10/10 Velocity Review: Kevin Peel's Debut

WWE has a pretty neat concept going for
Velocity, now a show that can be seen on WWE.com in
streaming video form. It has the same kind of Velocity
action you're used and comes now commercial free. The
nice thing about the new format is they have it broken
down into four segments and you can just watch the segments
that interest you or avoid a segment that might not
interest you. This way you're not stuck skipping to
the good parts.
This week's edition of Velocity features
Mr. Kennedy and MNM in action and also a cruiserweight
battle royal that will determine the number one contender
who will get a title shot against Nunzio tonight at
No Mercy.
(1) MNM (w/ Melina) defeated Jared
Steele and Jass Plisken
Segment number one opens with the Velocity
intro and that familiar theme of MNM plays over the
speakers as Josh Matthews and Steve Romero welcome us
to Velocity. The Melina ring entrance never gets old.
This week MNM take on Jared Steele and Jass Plisken
(not sure if that name's right). Just seeing MNM reminds
me how unbelievable it seems that Animal and Heidenreich
have been champs this long. The announcers put over
the six person tag team match at No Mercy where it will
be Joey, Johnny and Melina taking on Heidenreich, Animal
and Christy Hemme. Joey gives Steele a jawbreaker followed
by the photograph sign and a dropkick. He crawls over
to Melina for a kiss. Steele came back with some right
hands, but that was cut short with a clothesline from
Joey who drags him to the corner. Joey misses with the
driving forearm off the top which enables Steele to
make the tag. Announcers are confused how you say this
jobber's name. Joey takes control and makes the blind
tag before doing a Curt Hennig style neck whip followed
by Johnny coming in with a legdrop. Nice. This was of
course the setup for their finisher The Snapshot. 1-2-3
and that's it.
THE VERDICT:
Basic squash match. If you're a fan of
MNM you'll enjoy it, if you aren't there really isn't
much else here.
(2) Mr Kennedy defeated Russell
Simpson
Segment two opens up with the slam of
the week featuring Mr Kennedy hitting Hardcore Holly
with a microphone last week. Tony Chimmel reluctantly
introduces him and Kennedy informs him that he makes
him absolutely sick. Kennedy tells him to get out of
his ring, but before he leaves, Kennedy finds a jelly
doughnut in his pocket and stuffs it in his mouth and
calls him "fatty." Kennedy informs us that
match is scheduled for one fall with a twenty minute
time limit and he weighs in at "an absolutely astonishing
245 pounds." This guy's character is just fantastic.
It's nice to see one of the new guys showing alot of
personality. Not much to the match. A quick squash that
Kennedy won with the Lambeau Leap. Afterwards, he announced
himself the winner.
THE VERDICT:
This segment is definitely worth checking
out. There wasn't much to the match, but Kennedy's whole
prematch rountine is just fantastic and his verbal abuse
of Chimmel is always great.
Segment three opened up with a recap of
the 6-man match from Smackdown with the main focus being
on Eddie Guerrero and Batista. They always do a good
job with the video recaps. The build to Batista/Eddie
still seems very strange. From this, we go to Simon
Dean. He has a cast on his right arm selling injuries
from Bobby Lashley. Simon tells us he has living proof
that the simon system really works. He brings out a
blonde girl named Natalie who Simon claimed was 350
pounds before using the simon system. She takes off
her No Mercy shirt and shows her fitness look.
THE VERDICT:
Unless you want to see the Batista/Eddie
recap video, this segment should be avoided. There was
absolutely no point to the Simon Dean segment. It was
just his usual routine. Nice looking girl, but unless
they were introducing her as his valet, I didn't see
much of a point.
(3) Juventud won a cruiserweight
battle royal to earn the no mercy title shot
Fourth and final segment and its main
event time. This is a seven man cruiserweight battle
royal with a shot against Nunzio for the Cruiserweight
title at No Mercy on the line. The match featured Scotty
2 Hotty, Funaki, Brian Kendrick, Paul London, as well
as Super Crazy, Psychosis, and Juvy of the mexicools.
Nunzio came out at the top of the ramp to watch. Brian
Kendrick clothesline Psychosis out of the ring for the
first elimination. Funaki threw Juvi over the top but
he slip back under the bottom rope to stay in the match.
Later, Funaki goes for a tornado ddt on Super Crazy,
but Crazy countered by throwing his out over the top
to eliminate him. Kendrick threw Scotty over the top,
but he skinned the cat and came back in only to be met
with a Super Crazy clothesline over the top to eliminate
him. With Crazy against the ropes, London irish whipped
Juvi who was backed dropped by Crazy over the top, but
Juvi caught the rope and landed on the ring apron. Juvi
and Crazy argued and London dropkicked Crazy into Juvi,
but Juvi pulled down the top rope sending Crazy to the
floor eliminated. With it down to three, Kendrick Jumped
on the second rope while he had Juvi in the corner,
but London snuck up from behind and eliminated Kendrick.
This left only London and Juvi. London hit the mushroom
stomp off the top then kept trying to eliminate Juvi,
but Juvi kept escaping. London tried a springboard dropkick
but was met with a dropkick from Juvi. London got Juvi
in a fireman's carry and tried to eliminate Juvi going
to each rope, but Juvi kept escaping. London turned
it into a death valley driver. He threw Juvi out to
the ring apron once again. Juvi brought London out to
the ring apron on the other side of the ringpost. Juvi
caught London in a powerbomb position but London fought
his way out. After a leg sweep, both men lost their
footing holding only the top rope. London tried climbing
to the top but was kicked off by Juvi falling to the
floor. Juvi was declared the winner.
THE VERDICT:
Great match. This is the one segment you
should definitely check out. It started out as your
basic battle royal stuff, but when it got down to Juvi
and London it got really good. Just great back and forth
action and I was kinda surprised that Juvi won in the
end.
OVERALL
Overall a pretty good edition of Velocity.
The final segment and the Kennedy segment are really
worth checking out. The MNM match was what it was and
I have no idea what the point of the Simon Dean segment
was. I really do like this online concept for Velocity.
It will be a good way to showcase some of the upcoming
talent and with the smackdown roster you're always gonna
get some cruiserweight action thrown in there.
