You can text in your predictions on tonight’s Samoa Joe/Kurt Angle match. Why waste 99 cents when you can discuss the match over at the World Wrestling Insanity boards?
- Chase Stevens vs. Lance Hoyt- the newly disenfranchised Natural Chase Stevens is taking on the biggest enhancement talent in wrestling; Lance Hoyt! A quick win for Hoyt. When A.J. and Dale Torberg from the Chicago White Sox get in his face, he punches out Torberg. Unfortunately AJ lays him out with a steel chair. Back in the ring, Shane Douglas confronts Chase Stevens about wearing his former Naturals ring gear and losing. Douglas warns him but Chase Stevens is done being Douglas’ bitch and he gets in his face. Before things can go any further, TNA security shows up to break things out.
Jeremy Borash is backstage with Kurt Angle. Borash announces that the winner of tonight’s Iron Man match will get a title shot at the NWA Heavyweight Champion.
A hype video showcasing the major angles and matches of tonight’s PPV airs.
- LAST MAN STANDING MATCH “The Phenomenal” A.J. Styles vs. Rhino
Rhino waits in the ring for Styles but Styles doesn’t seem eager to get in the ring with the War Machine., Rhino chases Styles into the ring and starts the beating he’s been itching to dish out to Styles. Styles tries to trade blows with Rhino but it’s a lost cause. Realizing his error, he turns to wrestling then uses a piece of tape to choke Rhino. Don West and Mike Tenay discuss Styles’ change of attitude and trace it back to the beating he and Christopher Daniels took at the hands of the Latin American Exchange. Rhino makes the first ten count. The two continue beating each other down but Rhino lands a spinebuster that allows him to get a three count. The referee starts the ten count but Styles answers it. Three counts are meaningless except for the purpose of starting the three count on your opponent. Styles gets his wind back and tries to powerbomb Rhino off the top rope. Rhino tries to force his way out but Styles uses the momentum to land a Sunset Flip off the top rope and sink Rhino into the mat. It’s not enough for a three count though and both men resume the battle to beat their foe senseless. Rhino goes outside the ring and grabs a table from underneath the ring. As Rhino sets up the table, Styles sneaks up on him and crotches him on the table. Styles brings things back in the ring and flies off the top rope with a forearm shot that knocks down the War Machine. Rhino catches Styles off the ring ropes and powerbombs Styles. Things are going back and forth as Styles lands the Pele kick out of nowhere. It’s obviously not enough as Rhino lands the Gore on Styles. As Styles tries to get up, Rhino sets up to deliver another Gore. Styles is too weak to stop Rhino and falls to a second Gore. Referee Earl Hebner starts the ten count and Rhino sets up more tables outside the ring. Styles looks like he’s about to answer the count when he looks up at Rhino and sits down. Apparently, Styles isn’t going to continue the match and allow Rhino to beat him up any further.
WINNER: Rhino
Styles bails out of the ring and Rhino grabs the microphone. He promises to end things tonight and finish Styles off. Rhino chases Styles down the entrance ramp to the back area. Rhino then delivers a piledriver to Styles on the metal floor. Things aren’t looking good for Styles! Rhino brings a table back towards Styles and props it up against the entranceway to the Impact Zone. Rhino goes to Gore Styles through the table but Styles has enough energy to dodge it and Rhino misses, striking the table instead of Styles.
HYPE VIDEO airs for Daniels/Sabin/Lynn match
TNA’s blond bombshell is backstage interviewing 43 year old Jerry Lynn. Lynn takes her comments the wrong way and asks her if she’s insinuating that he’s old. Lynn runs down the snot nose punk Sabin and warns Daniels he will be calling him teacher at the end of the match.
- X Division Championship Match Chris Sabin vs. Jerry Lynn vs. Christopher Daniels (Champion)- Chris Sabin gets tossed out of the ring leaving Daniels and Lynn to square off. Sabin rejoins them and the ring looks like a human ball of energy as Sabin, Lynn, and Daniels are exchanging lightning fast moves. Daniels finds himself out of the ring and Sabin goes on the offensive against Lynn. Daniels tries to get back in the ring but Sabin knocks him out. Lynn launches some offense of his own and downs Sabin as Daniels gets back in the ring and attacks Lynn. Sabin dives on both competitors and then tosses Lynn out of the ring. All three wrestlers obviously know they have to eliminate one opponent in order to score a pin or submission on the remaining wrestler. With Lynn out of the picture, Sabin goes to work on Daniels. He puts Daniels in the Tree of Woe and lands the hesitation dropkick on him. Sabin goes for the pin but Lynn finally makes it back into the ring and breaks things off. Lynn begins a clinic on Daniels and Sabin, hitting both men simultaneously with a missile dropkick. Lynn is on fire! Tenay and West remind the fans that the last time Lynn held the X Division title was in December of 2002. Lynn hits a sit-out powerbomb on Sabin and goes for the pin. Lynn looks to have Sabin down for three but Daniels breaks the pin at the last second. Another near-fall by Lynn as he pins Daniels only to have Sabin break things up. Lynn levels Daniels with a cradle piledriver and goes for the pin but the crafty Sabin rolls up Lynn and uses the tights to gain a three-count and the X Division Championship.
WINNER: Chris Sabin (New X Division Champion!)
Jeremy Borash is backstage interviewing the man who launched the Paparazzi Challenge Series, Kevin Nash. Things have come down to two final competitors-Austin Starr and Alex Shelley. Nash is interrupted by the judge for the Paparazzi Championship Series; Mr. Bob Backlund and Nash engage in a rambling WTF promo with Backlund playing the crazy man but in the end just wasting time. After the awful promo, Eric Young reminds Jeremy Borash he was supposed to go shopping with him. Young greets Backlund and calls him Mr. President, letting Backlund know that he voted for him in 1995.
Video recap of the Paparazzi Championship Series.
Kevin Nash joins Mike Tenay and Don West at the announce table. The three judges for the PCS make their way to ringside where they will be observing the final match.
Samolian Joe
Big Fat Oily Guy
Bob Backlund
- FINALS PAPARAZZI CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES: Alex Shelly vs. Austin Starr: Tenay suggests that Kevin Nash set up the PCS to help show the character of the X Division stars. Tenay and Nash reminisce on Nash’ WWF title win over Bob Backlund back in the day. Back and forth encounter until Starr takes Shelly down with a stiff clothesline. Shelly can’t seem to make a comeback with Shelly tossing him out of the ring. Starr takes a few moments to try and sway one of the judges. This allows Shelly to regain his senses and he goes on the offensive. Beautiful suicide dive by Shelly outside the ring to Starr. Shelly humiliates Starr by dropkicking him in the ass. Shelly goes for an Acidf Drop but Starr blocks it and clotheslines Shelly. Starr goes to the top rope but a moment of showboating gives Shelly enough time to knock him off. Shelly DDT’s Starr and goes for the pin. Starr kicks out with just one minute remaining in the match. Starr puts Shelly in the Camel Cluth but with less than 15 seconds left, Shelly manages to hold out. It’s now up to the judges to decide on the winner. Jeremy Borash takes the votes and announces the scores as follows:
Samolian Joe: Austin Starr
Fat Naked Oily Guy: Alex Shelly
Before Borash can read Backlund’s score, Mr. Backlund enters the ring and makes a breakdown of his score based on various factors such as conditioning, positioning, etc. The fans quickly sour on Backlund’s rambling promo .
Bob Backlund: DRAW
The last word will have to come from Kevin Nash. Nash tells Borash that since the judges couldn’t make a decision, they will go into a five minute overtime. Alex Shelly wastes no time and in less than thirty seconds, he rolls up Starr for the pinfall victory.
WINNER: Alex Shelly
Alex Shelly raises the PCS Trophy high as Jay Lethal and Sonjay Dutt raise him up on their shoulders. Senshi looks on indifferently. Starr is disgusted at the results and gets in Kevin Nash’ face. Nash piefaces Starr and Senshi tries to break things up. Starr gets on the stick and says he didn’t come up to TNA play games or help Nash revive his career. The only man in the ring he respects is Senshi. He asks Senshi to leave the ring but Senshi isn’t going anywhere. Starr makes the mistake of slapping Senshi in the face and gets knocked out of the ring for his trouble. Starr’s stupidity continues as he gets in Backlund’s face. Starr turns his back on Backlund only to get put in the Chickenwing by Backlund.
Decent match ruined by too much focus on the judges and Kevin Nash. That pretty much sums up the whole PCS.
- “Tennessee Cowboy” James Storm (w. Gail Kim) vs. “Canadian Destroyer” Petey Williams: Gail Kim reluctantly accompanies Storm to ringside. With Chris Harris out of action (due to his eye injury), Gail Kim’s options for her meal ticket are slim. Tenay and West announce that so far, the fans are picking Samoa Joe to win the Iron Man match with 60% of the vote. Storm controls most of the match but Williams starts to get some offense in and gets two near-falls. Storm sets up Williams for the superkick but Williams ducks. Williams goes for the Canadian Destroyer but it’s obviously too early as Storm slips out and pins Storm’s shoulders to the mat, using the rope for extra leverage.
WINNER: James Storm
After the match, Williams tells the referee that Storm used the ropes. Williams pleads with Kim to tell the ref that Storm cheated but she’s reluctant to do so. As Williams argues his case, Storm blindsides him. Storm handcuffs Williams to the ropes and goes to blast him with the beer bottle but Gail Kim stops him. Kim gives a lowblow to Storm and turns the tables on the Tennessee Cowboy. Before she can break the beer bottle over his head, she’s attacked from behind by Jacqueline (not to be confused with Ms. Jackie).
Decent match but the post-match brawl was more interesting than the match itself.
VIDEO airs showcasing the Voodoo Kin Mafia’s campaign against Vince McMahon.
The Voodoo Kin Mafia are in the ring. B.G. James says the VKM is in the ring to declare victory against Vince McMahon and the WWE. He runs down the list of the things they did to the WWE such as appearing at Titan Towers, “ambushing” Paul Levesque, and their Million Dollar Challenge and points out that the WWE never responded to them. After wishing Triple H a fast recovery, he mocks the recent Rosie/Trump match on RAW and reminds McMahon of the “TNA” chants that broke out during the match. B.G. James says that while the war with VKM is over, there’s still a war going on with McMahon waging war on the wrestling fans. He berates McMahon for insulting the intelligence of the wrestling fans. He invites the fans to stick their heads out the window and yell “We’re not gonna take it”. The fans in the Impact Zone join in as B.G. finishes things by proclaiming there’s a new sheriff in town and it’s name is TNA.
Just when things look to be over, Christy Hemme comes down to ringside and interrupts the VKM. She has something to say, even if it means she’ll be fired. Hemme says she’s been watching the VKM and points out that no one has mentioned Joanie Lauer’s (Chyna) role as foundation for DX. Hemme brings up Lita’s name and then asks why women are so disposable in wrestling. She says she wants to wrestle too and be part of this business. A “We want wrestling’ chant breaks out as Hemme loses her way with the promo. She says women deserve respect as the fans shit all over her with a boring chant. Hemme goes to leave the ring as BG James invites her back in the ring. James lends a sympathetic ear to Christy before Kyp James browbeats her and warns her not to interrupt him ever again. B.G. James tries to calm Kyp down but Hemme is the one who’s irate now. She slaps Kyp James in the face and then proceeds to storm out of the ring. With Jacqueline in TNA and mention made of Lita, could this be the harbinger for a Woman’s Division in TNA?
INTERVIEW:Jeremy Borash is backstage with Team 3D (Brother Ray and Brother Devon). Brothey Ray says this is a battle between old school and youth. He says the Latin American Exchange (LAX) took out Brother Runt so they took out Konnan. Ray points out that this is the first time the LAX will be wrestling without Konnan at their side.
Sting steps up and asks Jeremy Borash if he’s seen Abyss.
VIDEO recap airs of the budding war between Team 3D and the LAX.
- NWA World Tag Team Championship: Team 3D (Brother Ray & Brother Devon) vs. Champions Latin American Exchange (Hernandez and Homicide)
The powerhouses from each team square off as Brother Devon and Hernandez start the match. Hernandez doesn’t get anything accomplished in the ring so he tags out. Brother Devon follows suit and tags in Brother Ray. Ray takes an early lead against Homicide, powering his way to control of the match. He tags in Devon and they execute a double team maneuver on Homicide. Hernandez tags in and he and Devon start a brief war of chops. The LAX start making quick tags to try and gain control but nothing’s working. Brother Ray unloads with chops and punches before he throws Homicide out of the ring. Brother Ray’s weight advantage is too much for Homicide as he shoves Homicide into the ring barrier several times. However his offense looks to have tired him out and he makes the tag to Brother Devon. While the LAX are getting some offense in, Team 3D is dominating the match. Team 3D deliver further punishment to the LAX as they hit the “What’s Up” on Hernandez followed by a 3D on Homicide. Brother Runt shows up in his Santa Claus suit. He’s obviously drunk. He climbs the top rope and dives after Homicide. Brother Runt’s interference forces referee Rudy Charles to disqualify Team 3D. Brother Ray is pretty irate and he tosses Runt out of the ring.
WINNER: LAX by disqualification
Not much of a match and definitely not much of a finish…
The final results for the fan vote are in! 57% of the fans have picked Samoa Joe as the winner for tonight’s Iron Man match.
INTERVIEW: Jeremy Borash interviews Samoa Joe about his upcoming Iron Man match against Kurt Angle. Joe says Angle has made this personal so he promises Angle 30 minutes of punishment and to break him.
HYPE VIDEO airs for the Joe/Angle feud.
- 30 minute IRON MAN MATCH: Samoa Joe vs. Kurt Angle:
Mike Tenay reminds the fans that TNA authority figure Jim Cornette has ruled that the winner of this match will get a NWA Heavyweight Championship title match at February’s Against All Odds PPV. Both men take a few seconds to size each other up before Angle lunges at Joe. The fans seem split on who they’re cheering for. Angle lands the first real move by putting Joe in an armbar, turning it into a side headlock. Irish whip into the ropes with Joe knocking Angle down with a shoulderblock. Angle takes a breather by bailing out of the ring. Knowing he has to face Joe for thirty minutes, that’s not such a bad idea. Angle launches Joe into the ropes but again, Joe knocks him down with the shoulderblock. Once again, Angle bails out of the ring. Joe and Angle bounce off the ropes again but this time Angle knocks Joe down, using a diving shoulderblock. Angle doesn’t slow down and lands some forearm uppercuts to Joe, knocking him down in the ring. Joe fires back with a clothesline though and lands some punches to Angle. Joe goes for the first pin and gets a two count on Angle. Front facelock on Angle by Joe. Angle backs Joe into the corner and doesn’t give him a clean break. Angle targets ngle Joe’s knee, landing several kicks to Joe’s left leg followed by a breakway suplex.
Angle goes to wear Joe down some more, landing a side suplex on Joe. He then takes the big man down with a side headlock. Joe may be known as “The Samoan Submission Machine” but Angle is obviously no stranger to submission wrestling. Nine minutes into the match, Angle seems in control with the headlock until Joe finally makes his way to the ropes for a break. Angle continues though with more forearm uppercuts and kicks. Joe fights back though with a series of punches then launches Angle through the ropes. Joe could take a breather but he decides to continue his offense by diving through the ropes at Angle. Unfortunately Joe didn’t catch Angle clean and looks to have hit his head on the ring barrier. Powerslam by Joe. Angle is far from through though and surprises Joe with a breakaway suplex. Thirteen minutes in, Joe goes for the musclebuster but Angle rolls out and tries to pin Joe. However Joe slips on the Kokina Clutch. Around fourteen minutes into the match, Angle taps out. It looks like Angle tapped out early to avoid further punishment from Joe.
Down one fall to none, Angle goes back to trying to wear Joe down. Given Joe’s stamina, that might not be the best strategy with Angle down a fall. However, sixteen minutes into the match, Angle applies the Ankelock and Joe quickly taps out. It’s obvious now that both wrestlers don’t want to sustain any longterm damage as this match is one of attrition.
With twelve minutes remaining, Angle goes to wear Joe down with headlocks and forearm smashes. Joe goes for a suplex but Angle blocks it and forces Joe to the ground with the anklelock. Again, Joe quickly taps out. With eleven minutes left, Angle is up two falls to one.
Both men are weary but Angle seems a little less so. Angle backs Joe into the corner and continues punishing Joe with uppercut forearms. Angle whips Joe into the corner but somehow Joe finds the energy to rebound with a clothesline. Flurry of punches and chops to Angle. Joe lands a devastating knee to Angle’s jaw. Joe goes for the musclebuster but Angle slips out and lands an Olympic Slam on Joe. Nearfall on Joe. Anklelock on Joe but Joe gets out. Joe finally lands the musclebuster. With seven and a half minutes left, Joe gets the pin. Things are tied 2-2.
“Joe’s gonna kill you” chants break out but Angle’s not dead yet. Angle clips Joe in the knee and sharply follows up with the anklelock, this time in the center of the ring. Joe powers out and goes after Angle but Angle shifts gears and rolls up Joe for the pinfall with just five minutes left. Angle is up 3 falls to Joe’s 2.
Down three falls to two and with just five minutes left, Joe is in desperation mode. The action spills outside the ring but quickly returns to the ring (that’s the only place to win after all). With less than three minutes left, Angle makes what could be a pivotal move by blasting Joe’s leg into the ringpost. Joe is undaunted though and continues his offense. Joe lands the musclebuster again and goes for the pin. With ninety seconds left, Angle gets his foot on the rope, breaking up the pin. Joe slips out of the ankelock and struggles to land the Kokina Clutch on but Angle is slipping out. With thirty seconds left, Joe tries something different and applies the anklelock. As the clock ticks to zero, Angle holds out and wins the match.
WINNER: KURT ANGLE 3 falls to 2
Excellent match.
INTERVIEW: Sting talks with Jeremy Borash about his campaign to help Abyss find redemption. Sting tells Borash that it’s hard for Abyss to change with the devil following him around. James Mitchell, accompanied by Abyss; warns Sting that the end times are near for him. Sting grabs Mitchell by the throat as Abyss and delivers his own warning.
VIDEO: Recap of the circumstances leading up to tonight’s elimination match between Sting, Abyss, and Christian Cage for the NWA Heavyweight Championship.
- NWA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP ELIMINATION MATCH: Christian Cage (w. Tomko) vs. Sting vs. NWA Champion Abyss (w. “Father” James Mitchell) Before the match begins, TNA authority figure Jim Cornette has TNA security lock Tomko up in a cage so he can’t interfere in the match. Mike Tenay and Don West outline the rules: if you’re pinned or submit, you’re out until there’s one person standing. The NWA champion Abyss wastes no time in taking things to both Sting and Christian. Abyss takes Sting out and focuses on Christian, landing the Shock Treatment on Christian Cage early on in the match. James Mitchell signals Abyss to hit the Black Hole Slam but it’s a little too early. Cage goes for a desperation move diving off the top rope but Abyss brushes it off, chokeslamming Cage and nearly getting the pin on Cage. Outside the ring, Tomko reaches out of the cage to choke Sting. Referee Rudy Charles goes outside to try and break things up as Abyss lands the Black Hole Slam on Cage. Cage is down for the three count but there’s no referee to make the count. Abyss and Mitchell go to bring the referee back in the ring. Abyss goes for a chokeslam on Cage but Cage goeto the eyes, stunning Abyss. Sting shows up out of nowhere and hits the Scorpion Death Drop on Abyss, surprising the champion and getting a pinfall. Abyss is none too please and goes after the Stinger. Mitchell urges him to finish Sting off but Abyss is reluctant to do so and walks away. In the meantime, Christian Cage goes after Sting, no doubt aware that he or Sting will be the new NWA champion. Cage unloads on Sting but the Stinger makes his Superman comeback. Stinger Splash dazes Cage but Cage dodges a second one. Cage fails to capitalize though and Sting lands a powerful superlex on Cage. Nearby, James Mitchell has returned to ringside. Sting places Cage in the Scorpion Deathlock as Mitchell lays out the referee near Tomko and frees Tomko. As Mitchell distracts the referee, Tomko levels Sting. Cage goes for the pinfall but Sting somehow kicks out. This time Cage distracts the referee, hoping Tomko can lay out Sting. This time Sting is ready and he sends Tomko out of the ring. Abyss shows up and takes care of Tomko, locking him back in the cage. Sting hits the Unprettier on Cage but Cage lifts his shoulder up at the last minute. Sting goes to clothesline Cage but misses and hits the referee. Mitchell blindsides Sting with a cane but it has little effect. Abyss goes to stop Mitchell and then shocks Sting by blasting him with the chain. Christian Cage wastes no time and covers Sting for the 1-2-3.
WINNER: Christian Cage (New NWA Champion)
