TNA VICTORY ROAD 2006
July 16, 2006 - Orlando, FL

A 25-minute Jeff Jarrett/Max Headroom-style video opened the show.  He talked and talked and talked, but absolutely nothing redeeming, interesting, or entertaining came out.

1) Elix Skipper & David Young vs. The Naturals (w/ Shane Douglas)

The Franchise ripped on the new ECW and Ric Flair a bit before the match.  Nothing crazy.  Douglas introduced "his" team, and swore on Chris Candido that "the newly franchised" Naturals had transformed and would shoot to the top of TNA.  Both men came out looking exactly the same as they had before.  Actually, their hair was a little shorter.  They must've compromised with the office.  I still say they should've gone all the way.

Shane Douglas left the Impact Zone when the match began.  The finish came when Andy Douglas scored the pin after a double-team-top-rop-dropkick-powerbomb move.

Winners: The Newly Franchised Naturals

After the match, Shane Douglas came out and berated Stevens and Douglas.  He thought they could do better.  Both men headed to the back with their heads down as a barking Douglas followed them up the ramp.

Backstage with Jeremy Borash, Christian Cage talked about bringing the "old" Christian back.  He compared Sting to expired milk.  Very heelish.

(And, for the record, I publicly suggested that TNA turn Christian heel about two months ago.  It was all my idea.  TNA owes me a check.)

2) "The Alpha Male" Monty Brown vs. "The War Machine" Rhino

Rhino charged the ring and went right after Monty.  The ref went down early in this one, and the two heavyweights battled around ringside.  The match was ultimately declared a "no contest" because the referee was incapacitated.

Winner: Draw/Double DQ/No Contest

Backstage, Konnan and LAX spit mad flava, holmes.  They said that all the whiteboys who don't speak Spanish better learn quick, 'cause they're taking over.  It's good thing I know Spanish, um... amigo.

LAX/Jim Cornette video package.

3) LAX  (w/ Konnan) vs. Ron Killings & Sonjay Dutt

LAX entered through their own special Latino entrance as "Moody" Jack Melendes (Spanish announcer) introduced them en Espanol.

The match itself was fast-paced and exciting, with Homicide and Dutt standing out the most.  Killings also looked good, hitting a nasty-looking vertical suplex into a Stone Cold Stunner at one point.

The finish came when the huge "Hernandez" absolutely murderlized Sonjay Dutt by throwing him completely across the ring from a Razor's Edge position.  Dutt sailed through the air for what seemed like an eternity before finally crash-landing on the back of his neck.  Holy shit!

Match of the night so far.

Winners: Hernandez & Homicide (LAX)

Backstage, Scott Steiner called Samoa Joe a "fat bastard" and made other assorted fatty jokes.  It was actually pretty funny.  He said he didn't care if he had to fight Jarrett for the title next month.  Oh, and he hates Canadians.  He mentioned ZAH specifically.

The former members of Team Canada came out dressed in Johnny-Ace-approved business-casual attire for one last appearance.  Scott D'Amore ran down Jim Cornette and complained about TC being disbanded.  He told "The Canadian Enforcer" Bobby Roode that he was the hottest free agent in wrestling and wished him luck.  Roode left the arena.  The crowd chanted "Eric Young".  Next, D'Amore praised Petey Williams, hugged him, and sent him off.  "I love you, kid."  The announcer were touched.  Don West dead-panned, "I didn't think he had a soul."  High-larious!  Next up was A-1.  The crowd chanted "you can't wrestle".  A-1 eventually left, leaving a petrified Eric Young alone in the ring with D'Amore.  The crowd chanted "Super Eric" for some reason.

D'Amore bitched out Eric and blamed him for Team Canada's failures.  Scott said that Eric was just a big ol' fat kid when he found him.  D'Amore turned him into a wrestler and gave him a job, and Young went and screwed it all up.  The crowd was aching to see Young give it to his former coach.  D'Amore demanded that Eric give him back the Team Canada pants and jacket.  D'Amore screamed right in Eric's face as he stood there in his underwear and mis-matched socks.  Scott belted out, "Pretty soon Eric, your ass is gonna be FIRED!" before leaving.

Eric picked up the microphone after D'Amore left and asked the crowd if they wanted him fired.  The crowd screamed "NO!"  Young asked for the crowd to help him by being his "friends".  It was going to be their secret plan for Eric to not get fired.  The crowd chanted "Don't Fire Eric!"

Decent segment.

- A video announcing that October's TNA Bound for Glory pay-per-view would take place in Detroit, Michigan.  The announcers hyped the announcement and called it a big deal.  Tenay said people ask them all the time when TNA is going to take their PPVs out of Orlando.  It's about friggin' time.

Backstage, Jeremy Borash interviewed the X-Division Champion, Senshi.  The champ said he didn't care who his mystery opponent was; he was going to win no matter what.

4) X-Division Championship Match
Senshi (c) vs. Frankie Kazarian

Kazarian came out sporting shorter hair than the last time I'd seen him.  Wasn't he fired from WWE for refusing to cut his hair?  Now he's back in TNA a year later with short hair.  Ha!

The match was good, with Senshi hitting some stiff kicks, and both men exchanging innovative offensive maneuvers.  The finish came after Senshi drilled Kazarian with that amazing top-rope double footstomp that I love.

Winner and still X-Division Champion: Senshi

Jeremy Borash interviewed Larry Zybysko backstage about his upcoming hair-vs-hair match with Raven.  Referee Slick Johnson entered the interview area and informed Larry that he'd be the referee in his match.  Johnson let on that he was trying to butter up Cornette for the senior official job.

5) Raven vs. Larry Zybysko - Hair vs. Hair Match (loser gets his head shaved)

Slick Johnson "inadvertently" tripped Larry to start the match.  Larry was wearing some spandex bicycle shorts and amateur wrestling boots; Raven was shirtles ... unfortunately.  Larry was on offense early on, using his wrestling experience to keep Raven on the mat.  Raven eventually hit a DDT, but Slick Johnson was still down from a ref bump I must've missed.  A minute later, Raven hit the Even Flow DDT for the win.

Winner: Raven

Larry fled the ringside area before he could get his head shaved.  Security brought him back and Raven strapped him into the barber's chair they had set up.  Raven went to town on Larry's head with the electric shaver.  As usual with these things, the hair was very difficult to shave.  Raven shaved his head down the middle before going for Larry's chest hair.  Don West and Slick Johnson took turns trying to cut Z's hair.

That was a pretty anti-climactic ending to a feud that's been going on for eight years.

Backstage, Kevin Nash and the Paparazzi cut a fairly humorous promo.  I liked it.

6) Kevin Nash & Alex Shelley (w/ Johnny Devine) vs. Chris Sabin & Jay Lethal

The visual of the 7-foot-tall Nash and the 5-foot-nothing X-Divisioners was pretty funny.  This is one of the best angles in TNA right now.  I really like how they're currently booking the X-Division guys.  Senshi is doing his thing as the X-champ, AJ and Daniels are doing their thing in the tag division, and Lethal, Sabin, and Shelley are involved in this Nash/Paparazzi feud.  It's better than the random 15-man X-Division clusterfuck matches they were doing every week.

When Nash tagged in, he executed a quick armdrag on Lethal.  The crowd chanted "That was awesome!"  Big Sexy eventually settled into his mediocre-big-man power routine.  Nash and Shelley made a lot of quick tags and worked well together as a team.  Later in the match, Lethal made the hot tag to Sabin, who connected with an array of impressive high-risk maneuvers.  Sabin quickly rolled up Alex Shelley for the pin.  Chalk one up for the X-Division!

Winners: Chris Sabin & Jay Lethal

After the match, Sabin and Lethal attacked Nash, but Devine and Shelley saved his sorry ass.  Jerry Lynn ran down in his street clothes and chased the bad guys off.  He ripped off his employee badge, apparently signaling a return to active competition.

Team 3D was interviewed by Jeremy Borash backstage.  Brother Ray just kept repeating the word "violence".  Strange.

7) Team 3D vs. The James Gang & Abyss (w/ James Mitchell)

The match was pretty entertaining.  At one point, Abyss threw Brother Runt (Spike Dudley) into the crowd and they body-surfed him back toward the ringside area, where they proceeded to dump him on his head on the cold hard floor.  Things got sort of crazy after that.  All six men were battling around the arena using a variety of weapons and hitting a number of hardcore crowd-pleasing spots.  Brother Ray whipped out a staple gun and stapled a fan-made "ECW fears TNA" sign to Abyss' forehead.  Things only got worse from their.  More weapons were introduced, including the obligatory kendo sticks.

The finish came when Abyss drove Brother Runt through a table with the Blackhole Slam.

Winners: Abyss & The James Gang

That was actually an entertaining and fun hardcore brawl.  Adding Abyss to this match/feud was a brilliant move.

Backstage, JB interviewed AMW and Gail Kim.  Chris Harris yelled at James Storm for drinking too much.

8) NWA World Tag Team Championship Match
AJ Styles & Christoper Daniels (c) & Sirelda vs. America's Most Wanted & Gail Kim

The match was okay; nothing to write home about.  The wrestlers worked hard enough, it's just tough when you have back-to-back six-mans.  The finish came after an AMW mini-argument and an errant chair-shot led to AJ Styles rolling up James Storm for the win.

Winners and still World Tag Team Champions: AJ Styles & Christopher Daniels (and that big Amazon lady)

The announcers hyped the upcoming match.

Jeremy Borash interviewed Samoa Joe backstage.

9) The Road to Victory #1 Contender's Match
Sting vs. Christian Cage vs. Scott Steiner vs. Samoa Joe

All four participants were treated to big-match introductions, including "the walk" from backstage to the ring.

Samoa Joe and Christian went nose-to-nose early on, resulting in a flying kick from Joe that the cameras cut away from.  According to Don West it was breathtaking.  They never showed the replay.

During the match, a mysterious masked figure appeared from the crowd and sprayed gasoline in Sting's face.

It was...

Jeff Jarrett!

Yay.

Medics came out to tend to Sting.  Jarrett fled.  Joe and Christian battled until Scott Steiner entered the ring and tossed Cage to the floor.  Steiner followed Christian to the outside.  Samoa Joe recovered in the ring and hit a running suicide dive from the ring to the floor!  All three men were laid out.  A few moments later, Scott Steiner put Joe through a table hard with an elbow from the ring apron.  The battle raged on between the three while Sting was being tended to in the back.

Sting eventually returned with his left eye taped up and started cleaning house.  The crowd response was tepid at best.  Sting nailed Steiner with the "Scorpion Death Drop" while Joe and Christian were fighting on the outside.  The Stinger made the cover for the easy three.

Winner: Sting

After the match, Christian extended his hand to Sting.  Both men shared an awkward and uneasy moment as the pay-per-view went off the air.  They shook hands and all, but it was sketchy.

Sting will face Jeff Jarrett for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship at next month's Hard Justice pay-per-view.

------------------------------------

I thought it was kind of cheesy how Sting only wrestled half the match, but still got the win.  He can't go 20 minutes?  Why's he getting a title shot?

Aside from that one gripe, I thought the show was very good.  I like that TNA builds angles over long periods of time.  As crappy as the Larry Z/Raven match was, at least it was the blowoff to a year-long feud.  Sure, it didn't really make any money for the company, but it shows that TNA can have patience and allow time for a story to develop.

Slow and steady wins the race, right?  Well, TNA is slowly and steadily getting better each and every month.  They're not anywhere near WWE at this point, but if they keep slowly improving their game and solidifying their foundation, they will be.  It's just a matter of time.
