Mallory's Recap of The Ultimate Fighter 5 - Episode 6

Last week viewers learned what a wuss Fat Gabe turned out to be. He was supposed to fight Corey Hill, but couldn't (or wouldn't) make weight, so a disgusted Dana White banished Gabe from TUF, UFC and his sight.

Gabe's bad luck and turned out to be Rob Emerson's good luck, as Dana brought him back. Emerson will have another opportunity to win it all.

And as punishment for Team Penn not keeping a better eye on Gabe's weight, Team Pulver got to pick the next two fights: Brian Geraghty of Team Pulver vs. Joe Lauzon of Team Penn; and Corey Hill vs. Rob Emerson.

This week there were two fights to make up for no fights last week.

Of Joe Lauzon, Dana White said "he looks like a nice, nerdy Internet kid, but he can rip you f'n head off." He'd pretty much done just that to Jens Pulver in Pulver's highly touted return to UFC last year. Some called it a fluke, but Lauzon called it preparation.

Brian Geraghty hoped Joe would burn himself out early; he was looking forward to the fight.

Of his loss to Lauzon, Pulver said that Joe had done his job and Pulver had forgotten to bring his game. He didn't want to hate on anybody.

On fight day, Lauzon said he thought Brian was an underdog. Brian seemed to be the more experienced fighter, however. Both were confident they'd win.

(1) Brian Geraghty vs. Joe Lauzon. The fight didn’t last long, as Lauzon came out "like a beast" according to Dana. He slammed Brian, then unloaded on him with fists and elbows, finally ending the fight with a rear naked choke. Brian tapped out, and Team Penn FINALLY got a win.

After the fight, Brian said he wished he could have that minute back. He was embarrassed by his performance.

Dana said that the team that wins the second fight will have control of the fight selection.

Rob Emerson noted that there was some pressure on him, but he was looking forward to the fight and intended to have fun with it. There was a lot riding on the fight and Corey was standing in his way.

Jens and Corey were walking around Las Vegas talking while the rest of the team jogged after them. Corey said he had quit his job and overcome too much to get on the show.

Corey had to cut weight again, and he said he would not quit. Corey was 6 foot 4 and down to 155 pounds by the weigh-in.

Just an observation--thongs are not a good look for these guys.

(2) Rob Emerson vs. Corey Hill. Corey was aggressive at the beginning. but finally backed off. His 5-inch reach advantage came into play and the two stood and traded for the entire round. B.J. was very vocal from the corner. Toward the end of the round, Corey took control again.

Round two saw a more aggressive Emerson and I'd give him the second round. He nearly submitted Corey with a leg-lock before the bell rang.

It went to a third, sudden-victory round. Both seemed a little tired, but at least Emerson was throwing the occasional kick. Corey didn't look too imposing.

Dana said neither one had looked impressive, but he'd give it to Emerson, although Emerson had been "fighting not to lose and not fighting to win."

The judges gave the win to Corey Hill.

This was Corey's first professional fight. Dana said they'd done some checking when he'd applied for TUF, but he had so much raw talent, they'd put him on the show anyway.

Next week: B.J. kicks one of the members off his team. Also, next week will feature two fights.
