Mallory's Recap of The Ultimate Fighter 5 - The Save the Drama for Your Mama Episode
By Mallory Mahling
Last week viewers learned that real men do cry when Andy Wang lost his match with Brandon Melendez. A recap aired of Corey Hill and Gabe Ruediger's interaction with each other so far. It wasn't too hard to figure who would be fighting this week. At Team Penn's training session, B.J. said with four straight losses, his guys seemed to be the Bad News Bears. Assistant Coach Tony DeSouza was rapidly losing his sense of humor and was aggravated by the way Noah Thomas was joking around with him and not taking his training seriously. So Tony took a page out of Bob Holly's book and showed him just how serious the sport can be. Noah wasn't laughing when Tony got through with him. Gabe had gained even more weight and was concerned about being picked to fight this week. At the TUF House, an ice cream cake appeared, and Gabe made a beeline for it. He figured he could make the weight and a little piece of cake wouldn't hurt. (Famous last words of dieters everywhere.) The others were annoyed that Gabe did nothing but eat, which they considered unprofessional. At the UFC Training Center, Jens did the fight-picking honors in the absence of Dana White. It would be Corey Hill vs. Fat Gabe. Gabe had a prop ready and stood on a stool so he could be on Corey's level for the fighters' pose. It turned out this was the closest Fat Gabe got to a fight, but more about that later. Gabe figured since Corey had only had four fights, he had nothing to worry about. (Corey had won all four of those fights, however.) Then Gabe shared his strategy for getting ready for his fight. Not surprisingly, it wasn't too taxing. Nothing Gabe does ever seems to be too taxing. The others were ready to lock him in the sauna to make him get the weight off. Corey had weight concerns of his own and said he'd rather eat cheeseburgers and hot dogs while the others have their protein shakes. Corey dutifully got in the sauna and cut the necessary weight. At the training center, B.J. couldn't find Gabe. Gabe was finally found trying to sweat off the weight on a treadmill. B.J. had hopes that Gabe would be the one to turn it around for Team Penn. Gabe was 7 or 8 pounds over, and B.J. figured he could get it off. It seems Gabe has a sloth-like work ethic, and Rob Emerson said he was ready just in case he had to fill in for Gabe. Gabe got down to 162 and decided to go back to the house. B.J. got in the sauna with him, and made him stay busy. But Gabe was all about taking breaks. B.J. laughed at the way he was behaving. Gabe finally got out of the sauna and promptly collapsed. Gabe is a drama queen. B.J. got tired of dragging Gabe's butt around and told him to let him know if he didn't want to do this. B.J. felt he could still do it if he'd just "man up." Gabe took off his clothes and got in the pool. When he pulled himself out of the pool he collapsed like a beached whale--a nekked one--and B.J. started to chuckle at the Gabe's melodramatic antics. At the training center, it was time for the weigh in. Suddenly, Team Pulver got the bum's rush out of the building and were told to go back to the house. At the house, Gabe was begging the others to help him back into the sauna. By that time, his teammates were done with him and told him to get in the sauna by himself. The poor-me, "Camille" voice Gabe used was almost comical. When Team Pulver got back to the house, an ambulance was pulling away. Brian Geraghty had the line of the night when he said if Gabe was on "Celebrity Fit Club," he'd be awesome. No one in the house had much sympathy for Gabe, who had stayed at the hospital for a couple of hours and then returned to the house. His reception was ICY, to say the least. Gabe said he was getting more of a backlash than he was anticipating. He apologized to Corey about the fight. Corey was about the only one who was the least bit polite. Emerson told Gabe he was a waste of space, and Gabe complained that his team was treating him like a pariah. Duh! Back at the UFC Training Center, the teams gathered for a meeting. Gabe was still apologizing, this time to B.J. who didn't want to hear it. Gabe seemed oblivious to the fact that he'd really screwed up. He was also hoping he could stay on. Dream on, tubby. Dana was pissed, and a pissed off Dana White is not a good thing. Dana said Gabe had blown it and he was off the show and out of the house. Gabe took the walk of shame and then burst into tears. "This is my life," he said through his crocodile tears. As Gabe sniveled his way home, Dana said it made him sick. Nobody would be getting a free pass, so Corey would have to fight. That was fine with him. And Gabe's bad luck and turned out to be Rob Emerson's good luck, as Dana brought him back. Emerson would have another opportunity to win it all. As punishment for Team Penn not managing Gabe's weight, Team Pulver would get to pick the next two fights. The next two fights will be: Brian Geraghty of Team Pulver vs. Joe Lauzon of Team Penn; and Corey Hill vs. Rob Emerson. Emerson was grinning from ear to ear on the ride home. He looked like the happiest person in the world.
