wouldn't take it lying down. Well, he did say it. Cena turned him down. Orton vowed to win it, albeit with another inadvertent innuendo.
DAMN! That's precisely what Ron Simmons said, as he was stood behind Randall.
Bobby Lashley vs. Umaga, Shane McMahon & Vince McMahon in a "3 on 1 is EXTREME~!" Handicap match for the ECW World Title
A video recapped everything form Wrestlemania to this point, ending with the visual of Vince wearing the ECW Belt. Justin Robert laid out the rules before Shane made his way out. Umaga followed, notably without Armando Estrada, who was selling the beating he took last week on ECW. Vince was last out with his patented gait in full force and Doo-Rag still on. Vince motivated Umaga as they awaited Bobby Lashley.
Lashley came out to a decent reaction. Scott Armstrong held back the trio from jumping Bobby. Shane volunteered to start off for his team. Lashley grabbed Shane and powered him down before powering him in the corner. Shane took a big time Spinebuster, but as Shane rolled out the ring, Lashley stared his other opponents down. Shane walked round to his corner and tagged in Umaga. Umaga whiffed a charge, allowing Lashley to punch away in the corner. Umaga powered Lahsley down though, as Joey pointed out that Umaga has only taken 2 pinfall losses, both because of Lashley. Lashley hit a clothesline in the corner, before clotheslining him over the top rope. Shane was then sent out as Lashlye wanted a bit of Vince. Vince was about to come in, but Umaga and then Shane tired coming in. Umaga was kicked off though, while Shane took a delayed vertical suplex. Umaga came back, but was dropped toe-holded into Shane.
Shane then low-bridged Lashley out. Vince took a cheap shot on the outside, before Umaga whipped Lashley into the steps. Back in the ring, Umaga hit a leg drop, before starting to working him over. Umaga raked Bobby's front and then his back. In the heel corner, Shane tagged himself in, who put knees to Bobby's ribs, before locking in a Fujiwara armbar, moving into a hammerlock, before driving in knees again. An armbar with headscissors followed. However, not only did Lashley get up but he also picked Shane up as well, powering Shane down for a 2 count, which Umaga had to break up.
Shane tagged Umaga in, holding Lashlye down for the Samoan to hit a falling headbutt. Umaga kicked Lashley in the ribs, before driving his foot into Lashley's throat. Umaga put on a bearhug.
Lashley looked to be fading, but a "bobby" chant started. Bobby elbowed out, but he was kicked in the back by Shane coming off the ropes, allowing Umaga to hit a Samoan Drop. Shane was tagged in again, where he went to work further on Lashley's back and ribs. Shane locked in a Camel Clutch. as a dueling "Let's go Bobby/Shane" chant got going. Interesting. However, Shane looked concerned. And with good reason. Lahsley stood up and drove Shane back-first into the corner, before hitting a T-Bone suplex followed by a couple of shoulderblocks. A press slam followed, before he hit Abyss's Shock Treatment. Lashley then speared Umaga out of nowhere. Shane was hit with the Dominator, but Vinny Mac broke it up. Vince realised where he was. Lashley picked Vince up, but Shane grabbed Bobby's leg and Umaga downed Bobby. With the referee distracted, Shane gave Lashley a belt shot upside the head. Vince demanded the tag, which Shane obliged with. However, the cover only got a 2 count.
Lashley rolled Vince up, but Shane broke it at 2. Vince tagged in Umaga, who hit the splash off the top. Vince was tagged back in again, but once again, Lashley kciked out at 2! Vince tagged Umaga again. Umaga went up and hit another splash off the top. Vince again was tagged in. But this time, it got the three count!!!
WINNERS: Vince McMahon, Shane McMahon & Umaga
NEW ECW WORLD CHAMPION: VINCENT KENNEDY McMAHON!!!!!
The McMahons shook hands with Umaga as the three celebrated, as Joey & Taz(z) pondered what it meant for the history of ECW, as they sat agog. Joey said it hurt his ears to hear the ring announcement. Vince ran round the ring and celrabted with the announcers.
Judgment Day promo.
A recap of Vince's ECW Title win. Where's Ron Simmons when you need him???
Backstage, the McMahon celebrated as they came across the ECW Originals. The four looked like they wanted to throw up, and RVD looked as if he was going to. The McMahon's mocked each of them, before launching their own "E-C-Dub" chant.
The Undertaker vs. Batista in a "Can Batista "follow that"?" Last Man Standing match for the World Heavyweight Title
We see a recap video of the situation between Batista & Undertaker, starting with a bunch of highlights of their Wrestlemania match, following through to the past week on Smackdown. Batista's music kicks in and the first thing the crowd does is boo. Although they then get excited when he comes out. Batista keeps his Dimaggio-like streak for missing his pyro cue going unabated...
Taker takes his sweet time coming out, which is probably a good thing for once, since we've got about an hour of show left. Taker booted batista down right away, following up with elbows. Into the corner, Taker threw a punch or 2, before whipping Batista into the corner. The charge was blocked though. After running the ropes, the chokeslam was teased, but Batista blocked it. However, Taker took Batista down again. Undertaker went for Old School early, and he got it. Taker stood Batista up and hit a few headbutts, but Taker was whipped off the ropes into a powerslam. Mickey Henson got to a count of 6. Things spilled outside, where Taker's head was hit off the barricade and then the apron. They went around the ring, where Taker reversed the position and bounced Batista's head off the steps. Henson got to 4, before Taker punched and kicked away at the apron, with Taker kicking the knee. Off the steps came Batista again, before kicking the knee again.
Batista fought back, but Taker stayed on the bad leg of Batista. Taker positioned Batista on the apron and kicked Batista in the head before climbing up on said apron, dropping the leg. The ref began a count. It got to 5 when a whip was reversed seind Undertaker into the steel steps. Batista rolled Taker back in the ring and went up top! Taker caught him though, and went up himself. Undertaker got the superplex, prompting another count. Both men got up at 8, before they slugged away at each other.
Batista came off the ropes with a clothesline. Henson reached an 8 count, but Batista was waiting with another clothesline for a 4 count. Batista slammed him down, and dropped the leg (his BAD leg mind you), getting a 6 count, but Taker pulled the second rope, seind ing Batistaa out. Taker cleared out the Smackdown announce table. However, taker whip was reversed, seding the Deamn into the barricade. Henson started a count, but it barely hit 4 before Batista picked him up. A powerslam was countered into a backbreaker. Taker got part of the steps and smacked Batista in the head with them. Henson started a count, as JBL claimed Batista had been busted up. 7 or so passed as Batista pulled himself up. Undertaker placed Batista on the announce desk as Cole & JBL moved. Undertaker climbed up on the barricade behind the desk and dropped the leg through the table!
Henson made a count, reaching NINE before Batista was ajudged to be up. Back in the ring saw Undertaker hit a couple of corner charges before hitting Snake Eyes. However, Batista hit a big spear out of nowhere. Six was counted, but Undertaker got up and was hit with a spinebuster. A five count followed. Batista, getting flustered, hit 2 more spinebusters. Taker got up at 9. Batista positioned for the Batista but was sent into the corner, where he came out and took a chokeslam!
Taker got up at 6, while Batista got up at 9. Taker mounted Batista in the corner, but Batista caught him with the Batista Bomb out of the corner. Undertaker collapsed at 5, but JUST made it up at 9! Batista left the ring and got himself a chair. He smacked it off Taker's head, before picking Taker up for another Batista Bomb. However, Daecon Dave was backdropped onto the specially placed chair. Undertaker called for and hit the Tombstone. Undertaker got up at 6 while Batista only just made it on both feet a 9.5. Batista was kicked out the ring, where he headed up the ramp. Taker followed, and they fought up the ramp. They teased tossing each other off the stage, but headed to the other side. Batista positioned for the Batista Bomb again, but Taker hit the bad leg.
Batista slipped out a powerslam and speared Taker off the stage onto boxes!!! An explosion happened and trussing fell down!!! HOLY DEFECATIONS, BATMAN!
Henson did his job and start a count! He made ten, and both men were out!
Tony Chimmel announced that since it was a draw, the title didn't change hands. However, Taker got up as his music hit. Batista soon followed.
WINNER: NO-ONE
STILL WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION: THE UNDERTAKER
Another Condemned promo. They REALLY need the money. They even try to claim it has critics raving...
John Cena vs. Edge vs. Shawn Michaels vs. Randy Orton in a "Well, this ain't gonna be an hour long..." match for the WWE Title
Cena won the text vote with half the vote. AT & T subcribers aren't dumb, quite clearly... Justin Roberts was back again, in his role of not-Lillian Garcia. Shame Joey & Taz(z) couldn't come back too, but I have a feeling that Joey is between vomiting in the toilet and crying on the phone with Paul Heyman...
HBK came out first, followed by Edge. Orton was third out, as JR made a side reference to what happened to Orotn saying controversy followed him, but talking about his in-ring career rather than anything that happened in any European hotel rooms. Cena's reaction was predictably mixed. But everyone was reacting, and that's why he's champ, folks.
And suddenly I relaise I might not be able to keep up with this.
They stand around taking in the LOUD crowd noise. HBK & Cena trash talked. Orton & Edge chimed in, prompting Cena & HBk to punch them in unison, although HBK sucker punched Cena. HBK chopped Cena in the corner, but a whip was reversed, with Cena hitting the Fisherman's suplex qas HBK came out the corner. Michaels hit a neckbreaker. Edge & Orton came in and dumped the other 2. Rated RKO squared off with each other. They traded punches, but Orotn got the better of it, hitting a dropkick. Edge left the ring, but Cena rolled Edge right back in. Orton then went to the outside and fought with Orton, but Cena took HBK down, only for Edge to knock Cena down. Edge whipped Orton into the ring steps, before body slamming Cena. Edge went for the same on Michaels, but it was reversed, HBK hitting his own. MIchaels then went up top and moonsaulted onto all of them.
Michaels rolled Edge back in the ring. They traded blows before clotheslining each other down. Cena climbed up top and hit a double legdrop on each of them as they stooped over. Cena got a 2 count on HBK, but he was taken down by Orton. Randy then dumped HBK and Edge. Orton & Cena slugged away, but Orton hit his backbreaker on Cena (and got CHEERED for it). The Orton Stomp followed, ending with a knee to the head.
Cena threw right hands, but Orotn ducked a charge, with Cena hitting his shoulder into the post. Michaels came in the ring, and chopped away on Orton. Michaels hit the fluing forearm and kipped up, but walked into a jumping heel kick from Edge for 2. Orton pulled Edge off and got 2 himself, Edge pulling Orton off.
They then decided to work together on Michaels, whipping him into the corner with authority. Cena climbed to the apron, but was sent into the ECW Announce table by Edge. Rated RKO continued to work over HBK. They took a leg each and locked in a half crab each. Very nice. HBK struggled to make the ropes, as Lawler & JR pondered who the winner would be. Michaels was pulle dback towards centre, but Cena came in from nowhere and hit a double throwback on Rated RKO! Cena took it to all three men. He hit the ProtoBomb on Edge before hitting the Five Knuckle Shuffle. However, HBK & Orton pulled him out and took him down. However, HBK then downed Orton!
Orton was alid across the RAW announce table. Michaels set for a piledriver, but Edge hit Michaels with a chair shot to the back. He then smacked Orton in the face with it. Edge spied Cena in the ring, but Cena got the drop toehold and locked in the STFU. With no-one to help Edge out, having knocked out his opponents, Edge had to make the ropes, which he managed to do. Orton came back in the ring, so Cena locked in the STFU on him instead. HBK came in, but he countered the STFU attempt into a roll up for 2. HBK knocked Cena down and gave atomic drops to everyone, dumping Edge & Orton. HBK went up top and hit the elbow on Cena.
Michaels tuned up the band, but had to side step and Edge spear. HBK wnet up top and hit the elbow on Edge. Then, when Orton came in, HBK figured to give him one too. However, Cena caught HBK. Cena got Michaels in position for an FU, but Rated RKO grabbed Cena and they did a "triangle of doom" spot.
Edge & Cena were left. The FU was countered twice. Then Cena picked HBK up as well for it, but he snuck out. Orotn came in and hit the RKO on HBK for 2. Edge then hit a DDT on Cena for 2. Edge primed for a spear, but he was sent into Orton. Orton went for an RKO was was pushed into Cena who pushed Orotn off into a spear. Edge then ate an FU and HBK hit the Sweet Chin Music on Cena!!! But Cena dropped on Orton! The referee made the count and got the three!!!!! Awesome finish!
WINNER & STILL CHAMPION: JOHN CENA
HBK was EXTREMELY pissed at what happened, as he had words with Cena. Things are getting damned toasty between the 2 of them.
OVERALL - 7.5/10 - A pretty good show overall. Really good final pair of matches. I'll reserve judgement on Vince's title win until I see where they go with it. I suspect he won't be long with the belt, and Lashley will have it back soon enough. MVP/Benoit was good stuff once again, but when will MVP get the belt, if at all? Mickie & Melina had a better match than I'd bet a lot of people will give them credit for. Because it was a good match. Certainly the best there has been since Tirhs & Lita left. I know that's not saying much, but this was comparable to their efforts, which is saying much. The opener was fine, if a little on the standard side. But then again, standard isn't always bad. Overall, there was maybe another gear to be had here, but absollutely nothing at all on this show sucked. You may not like the result of the ECW match, but it told a good story and had a somewhat logical outcome.
And ironically enough, I shall next see you with this week's ECW (although due to scheduling issues, it may be a little later than usual, maybe even on Thursday), so until then, for reading this, you're cooler than the other side of the pillow, I'm see you all later.
I'm Out.
