2nd Annual Pro Wrestling Guerrilla Bicentennial - Night 1
By ZAH This is my first time buying a PWG DVD so I'm hoping for good things... Match 1 Wow...what a great way to start off the show. Both of these guys are well-schooled and this match was just as good as most of what I saw on WWE or TNA programming this past week. I didn't see many missed spots at all and it was a back and forth match. Crowd seemed really hot which made it even better. The end came with Richards giving a BRUTAL Tiger Driver Piledriver to Ballard. Rating: 8/10
Match 2 This match wasn't nearly as good as the first one technically, but the individuals were more animated and had "bigger" personalities. This match was certainly more Lucha-style and at times the guys were looking like they were trying to remember which moveset was next. In other words, it didn't really flow at times. The valet/manager (Luscious) in the match is pretty hot...with the exception of her Tammy Faye Baker eyes. Great outfit and she did her job well by interfering in the match when the ref's back was turned. Nice. Hell, at one point she jumped in the ring and gave a spinning kick to one of the masked guys. Double nice. Color me impressed. The masked boys beat the unmasked boys with a roll-up. Rating: 5/10
Match 3 Y'know, if you're gonna call yourself Mr. Excitement you'd better be pretty exciting. This guy wasn't. Unlike the first match, which looked like it could have been on Smackdown or Impact...this match looked like an Indy show match. This match was pretty boring and I didn't really follow what happened. Just two indy guys getting some experience, I guess. No ! great wr estling or fantastic moves or even solid psychology. Chris Bosh & Scott Lost interferred on Ryan's behalf, allowing him to pick up the victory over Mr. E. Blah. Rating: 3.5/10
Have I mentioned at this point that there is zero commentary?? It doesn't hurt things as much as I thought it would...it's kinda like being there. However, it would've been nice to know who was who and what storylines were being followed.
Match 4 I am a big Petey fan...but he's just so bloody small I don't know if he'll ever be anything other than a great worker in a mid-card position. Of course, that's not such a bad thing, is it? Anyway, crowd was split on the wrestlers as duelling "Let's go Petey" "Let's go Ricky" chants broke out. The match was solid, highlighted early by an off-the-apron hurricarana onto the floor by Williams on Reyes. Wow. And let me say that any Canadian wrestler who slaps the Sharpshooter on somebody is gonna bring a smile to my face. Spinning sit-out powerbomb by Reyes brings a close 2-count. He tried it again but Williams reversed it into a DDT. The end to the match came when Reyes slapped a submission move on Williams out of nowhere and got the tap-out. Rating: 7/10
Match 5 This was my first time watching everybody but Steen & Generico, whom I had seen in an ROH video (Dragon Gate Invasion...buy it!!). Let me first say that there are some talented wrestlers/personalities in this match. Let me also say that some of these guys look no bigger than a pencil and need to eat a little bit. But I digress... Back to the match...the wrestling was quite good with few to no blown spots. Steen is a fantastic heel and I can see why he's the current PWG champion. Generico is ! great bu t it's hard to take a wrestling stick seriously...which can also be said for Tornado. I really see big things for Tornado, though. Great gimmick...tons of charisma...wrestling ability. He just needs to stop starving himself. Wasn't overly blown away by Disco and/or Escalibur. Super Dragon was very impressive...more for the way he carried himself in the ring than for his wrestling, which was also very good. Dragon just oozes "bad ass-ness". The match was highlighted by a double over-the-top-rope plancha by both Super Dragon & Human Tornado onto Disco & Escalibur, quickly followed by a plancha off the top turnbuckle by Generico onto Steen on the floor. Crowd popped big-time for that series of moves. At one point all six men were laid out in the ring and were subject to the dreaded 'referee ten count'. The end came when the three heels all triple-teamed Tornado, who could not overcome the odds and was pinned by Disco. Shortly thereafter, a horrific-looking sick piledriver put out Generico. That left Super Dragon all by himself. Not for long, though. He, too, was the victim of a triple team and the heels won the match. Rating: 7.5/10
Match 6 At this point in the dvd, it began to skip...badly. With two minutes left to go in the match, the skipping stops. With a hook of the tights (and a full-moon view of Sabin's ass), Daniels picks up the victory. Rating: WTF?
Match 7 Note to Bosh: Umm...you live in California. Why don't you have a tan?? Both the wrestlers and the crowd were really into this match. Lots of double-team moves by Sky & 'Silver. Again, I sometim! es find Lucha too "fake" looking (for lack of a better definition) simply because the wrestlers involved are trying too hard to make sure they get their moves performed in a particular order. Anyway, Bosh & Lost make for a good team and this ended up being a pretty good match. The "sick move of the match" was a top-rope to the floor sunset flip by Quicksilver onto Bosh that got the crowd to pop. That was followed by dual suicide planchas in which Quick completely botched the move and practically landed on his head. Ouch. By the end of the match the crowd was rabid and really wanting a title change. Just when it looked like Bosh/Lost were going to take it, Scorpio rolled-up Lost out of nowhere and won the match and the belts. After the match, the heels were joined by Joey Ryan and attacked Scorpio, busted him open, and unmasked him. The crowd stood in stunned silence as the heels admired their handiwork. Scorpio was devestated about being unmasked and didn't even care about the blood pouring down his face. Very good storyline delivery here. Rating:8/10
Match 8 So Cal Val was out to announce the special opponent for Styles. For the record, she could stay in the ring standing around for 2 hours and I'd probably still buy the DVD. Anyway, the mystery opponent was the would-be WWE superstar for a month, the ponytail sportin' "Future" himself, Frankie Kazarian!! The match was fun and, early on, Kazarian took a break to allow himself the chance to grab a bottle of water to drink and share with Styles. Awww...how nice. The match was very entertaining from beginning to end. Kazarian definitely knows how to showcase all of his skills when given the time...too bad he's at a PWG event and not on Smackdown. Oh well. Styles, as always, was awesome. The end came when both gentlemen were on the outside and on the verge of being c! ounted o ut. AJ got up to the apron at the count of 18, but then Kazarian leaped to the apron and suplexed Styles back to the floor...WOW!! This resulted in the match being a double count-out. Rating: 8/10
Final Thoughts For the price I paid at the PWG website, I'm very happy with this DVD (with the exception of the Daniels/Sabin match being lost due to the skipping). This was a very good show and I'm looking forward to watching Night 2 sometime (I've got it...just don't know if I've got the time to watch it anytime soon). Overall Rating: 7.5/10
